#GearsFacts with CliffyB

I didn't realize that Gears was such a personal project for Cliff. I've gotta say, reading this made me like him a lot more. I always kind of liked him based on videos I'd seen, but all this stuff is really cool.

Shame he hates us Gaffers though :(

Dude Huge is about as candid as they come in the video game industry, I definitely respect him for that. That was some pretty interesting stuff that I had no idea about.

This is great commentary. I wish Cliffy had gotten his wish about the size of the male characters...they're all so cartoonishly beefy.(to maintain that type of size you have to eat a ton and lift mountains of weights. It's a damn video game but it still bothers me ha) -snip-

Over the years we've all heard the jokes about how unrealistically huge the Gears dudes are... then the other day I saw one of the Gears ultimate BTS videos and saw that this guy

...has been the Epic Games lead art director for like 9 years. The first thing that came to mind was "...it all makes sense now". I have this image in my mind of them holding concept meetings to discuss how intimidating they want the characters / locust to be and no one says a word, but when they are done the other art guys just start making sketches based on him.

Wish we could have learned more about the PC chapter that was now added to the X1 version of the game. It feels like it was meant to be in the 360 version but was cut for some reason.

You roll from cover to cover like bionic commando...moves from platform to platform. how do you not get the reference? Have you played both original games?

I played bionic commando years ago and what i remembered most was swinging from side to side and climbing towers and don't remember rolling in to cover . Then again I have had a long life between my NES days and today and a little detail like rolling in to cover in bionic commando have been lost. Thanks for being condescending about it though when I was just asking a question.

You don't roll. It's the straight up and down platforming not the swinging. Gears didn't have omnidirectional originally. So it was roll up and down or left and right.

haha jeez. Rod's a big guy too. i know it's supposed to be like Predator or Commando, but anytime Gears of War tries to be serious it comes off as hilarious. I love the gameplay, but the story is absofuckinglutley ridiculously stupid. WE STILL DON'T KNOW JACK SHEYIT ABOUT THE LOCUST HORDE!

No wonder Delta Squad is the only effective unit on Sera, they eat all the damn food!

The books went into detail that a lot of people that were civilians were barely fed so that all the soldiers could eat all they needed. But the games don't touch on it. Plus I though Cole story of writing to his dead mom was pretty sad shit. Also dom and fenix story and how dom's bro died in pendulum wars.

Was that even worth playing?

Gears is one of the first mainstream games with something to say.

I understood that reference.

Yeah the Predator influences are obvious in the soundtrack, scenarios, and most definitely in the character design.

Everyone bags on the character size but it always made sense to me in that context. It probably helps that I think Predator is the best damn action movie ever made.

Cliffy is such a smart dude. I know it's cool to hate on the dude but he really is super good at his thing. I really recommend his Irrational Interviews episode, dude really impressed me there.

I wonder how people would react to knowing that Call of Duty 4 was basically about how fucked up the Iraq war was.

What's wrong with the beefy characters? It's a game and their meant to be bad arse!

You want realism in a game like this?

Cliffy is alright, GAF calling him arrogant is a laugh.

I believe it always was planned for 360 but was cut due to time, I do remember reading something about it a long time back.

It's also kind of obvious when you look at the game the first two chapters all have 6 parts and are well spread out, then the final 3 chapters all have cut back parts and the final chapter only has 3 segments all based on the train that was suddenly introduced without warning in the story.

That last bullet having more stopping power is kinda awesome. Thanks for the share!

Don't really think this is a new mechanic -- I believe Halo 1 or 2 was the first game to do this with the Sniper Rifle.

Many games often do this now, even though it's not ever stated outright. Halo's designers definitely popularised it at the GDC where they spoke about their design principles.

The idea to do cover came from @MrLeePerry showing me Killswitch one day I was like WANT.
I told everyone.

sweet vindication

In SP the last bullet in each magazine is 25% stronger so the chances of "oh shit" fighting a bad guy are high in the game.
Brilliant piece of game design right there.

Where's the picture of the laser gun?

Also, Lester Speight, what a legend. I saw those ads them saw Cole, I just knew it bad to be part of it.

the first early shots of gears 1 all have some unique and unused design to them all, I like that kind of stuff as it shows change and gives you some things to think about, that laser gun has been something I always thought was an early lancer using a more unreal tournament weapon design then the final design gears went with.

There's also some early shots of that early bald marcus, dom and some cog soldiers which looks quite different too.

I really enjoyed reading this. It's interesting to learn how Gears was influenced by Cliff's personal circumstances. The first game is one of the best games I've played.
