Generally accepted things in gaming that baffle you

Why do 90% of all JRPGs have only one battle theme? You spend most of the game battling.

Strong punches on trigger buttons?

what's the deal with space sims? you're not simulating anything. it doesn't exist!

I find it strange that most people seem to prefer a first-person view as opposed to a third-person view. I find it generally more engaging to see the character I'm supposed to be playing rather than being forced into a narrow tunnel view where I can't see anything that's right next to me.

This. I can't play FPS' for this reason. I know it's silly and probably stupid, but I feel so awkwardly restricted when playing these kinds of games.

Non customizable controls.

What kind of fuckheads work there and decide I can't configure the controls like I want to?

Feature that is implemented in like 25 minutes of work? Lazy fucks.

This pisses me off no end.

Grind.

I am not sure how some simply accept it as if it were an intrinsic part of the RPG.
Wait, are you another Jerk or are you Jerk 2.0 with a different avatar and downgraded username?

That building worlds and putting explosive barrels dotted around is a safe thing to do.

That so many video game worlds are filled with various characters that love to steal things. Seriously, all these fancy doors and there are always some kleptomaniacs stealing my keys.

Gonna have to echo the post about customizable controls. There is no reason not to have this in every game as there hasn't been a single genre where customizable controls wasn't an option.

Non-custom controls
No quick save
Peripheral lock. Fuck you MS, I want to use a pad with a decent d-pad and it be wireless.

tons of screen text that you can't skip, and you must get through all 20 minutes of it before you even get a chance to play the game... eg okami

Regenerating health

This feature makes the game more fun since people don't have to die and then reload the game over and over. It decreases frustration and increases fun. That's the idea of playing videogames, to have fun.

If the levels aren't hard enough for you, increase the difficulty.

I completely understand why you may be against it, but this is just intended to explain why so it doesn't "baffle" you anymore. Not saying you have to like it.

strong punch/kick make sense on triggers/shoulder buttons, since they are the slower moves. having a quick/weak punch on a shoulder, you wouldn't be able to jab quite as fast

Death mechanic in a story driven game. That's not to say that there shouldn't be a fail state just that dying completely derails a narrative.

It baffles me that there are people out there who aren't bothered by or can't see screen tearing.

I didn't really notice it until it was pointed out. I suspect many others are like that too. Although aliasing has always stuck out like a sore thumb for me.

* Saving a game, then quitting only to see the warning message "All unsaved progress will be deleted!!!!!". What the hell? It always makes my heart skip a beat and wonder if I'm about to lose all my stuff. I just saved, or how about you save my progress yourself? I like how Borderlands does it - when you quit it says "All your progress will be saved". Thank you Gearbox.

* Games that autosave with checkpoints, but still require you to save the game when you quit or lose all progress. Halo, I'm looking at you.

* Dying and then reloading. Feels archaic in 2011.

* Asking us to press START from the game menu, when you can usually hit any button to proceed.

* Games that confirm confirmations. Lookin at you GT5.

* Load screens that are nothing but a blank screen or little spinning load icon. There are way too many games guilty of this. If I have to wait, at least show me something interesting or let me interact with something. Bayonetta nailed this.

* Games that let you do batshit stupid shit your character would never, ever do. Like walk directly off of a cliff, or jump backwards onto spikes rather than over there to that handhold. At least have the character in game try to stop you at first, or say "Nuh uh", or even look directly at the screen and ask you "What the fuck are you doing?"

:)

i've never understood what's so immersive about walking around while looking through a view slot cut in a cardboard box that's over your head. unless, maybe, your character's a robot...

HUD in games that aren't:

1) Flight sims

2) Your are the Terminator

How can devs not see how they ruin immersion with this ridiculous convention from 1980's arcades?

Core gamers. Those, and loading times: I'd trade graphical prowess for short loading times any day, but apparently most people are fine with them.
