Yeah it kind of reminds me of that BOYCOTT BLACK OPS group on Steam where if you went into the group page you could see 90% of the members were CURRENTLY PLAYING: BLACK OPS.

haha that was awesome and depressing at the same time.

Thing is, I have zero issue with digital correction of botched shots - wire removal, force-kick correction, audio cleanup etc. As you can guarantee they would have done that at the time were the technology there.

ILM painstakingly swapped the Imperial Officer's badge around in that one shot where it was on the wrong side of his uniform. I can appreciate those changes.

But going beyond that and you move into dangerous territory. You have to let both versions be available, even if the new version is undeniably better. I've mentioned it before, but Blade Runner is a great example of this. You can buy a boxset with five different versions of that film, from original theatrical release, the alleged (Scott didn't have a thing to do with it) Director's Cut, the new and undoubtedly best Final Cut and even the workprint, which was the 'in the process of being edited' version meant only for internal viewing but due to its place in history (it was leaked at a film festival) should be included for posterity's sake.

I don't think it's difficult to say "this is what I wanted to do all along, but here is how it was released originally also". It's Lucas' insistence on going "new version is ONLY version!" that infuriates us all.

The Star Trek TOS remasters are a perfect example of how to do it right. Thoughtfully, respectfully, and carefully. Lucas is clearly incapable of respecting his own films.

I wonder what's stopping Lucas from taking advantage of seamless branching. I guess it's also problem that he has altered the movies 500 different fucking times. What versions could be hypothetically included in a universe where Lucas isn't a complete assmuncher?

Happened with L4D2 as well. Yeah, I'll be buying these, but that price tag includes the right to call George Lucas an aging meddler anytime I wish. And I wish to do so now.

Tangent: An artist shouldn't have the right to retcon their own work. Art should be considered finished when it is released. I can't think of one song, book, movie or painting that was ever improved by the creator going back and changing something years later. Of course, I can't think of many instances where the artist became such an AGING MEDDLER!

This pretty much sums it up. If the originals were made available (in an equal quality release), people would still be making fun of these new changes/additions, but wouldn't necessarily be angry about it. Just let people choose.

I'm in this camp as well.

I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan, and while I think Lucas has made some silly changes to the series over the years, they aren't worth getting upset over. The Greedo shoots first one is obviously the dumbest, but if the inclusion of these "no's" is true, they do sound kind of awful.

I just find it odd that he spends a lot of time removing matte composition lines and fixing lightsaber effects - clear improvements to make the effects more seamless - then throws a bucket full of CG at the screen that doesn't blend at all and just sticks out.

That new R2 scene with the extra rocks is cracking me up. I can imagine Lucas sitting there, repeating the same thoughts over and over until they've reinforced the alternate history that exists only in his head:

"There weren't enough rocks back then for me to make that scene the way I wanted, but now I can correct that and continue to realise my original vision, thanks to modern technology! Yes, that's how it happened! Greedo did shoot first!"

Not for me. I've been following the thread a bit, but I don't actively care enough any longer about Star Wars to still go out and purchase the sets. I'm displeased because when I have kids I'm going to have to resort to pulling out VHS or some other backwards form of media. My kid is going to look at me like I'm such a fuck up thanks to George.

"VHS, Dad? What the fuck"

Now, more doohickeys come out of R2 when he's shot (now with tea kettle effect):

That wasn't a problem for you? When I was 11 years old and I first saw that scene I was like "Why isn't more pointless shit coming out or R2???" Now the story makes much more sense.

Jesus Christ. I really wish I had kept my VHS copies. Maybe I should start looking for Laserdiscs.

Edit: Never heard of the see-through Han thing. I'm going to check that out right now ....

In the next Star Wars release, all the male characters will now be sporting mustaches.

Why? Just because.
The characters who had no moustaches will get new CG enhanced mustaches with fur shading, and characters who them will have them digitally removed... Y? JUS BECUZ!!!

No full list yet but Vader's Noo is certainly the most offensive thing. It went from Vader silently debating his loyalties and finally turning on the Emperor as the music did its thing to Vader suddenly going Noo. *Picks up Emperor* Nooooooooooooooooooo
I don't know. this change just didn't bother me. Obi-Wan's scream though sounded horrible.

EDIT: I'm reading a rumor they removed some of luke's dialogue during this scene also. I'm starting to hate the "NOOOOOOOOOO" add now.

I was really really really looking forward to getting the six movie set but I may not now.

I still love how han's head jerks to the right but if it didn't, uh, jerk, greedo would've missed anyway with the edit.

Poor John Ratzenberger :(

Man, I saw some clips now of the release in HD people have put up after the leak. Fucking hell there is some BAD green screen green hue showing up in places. I never noticed it before but it's sure noticeable now. It may have been I never noticed it because the picture was never as clean but if they can add these awful changes they can fucking fix that. I'm definitely not buying this. I wouldn't waste my time even downloading this rubbish. What a shitty ass version. I'll keep my dvd versions, I'll put it whatever flaws that has and wait until Lucas dies and they release the original versions on blu-ray(or whatevers next) or something.

That little dodge always look weird to me, and the step on Jabba's tails looks even weirder
Always had a big problem with the tail step, Han knows Jabba is a bad ass mofo', yet when he's blagging for a little more time he decides to hurt and embarrass Jabba?

New Han Solo carbonite unfreezing scene:

You know, now I'm scratching my head at all these trivial changes. I was hoping for more broad, sweeping changes to better bridge the OT and PT, like more scenes on Coruscant, having Jimmy Smits as old Bail Organa, adding the Imperial March to ANH or altering the Obi-Wan / Vader duel to make it more fast paced.

Jesus, you want stuff like this?! SMH.

I still don't quite understand why that Greedo scene pisses off people so much.

It pussifies Solo. Probably Lucas' attempt to retcon him into the nerfed ROTJ Solo.

AbsoluteZero said:

Two main reasons:

1. It cheapens Han's character arc. Originally, he went from cold-hearted pirate to respected leader. Now, he was never so bad after all, it was all in self defense.

2. A BOUNTY HUNTER misses across a TABLE.

I will not buy this blu ray. I don't need it. If I want the films in HD with color correction, I have HDTV rips. But really, I want the original versions unaltered...

I sincerely hope no one on GAF buys this. If you must, wait until the price goes down or buy it used. But really, you just shouldn't buy it. Ever.
