Tor has legitimate uses. Victims of domestic violence can use it to communicate with social workers without their abuser finding out. Activists in oppressive governments can communicate with journalists without worrying about retaliation. Newspapers and the like use it to communicate with whisteblowers. The argument goes that criminals already have plenty of alternatives to using Tor, whereas your averaged battered wife does not. And of course, the government uses it too (iirc the Navy created it in the first place) and obviously has an interest in keeping it running.

Anyways, Tor isn't a thing. It is a distributed network. There is no "Tor building", or "Tor company", or "Tor server". Tor is an open source software that everyone can see, everyone can edit, everyone can download for free. Tor nodes are run by hobbyists and activists all around the world. You can't shut down tor any more than you can shut down torrents or HAM radio.

The child porn team in my unit fields some of the most dedicated, earnest and honorable people in the entire force. They are exemplars doing some of the most heinous investigative work imaginable and are treated with the utmost respect for what they put themselves through mentally and professionally. Their screening rooms are completely sealed off within the precinct and the evidence they process is treated like the psychological toxic waste it is, with only a very select few able and willing to access, identify, catalogue and edit it for usable intelligence.

I cannot even begin to fathom the depth of ignorance that this post requires.

EDIT: this clip features interviews with analysts from the Dutch CP unit talking about investigating a serial abuser who was torturing kids in Manila. , At 00:27 the investigator chokes up when he says 'the images are bad but the sounds really cuts to the bone.' Never been soft, just the government and local organisations pushing therapy and clinical treatment concerning it more than other countries.

It's important more countries and people start talking about this, because pedophiles get these tendencies during puberty and the goal of clinical treatment/therapy is to prevent pedophiles from acting on their urges and harming a child (whether themselves molesting or indirectly by consuming child pornography).

No one wants to talk about it and it's not solving anything, there are people that have never harmed a child but have these thoughts, due to the stigma they are too afraid to seek help and can lead to harm later on.

There needs to be more study concerning therapy/clinical treatment and raising awareness in this regard so that abuse can be prevented.

In Germany one such effort is called Prevention Project Dunkelfeld which is about clinical treatment and therapy and it's very successful in terms of how many people seek out their help and the positive effect it has on these people.

It's like when a torrent site is shutdown a new one pops-up and the userbase migrates to it. Eventually as more sources are shutdown the bases merge, along with the natural growth in people over time. It's really not surprising it got 90k members in 6 months.

Sort of. Tor also routes your traffic through a bunch of other users spread throughout the world and (I think) your data is in an encrypted form while in transit which both serve to make tracking more difficult.

One of the issues with that iirc is that your traffic has to stop bouncing around and exit somewhere, so everything ends up going through 'exit nodes' which then have logs of said traffic prior to encryption. The thought was that exit nodes were to be so plentiful being set up by fellow users that no one entity could log enough of the traffic being bounced around to tie anything to specific individuals, at least not through IP.

I believe the script kiddie group Lizardsquad threatened that idea by claiming that they had control of a few thousand nodes that they had set up. Yeah, it's a few years old but here: Business Insider Dec 26, 2014

There are 7+ billion people in the world. A small fraction of that figure will still be a huge amount for one person to consider. Pedophilia isn't really a fringe thing compared to other crimes, as far back as human history goes, there have been adults preying on children.

Children are the most vulnerable and the least able to defend themselves or even know when something is wrong. Predators take advantage of that, especially when those children are at-risk or forgotten in the first place. 87,000 is a tiny number, which should scare the shit out of people.
