Get a Switch for BotW or PS4 for Horizon + P5

I think I might go with PS4 + Horizon + 12 year sub to PS+ and drop P5... that way he can try other games too?

I think that would be a good call, plus he also gets a steady stream of PS Plus games every month, and if he's never owned a PS system other than PSOne, pretty much every single game will be new to him.

PS4 has 3 years of games made by first and 3rd parties. There is tons of great games on it, even if it's multiplatform. Just because a game is old or multiplatform, doesn't mean it doesn't count.

12 year PS+ sub? Like, subscribing to PS+ for 12 years? There is deal like that?
For certain people, Persona 5 will absolutely be the better game. It looks awesome.
As a person who cares for storyline in games Persona is better game for my tastes. The only genre where I don't care for story is platformer, knock it out of the park Mario Odyssey.

He has a gaming laptop.
I myself in that situation would prefer a Switch for the long run.

Better multiplatform on the PC and the Nintendo exclusives.

It all depends on taste.

Not that easy, what are the specs of the laptop? There are still a lot of great games on PS4 that are not on PC.

I'd be a sad puppy if my only system was a Switch. Just not enough content to keep anyone occupied.

There's a bunch of exclusive ps4 games that i like.
Not the cinematic naughty dog stuff,
but more like blooborne, last guardian and gravity rush.

By the end of the year, Switch will have a bunch of exclusives I want too though... Really, in the perfect world, have both, but a gaming PC above all IMO.

Looking at this thread it seems that for a lot of people MC scores >>>>> personal taste and opinions

Guys can I like a 85 game better than a 95? Can I have your permission to go against the all mighty meta score?

What? Get out of there with sensible logic man.

I am, more so talking about you saying better performance on a laptop.....that depends on the laptop, a good laptop that plays games is not cheap.

Without specs we won't know.
Still, with the amount of games on a gaming PC, it's still the most valuable gaming device IMO.

Also, as long as a game has good framerate, i don't care how it looks.
Though to some, that's very important.

PS4 has an excellent library of games so this should be a no brainier.

Despite BoTW being the only must play game so far this generation, PS4 has many excellent exclusives.

PC + Nintendo is always a fantastic combination however. May be worth holding off til e3 to see what's in the switch pipeline.

Right? It's ridiculous. After playing and completing both Horizon and Zelda if someone were to ask me what game I would buy a system for it would be Horizon. Now I know that's going against the grain for some people, and going against metacritic scores, but in the end that's all this is, opinions.

And in my opinion OP you should get him a PS4, not only does it have my favorite game of this generation in Horizon, there are more options available to him when it comes to software.

PC+Switch is a better combo than PC+PS4. A lot of overlap in the latter. Definitely get him the switch seeing how it's the new hotness.
At this moment in time, unless you are a massive Zelda fan, well, no, quite frankly.
The Switch library is extremely bare bone for now (for good reason) vs a PS4 which is hitting full stride on exclusives and big 3rd party titles you might want to experience on TV (vs on laptop).

PC / PS4 gives you access to a huge amount of games, and you can also probably find a very good deal on PS4 too.

Now down the line when more titles are available? Sure. I'd go PC/ PS4/ Switch then, maybe.

Edit: looks like he's going PS4/ HZD/ P5 anyway.
Probably a good call as of now.

Yep. I have a gaming PC but I've been playing PS4 way more lately. I have stuff I could play on PC but the console games are just more urgent for me.

Name 5 great games (that you know of) on Switch(or even better, coming to Switch) that are not on another console or PC and I might consider this statement to be true.

I'm including upcoming games of course. Nothing like Mario Kart or Arms or Mario Odyssey on PC or PS4. Unique game experiences he could only play on switch. Switch is the perfect secondary platform. Add in portability and it's a no brainer, considering he already has a gaming PC.

Nothing like Gravity Rush, Until Dawn, Persona, Last Guardian, Dreams, God of War. etc... on switch, unique experiences you cannot play anywhere else. It is not a no brainer..at all. Lets not act like Nintendo is the only platform with unique games please.

Having finished Horizon on PS4 Pro, and now playing Zelda on Switch, as of now I would recommend Switch and BOTW because the portability factor of the Switch makes the experience so much better. I no longer have to play on the couch, I can move about the house, set up the kick stand anywhere, like it's just so much more relaxing to take it with you that it's making Zelda feel much more memorable than playing on my couch on my tv with ps4 pro.

Game-wise, horizon was awesome and Zelda BOTW so far is good (despite weapon deterioration). You'll enjoy both. If you're looking for other games, the PS4 has amazing variety of quality games. If you're looking for a new experience, Switch is the way to go.

Just Barrow a dusty Wii u to play Zelda. No one should buy a console for one game, especially a Nintendo one.

This thread is just turning into a list war for some of you...and only one console even has a list lol. People are allowed to like and recommend a Switch if they want. I'll be on Switch/PC by the end of the year. I figured that with Xbox Play Anywhere and with PSNow adding PS4 games, it'll only be a matter of time before I get to play Horizon and some of their other exclusives anyway. I have enough in my backlog just for Nintendo systems that I'll be okay with waiting.

That said, without knowing the laptop specs it's impossible to make a recommendation based on the presence of competent hardware for today's games. I think OP made the right choice. Horizon and PS+, and if OP can find a good deal then grab the Witcher 3 GOTY too. Two big RPGs that will last well into the summer.

I don't think you read everything i wrote there.

You even listed some games i listed...

You can play rpgs and action games on PC. Where else can you find a game like Mario Kart? I'm not trying to say switch has a better library of games. However, it will have more unique experiences. Not to mention Nintendo first party is far stronger than Sony first party.

I think the PS4 is just a much, much better option. Unless, that is, he is constantly on a bus, or has huge layovers (and doesn't mind playing portable games in public); then the Switch starts to make a little more sense.

You can't just say people can play other games that are similar to X game, then say you can't play a game like Mario Kart anywhere else. That is just asinine.

Kart racers

Zelda BOTW
Mario Odyssey
Splatoon 2
Xenoblade 2
Pokemon
Fire Emblem

There are lots of noteworthy Nintendo Franchises that will likely make it over the life of the system. That's not to say the PS4 is without very attractive exclusives, there's just a lot more overlap with the PC. The problem is that value is very subjective, and we know nothing about the gaming preferences of the person the OP would be buying for. The answer lies there.

Not released, and may not be for a long time for some of the ones you mention (you even include a merely rumored Pokemon).

Nintendo first party support is always fantastic. People forgetting it was only recently the PS4 exclusive offerings surpassed the WII U, which was largely due to a shift in focus to the Switch.

Zelda > Horizon.

Buying a Switch even if it's just for Zelda is totally worth it. I'm not hating on Horizon because I really enjoyed it but it doesn't come close to Zelda and there is no way I'd ever buy a PS4 just to play it.

Just different tastes there, so he'd really have to ask them. I just played through both and liked Horizon a lot more. Zelda is very good, but I'm more about more realistic art styles, more linear story paths, and robust story telling in games than sandbox and make your own adventure stuff. I'm just not an imaginative person and games are more consuming interactive stories/experiences to me than playing in a virtual world.

Well, he had a Ps1 and is a pc gamer.

Maybe he doesn't care for Nintendo or Zelda at all? Otherwise he would've owned a Wii, at the very least...

Also important to ask. Some people just don't like Nintendo's style of games. They are very different than the popular genres, art styles etc. on the other consoles and PC (the big multiplats anyway).

For some that makes it a great complementary console. For others it just makes them irrelevant as their tastes don't fit what Nintendo does.

Yep. I have a gaming PC but I've been playing PS4 way more lately. I have stuff I could play on PC but the console games are just more urgent for me.

Same. My PS4 generally gets more use than my PC and Switch/Wii U. Sony exclusives are just some of the cream of the crop of narrative drive experience type games that are my main bread and butter.

PC I thought I'd use more, but I'm not sure I'll bother keeping it upgraded as I just haven't shifted much gaming over there. My friends I game with are on PS4, I prefer buying physical so I can sell after beating etc. My PC is now mostly just for the few MS exclusives I want (no need for an Xbox anymore) and cheap older games/indie games.

If you're getting him a PS4 for open world type RPGs why are you also getting him Persona 5? Edit: Saw he has a gaming PC.. but there has to be something else he likes. Persona 5 is totally different from that type of game.

I want to get my cousin a nice present for getting his first job... he only has a gaming laptop says he likes open world RPG type games and I want to spend around $350

So is a $300 Switch and BotW better than a cheaper $250 PS4 with 2 games (Persona 5 and Horizon)?

21 years old, not a huge console gamer and last had a PS1 as a kid I believe.

Sounds like he wouldn't like p5 judging from the ps1 as a kid and open world rpg bit. High school dating sims really aren't for everyone.

He might dig the new Zelda but the switch isn't worth it yet. Go ps4

What a ridiculous post, for one, half those games are not RPG or action games, nor does a game being in a certain genre mean it is not unique. Show me a game like TLG, Dreams on another platform? Mario Kart is a racing game, I can play those on any other platform, by your logic.

Aahaha, never change, GAF. What a ludicrous post.

But for fun...

There you go. A kart game. On mobile. Poppy Kart.

Thats because PS4 and PC actually get great third party support.

Yeah, I was going to say that there's no overlap because most third parties don't make Switch games. This is a Trump level of twisting the truth to suit your own argument going on here.
