Hori Screen Protector. I forget its even on.
I have the PS VITA Face Cover. Perfect for back pocket and gym bag.

I bought the grips, they seem great but for travel they are horrible which is why I traded them for the face cover.

Yep. Not as bulky as it looks...
... and still fits on the original case I got when I had mine without it.

I definitely recommend the Hori hard pouch style case and they make really good screen protectors as well

This pouch works wonderfully for me.
I don't think that having an always-on case is worth the added bulk for a minuscule chance of higher durability during a fall. The Vita is substantial enough that the thickness of a snap on case on the unit sufficient to protect the Vita from a decent impact would seriously bulk the unit up Nd make it much less enjoyable to use. I've never been a fan of screen protectors either.
This pouch will certainly protect your Vita during travel as well as carry along everything else you will need.

I didn't like the Official Playstation Vita Case when I got it. Traded it back in toward a bigger memory card.
I got one of these for a trip recently and it did the job, but I normally just let it sit out at home:
