Detroit Metal City

My tastes tend to run toward something different, something new, so any of the above should fit the bill for you.

This is a good list except for Eden of the East which focused far too much on naked men and lame penis jokes.

Also Legend of Galactic Heroes is awesome.

I haven't really watched that much anime, but from what I HAVE, I can recommend the following:

Code Geass - Hangyaku no Lelouch
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
Clannad
Clannad ~After Story~
Welcome to the NHK
Fullmetal Alchemist
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai

Movies:
Howl's Moving Castle
5 Centimeters Per Second
Tekkon Kinkreet

claymore a show about a bunch of girls that get forced in to merging with demons and become half human half demon slayers with hilarious results.

Anyone know some series similar to Stellvia of the Universe?
I know it gets some hate and is full of clichés but I'm a space nerd and I loved that show when it aired a few years ago.

Seto no Hanayome

Nagasumi visits his grandmother near the sea during the summer. While visiting, he goes for a swim, and drowns right after entering the water. Fortunately for him he is saved by a young mermaid. Later as he tells the story to his family, a young girl named San appears at his home and begs Nagasumi to marry her.

She’s followed by two large thugs and they take both him and his parents to San's home under the sea. If that wasn’t strange enough, it turns out San's parents are mob bosses. Nagasumi is left with the choice of either death or marrying San. He chooses to marry a mermaid.

This would likely be that, except San's father and some members of the mob are not exactly thrilled to have Nagasumi courting San and are determined to bring an end to their relationship - or him. And there is also the matter of keeping it a secret that San is a mermaid.

Eden of the East had it's flaws, but that is not even a remotely accurate way to describe Eden of the East.

I can understand not liking EotE, but that's an ridiculously stupid and silly way of trying to mislead people as to what that series is about. You make it sound as though it's some kind of ecchi comedy series, when it's nothing even like that.

:( I was going to suggest Claymore, but since it wasn't your thing...
Fullmetal Alchemist
Death Note (First half of the series only. Seriously, the second half is throw away, but the first half is so good its worth it.)

or this:

Wait... why? You were doing so well without it.

Truth :lol

You haven't seen two of the greatest anime ever made legend of galactic heroes & crest of the stars. So i'd highly recommend those for a start, you'll probably enjoy them for sure, based on the good stuff you already like.
You also haven't seen the best ghibli films like nausicaa, only yesterday & princess mononoke.

General recommendations
12 Kingdoms
Black lagoon
Seirei no moribito
SDF macross. (by the creator of escaflowne)
Eureka seven
Tenga toppa gurren lagann
Turn A Gundam
Mushishi
Planetes
Ghost in the shell stand alone complex

For movies
Perfect blue
The Girl who leapt through time
The Place promised in our early days
Voice of a distant star
Vampire hunter D : Bloodlust
Jin-roh
Ghost in the shell

Eden of the East had far more nudity than any ecchi comedy series and the johnny = penis stuff was overused.

It had so much potential but instead it was wasted on flying angel women cutting off penises and yaoi fanservice.

But I guess I should wait for the movies to see if they can redeem the series.

Gunbuster + Diebuster
Monster
Kino's Journey
Legend of the Galactic Heroes
Mononoke
Kaiba
Denno Coil
Planetes
Ghost in the Shell SAC, 2nd GIG and movies

i watched ninja scroll over the weekend on netflix instant. i haven't watched it in years. in fact, i think it was the first time i've ever seen it in widescreen. thats just a classic, man. i even love the dub.

...actually, maybe my manga dvd is widescreen now that i think about it, i cant remember...

i'm about to watch mindgame. i keep forgetting to put it on.

i started to watch something from gainax about devils that kill other devils or something and thought it to be your garden variety anime fare. ended up deleting it.

i'm struggling to watch these dragonball kai movies cause i like to stream the movies thru ps3 media server but the mkv's have .ass subtitles and ps3 media server isnt rendering them.

gurren lagaan was the last great anime series i've seen. before that i really enjoyed: paranoia agent, SAC, flcl, samurai champloo, samurai 7...maybe one or two more. i loved tekkon kinkreet as far as movies go, and rebuild of evangellion in high def makes a grown man wanna cry.

oh and i watched aachi and ssipak from GAF recommendations...wow...that's not something you watch, that's something you experience.

Is this really that good? Because that art is awesome.

Only the first two episodes are pretty good the rest not so much. It's also somewhat a rip off of this this series:

Which is much better.

You... you really can't tell the difference between dick jokes and yaoi fanservice?

Just watched Akira the first time for today. Loved it, so I'd definitely recommend it.

Gave me a feeling of Evangelion and FLCL a bit. Just with the way the world starts to crumble apart.

Zeta Gundam

A strong, character-driven animé with sober themes and a compelling story. As good as it gets.

You can get the most out of it by watching the Gundam movie trilogy before this series, which is its direct sequel.

Would also recommend Outlaw Star if you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop.

Kino's Journey

Completely amazing and the only other anime series I've seen that comes close to FLCL and Cowboy Bebop. The most similar thing to it I can think of is the Professor Layton DS game. I wouldn't be surprised if the makers of that game were inspired by Kino's Journey.

i stopped watching the series after my favorite character on that show took a long vacation.
So did I, but then I decided to finish the series and it was awesome. You don't know what you're missing out on.

There are a lot of intriguing suggestions in this thread.

To start, I'm going to go with Black Lagoon, and then likely move to Mushishi (watched parts of an ep, and the animation is fantastic, with the story seeming right up my alley), and either Outlaw Star (I remember starting this years ago and never finishing) or Kino's Journey. (recommended to me a couple of years ago after I finished Haibane Renmei.

Black Lagoon time...

How exactly? How are you helping? By letting everyone know you didn't like Ergo Proxy? Fuck you.
Jesus Christ, dude, the man has a different opinion than you, that's all. He didn't kill your mother.

I really would like to see 5 Centimeters per second, but I can't find it for a reasonable price online, I think it was 50 used last time I looked - any ideas?

I'll second this. I'll second Noein and Samurai Champloo as well.

I'll put in my votes for:

Yakitate! Japan (love, love, love)
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop (my first)
FLCL
Mushi Shi (currently loving on this after taking a long break from anime)

I only now remember why I stopped watching anime: I got into bleach. After, what, 100+ episodes I stepped back and was like... no, fuck this, no more.

Too bad, really left a bad taste in my mouth. Fortunately Mushi Shi is nursing me back to health.

I watched 5 Centimeters per second and I did not like it, art is absolutely astonishing but whole thing is like a music video, three or four music videos combined together....

Yeah, once anime gets over 100 episodes and basically gets nowhere in the story I'm done with it.

I'll also put up Bakemonogatari, it's new but you can find the first few episodes online. Hellsing too, they are releasing err rereleasing it.

I'd also recommend this series since nobody did it:
Fantastic Children
1242387127594.jpg

It's really not what one would expect from a first look. Down to earth and a bit slow in the beginning but very emotional and thrilling as a whole.

Just watched the first twelve episodes of Black Lagoon. It's pretty fun stuff, with some existential philosophy thrown in from time to time. The storylines can get to be a little confusing at times, but the series' focus on character relationships, and on their own internal struggles, particularly that of Rock and Revy, have kept me interested. Looking forward to seeing how the remaining twelve episodes pan out.

Roberta was amazing!

Wow I was about to make this thread. After watching Valkyria Chronicles I realized how much I missed anime. Been watching One Piece, which isn't bad at all so far.

I stopped watching Bleach and Naruto a while back, though Naruto not so long ago. Have they improved any?

Yeah you guys have covered most of the bases. However I'd humbly like to submit Toradora into the mix too. Good humor mixed in with solid, believable plot progression all in a single season!? Heresy!

I agree with the Black Lagoon suggestions as well as GTO.

the upcoming hansel and gretel arc is one of my favourite subplots in an action anime, ever. it played out perfectly. [looking past the fighting super lolis premise anyway]
