Getting back into Pokemon - X/Y or Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby

Ok so with the virtual console and the Sun/Moon announcement I started playing the old Yellow version and it's as addicting as I remember it.

I wanted to get back into one of the newer games, I played some X until I got to the deer Pokemon and then quit and sold the game. Never player Ruby/Sapphire.

Which of the two in the title is a better game to get, especially with the ability to transfer Pokemon from them to the upcoming games.

ORAS. Unlike XY it is a remake of a Pokemon game before they started making everything straightforward. ORAS still feels like an older Pokemon game, but at least it's not XY with its garbage center city and linear circle of a map.

Seriously. I started with Y and AS and I'm on the verge of buying X and OR to complete my Pokedex.

Probably ORAS. It's the most recent so it has the most improvements (dexnav makes catching pokemon much more interesting). And the world and story is a little more interesting than X and Y.

I got Pokemon Y way back when Nintendo was running the promo where you got a copy free for buying certain games.

It's been something like a decade since I properly played a Pokemon game and I'm just so rusty and there's so many new Pokemon I don't the types of that I'm just gettting steamrolled after only the second gym.

Shit sucks. :(

You already played most of X anyway.

Might as well get ORAS- I find it to be the way better one anyway. Simple story that doesn't jump the shark, cooler/funnier characters.
It's also aesthetically more simplistic too, so that's a matter of preference, as X/Y integrates things like Pokemon centers and shops within the individual town's design while ORAS has shops and centers looking like the older series games. The game still looks really nice though, beautiful colors.

Same here, though it was thanks to the mythical Pokemon events and getting a n3DS!

Finally got a Hydreigon!!!

but seriously, no Pokemon should be evolving at fucking lvl 64!!!

I was leaning towards OR but everyone here is talking up AS so maybe I'll go that way. Which one has the better legendary?

Can I catch older legendary Pokemon in that game?

And I can transfer my ORAS Pokemon into sun/moon right?

In terms of raw power, Primal Groudon is a beast, whereas Primal Kyogre merely wins out on aesthetics. But you've got an unstoppable powerhouse on your team regardless of which you pick.

A decent selection of older Pokemon are in ORAS's Pokedex from the beginning, and it opens up further after a point in the story.

Yes, X/Y/OR/AS were all confirmed to be compatible with Sun/Moon.

I like ORAS better, but every Pokemon game is designed to be your first. Look at the cover of all of them and pick the one that looks coolest to you.

Between Omega Ruby vs. Alpha Sapphire, Groudon is much cooler than a big tuna. That said, look at this list: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/w...Alpha_Sapphire#Version-exclusive_Pok.C3.A9mon

It shows which Pokemon are exclusive to which versions, so pick the one with the Pokemon you like more. Neither one is better than the other, it's all preference.

EDIT: I also forgot about this, but one thing that puts ORAS above XY: some of the mega evolutions aren't present in XY that are in ORAS, so overall you'll get a better experience when connecting to other players.

I think they are mostly the same, some exclusives like Ho-Oh to OR and Lugia to AS. But you can get the other one easily online.

Yes, in ORAS you can catch many older legendary Pokemon.

ORAS is cool, I enjoyed it for what it was but X/Y arguably has the better Mon selection.

Playing X, I was enthralled with how many Mon are in the main game. Everytime you hit a bush, its something different.

The difficulty is baby mode though so turn off EXP share for a better run.

FYI: In X/Y endgame, you receive the starter that is weak to your first mon. Can help you pick your starter easier even though Froakie is the GOAT. Also you get a RBY starter also.

I do with OR
Groudon is a god with the primal evolution, it removes his weakness and is great to build a team around

Kyogre primal evolution actually makes him more vulnerable since it helps electric abilities

XY for anybody who hasnt played in a while.
Everybody saying ORAS isnt accounting for that. I promise you XY nostalgia will draw you in again unlike ORAS.

That's a matter of subjective opinion. I personally prefer Groudon, but they're both good.

They aren't the only exclusive Pokémon, though. This guide from Serebii is a good primer. Pick which set you prefer, and go with that.

Can I catch older legendary Pokemon in that game?

Oh, tonnes. You can catch most legendaries from throughout the series in the postgame.

And I can transfer my ORAS Pokemo n into sun/moon right?

You will, yes, although you'll have to pay the £5 yearly charge for the Pokémon Bank cloud software to transfer them over.

Thank you OP! I was literally going to make the same topic today because I finished Blue a few days ago.

I actually ended up buying Pokemon Y from Target for $29 but after reading the comments here on GAF and watching the Gametrailers reviews both on X/Y and OR/AS, OR/AS seems more up my alley (less backtracking, good post-game content, etc). I’m probably going to return Pokemon Y tomorrow and grab Alpha Sapphire on the 6th as Target has 20% off Pokemon games that week.

Personally, I was partial to X/Y because it's a new mainline entry rather than a remake and I like shiny new regions and (for me, never shiny D: ) new pokemon, but I tend not to do much with the postgame stuff so if postgame is the main draw for you, then from what others say you'd be better off with ORAS.

ORAS if you plan to do any multiplayer/competitive stuff, as it adds some new stuff that isn't compatible with XY.

If you don't plan on that, I found XY a better single player experience - Kalos is a better region than Hoenn imo and the distribution of Pokemon is much better. YMMV of course.

If you wanna play better Pokemon games maybe you should look the DS games (Platinum-HeartGold/Soulsilver-Black/White is imho the perfect trilogy of Pokemon).
For your question: I prefer X/Y over OR/AS as pokemon games but tha latter has the new Megas, a lot of old legendaries and you have already played X, so take OR/AS

I have a DS XL and my daughter has a 3ds. Is there any pokemon game I can buy that will let us trade and battle each other or do i need to upgrade to a 3ds?

X/Y. Alpha Sapphire/Omega Ruby just reminded me how much I hate Gen 3. I literally forcing myself to play it before I gave up.

edit: Aw shit just realized the super bump.

The DS pokemon games can trade between each other, regardless of if they're being played on a 3DS or DS.

So Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, HeartGold/Soul Silver and Black/White/1/2 are your options.

X and Y.

Hoenn is honestly an awfully designed region, maybe the worst. You can tell they sorta knew because they often have May come by and have you teleport to where you need to go.

Plus X and Y seems more tailored to new players with broader selections of Pokemon with new additions and old favorites.

With Oras you're stuck with the Hoenn selection, which is okay, but not for everyone.

I think you'll need to upgrade. I think they ended up shutting down the servers for the DS games, I might be mistaken though.
