Ghibli production department facing shutdown, will take a break and consider future

So long as they keep the Ghibli Museum open, I can deal with this. Them shutting down won't undo or erase their amazing films they've already put out. I'll always love those. But I haven't been to the museum yet. (;__; )

Nintendo should start an animated movie devision.

Oh man, if Nintendo and Ghibli merged....

I'd die from fanboy ecstasy.

Im not sure why anyone would want them to be purchased by Disney. I wouldnt want that ever. Independent or nothing.

What could of been done to salvage the studio? If they wanted to, they could Kickstart their next film and make more money... probably not going to happen, but that could of been a possibility. Disney probably loves it too.

People want talking cars over actual fantasy animation.

People please read duckrolls explanation of what happened / is happening. They have no talented directors so there is nothing to animate. People are either retired, dead, or no longer with the company.

Man if Hosada wasn't ran off by company culture...

IMHO the future of the studio rests on Goro Miyazaki and Polygon Pictures's hands. You can hate on CGI for as much as you like, but that Sanzoku no Musume Ronja sounds like something you expect from Ghibli (heck, from old Ghibli rather than the artsy Ghibli in recent years), and if they see it being a success it'll give them confidence to make more TV series. Because without Hayao Miyazaki their old model of only hand drawn movies just isn't viable and they need a new path to move forward.

I'm normally pessimistic, but for some reason I am hoping beyond hope that this is really only a short break while they get their bearings.

Still... dammit. Don't do this to me, Studio Ghibli.

It's better to end on a high note than to be dragged through the mud, as my grandfather had once said. I can still watch & enjoy their films at any time, & nothing will change that.

Wrong. It was essentially the Miyazaki company and he is gone. Takahata could make 10 more amazing films and they would all bomb.

Goddamn this, god. All this doom and gloom as if they weren't on their way out already

This news is making my soul hurt. Seeing Kiki at a super young age and Spirited Away in the theater got me hooked. Their style was always pleasing to the eyes and their stories and character pleasing to the heart.

Goodbye Ghibli.

Yeah I the context of the program was what Ghibli is going to do in the near future. It lines up with what we know about their plans though. I think I'll tweak it a bit more.

Nintendo never could make good storylines for their games, so that's pretty terrible idea. Their strenght always was solely in gameplay.

While his idea is indeed silly, your analogy makes no sense. They would hire animation talents for movies. Nintendo wouldn't use a game writer for a film script.

Shinkai is the Crytek of anime. His films are stunning visually, but leave a lot to be desired in just about every other aspect.

I have to disagree. Agartha's movie was pretty bad, but overall he's matured a lot. 5cm and Garden of Words are pretty great stuff.

Also, Hosoda seems to have find his dimension too. And I'm keeping a close eye Yasuhiro Yoshiura. Time of Eve was great, and Sakasama no Patema was interesting. Just needed to be a little less cliched and a little more personal like his first work.

If you're in the UK...

It's not like potentially talented directors don't exist in Ghibli. The two guys helping out Takahata, Yoshiyuki Momose and Osamu Tanabe could each probably take on a feature by themselves. They have experience with line direction, they have made their own creations, and Momose in particular is a veteran from the same era as Kondo.
Tsuka (@catsuka) reports that Mr. Momose will continue as is right now working for the studio on side projects, in what was the old Studio Kajino (or スタジオカジノ) a subsidiary of Studio Ghibli.

Also, no mention of Akihiko Yamashita as holder of that legacy? Only person apart of Mr. Miyazaki able to sneak-in a short of his own into Ghibli Museum's 'The Saturn Theater'! He seems to be gravitating towards Studio Khara, though. :p

Has anybody seen the documentary The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness? Is it a free documentary on Studio Ghibli? If not, where can I get it from?

I didn't mean it in a bad way. It was sad to see both of them go, but Kon had the chance to direct a number of movies and Kondo only directed one. That's all I meant.
While he only got the change to direct one movie, he worked alongisde Miyazaki and Takahata on such great classics as Future Boy Conan, Anne of Green Gables, Sherlock Hound, Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Princess Mononoke, etc.

That's like every animator's dream come true.

No i see what you meant. :)
What i was saying is that Kon's death personally hit me harder, because his potential was more evident to me, as a fan of his work.

He's just a Ghibli museum caretaker who ended up making a movie because his name is Miyazaki. That's not the recipe for a successful career.

in the doc The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness, he even flat out says he doesn't want to do movies because of a passion, but basically just because he had to.

Also, that movie really puts into perspective why Ghibli is closing down.

Pretty sure GKids just picked it up for theatrical distribution in the US this fall. I assume it will be a pretty limited release, so if you're lucky enough to live near an arthouse cinema they might show it.

Or I guess you could find it on the internet, probably.

I think it's too early to proclaim that. I say let the dust settle first and then we'll see what they are really planning.

So they will have some restructuring and continue to make stuff? That Ronja series from Goro is set to air starting this October.

maybe goro will make a good film one day.

Tales from Eathsea is a good movie.

By the way to all people desperately wishing for the Studio to continue. It won't be the same without Miyazaki. Also, you guys just have to accept that good things come to an end one day and can't go on forever and be a bit more appreciative about that and not just asking for "more, more, more!".
