GI article makes George Lucas sound KERRRAZZZY

I wonder how much influence he had on all the great Lucas arts adventure games.

Still kind of love him for just starting his own game studio and then to make everything but a star wars game for the first couple of years.

Star Wars: Imperial Commando, a sequel to Republic Commando, would have put the player in control of an Imperial assault team, but never made it out of the conceptual phase of development

Reading this makes very sad as I loved Republic Commando and a squeal would have been wonderful. I think it's time for another playthrough now that I think about it.

Fuck it Bring back Darth Vader as a clone at the end of episode 8

Two clones! One raised from birth by the Jedi, one by a Sith Lord. Then Anakin can truly fulfill his destiny to bring balance to the force. Georgie is on it right now.

"begun again, the Clone Wars have"

Have any of you played The Old Republic?

The Sith Warrior story is amazing. It's 200 hours of being a Darth Vader bad ass. It's free 2 play now and really, really fun if you're playing with friends. Then when you do quests you fight over (dice roll) picking the right response.

I feel bad for George. The man was(?) a very talented director in his youth. I think his fame might have ruined him for himself. But giving 4 billion dollars to charity was amazing. He will always have my respect.

4 Billion dollars is such a staggering amount to give away, that only a few like Bill Gates can touch and go beyond that. You can make all the shitty films you want or be entitled and obtruse when you do that. It doesnt make the prequels amazing or George Lucas redeemed as a filmmaker, but I still can't get over how massively crazy it is. And how right it is to do.

Man, just read all those posts complaining about the Darth "retcon".

I thought of myself as one crazy Star Wars nut, but 95% of the shit people complain about doesn't bother me. I don't mind anything really, even some of that absolutely atrocious EU material (Darksaber was hilarious).

I like the universe, I like the characters. It doesn't need to be perfection. It can be nothing but an action flick, or a serious emotional film. I'll still enjoy it.

Are things I don't like in the prequels? Yep. Are there things I don't like in the OT? Yep.

I hate the Vader NO in ROTS just as much as I hate how "fans" rejoiced over the removal of Yub Nub in ROTJ SE. (The celebration theme at the end of the current ROTJ is dull and uninspired).

FWIW, not calling people crazy or not fans, or superfans. Just don't get the attitude.

I read somewhere that he didn't really care then? I hear they just told Lucasarts to 'not lose money'.
Hah, I guess that's one way to run a compamy

That was indeed pretty amazing of him. How many other billionaires would ever do that.

I like to think that most fans have the following sentiment about GL:

"Thanks for creating the Star Wars franchise George Lucas, now please go away."

I can see why he didn't want to talk about force powers. Who'd want one character to basically own everyone in the Star Wars galaxy. They would of had to have Starkiller as a cameo or a statue on some planet.

Now about Disney... I can sum it up

Disney is the money pot that keeps the franchise alive in 20+ years.

I love this argument. Listen, I think the prequel trilogy have many many failings. Episode 2 is a rare example of a film I hate, but the prequel trilogy were popular with kids and sold boat loads of toys. That is one of the main reasons why Disney bought the franchise, however you might feel about that.

There are elements in the prequel trilogy that were aimed at older audiences. Those spectacularly fail. But the movies were also meant to win over young audiences and push large amounts of merchandise to them. If that was a simple thing to do... well you wouldn't see numerous people completely fail to do it.

There is much Lucas is deservedly criticized for. There is much he should still be given credit for. As pieces of entertainment for children, whether you think children should like them or not, they sure appear to have worked. They were technical achievements. They helped change how movies were shot and screened.

They were not, by any stretch of the imagination, good pieces of cinema... but the narrative that George is totally crazy and was never any good in the first place (or lost all his talent in the process) is a highly flawed one.

And yes, Starkiller is a dumb name that he originally came up with but he also rejected it for the less terrible Skywalker (which is still a dumb name). Presumably because it was dumb. It is dumber than Darth Insaneous in my opinion. I never said it was as bad as Darth Icky, just that it was nearly as bad.

I don't see why anyone would want to pay tribute to a terrible name like Starkiller.

Woah, woah, slow down there. Where did I ever say that Lucas was always a terrible filmmaker? All I was saying was that I disagreed that people dislike the prequel movies for being "kids movies." If anything, I think more people are mad that they weren't.

Has he given any of it away yet? I recall he committed to giving the $4 billion to charity.

I find it really strange that Lucas sold Star Wars to Disney in the first place. He's clearly a massive control freak about the franchise, can't stand the idea that anyone could do any aspect better than him, and doesn't need the money... I'm surprised he ever let it go.

A billion dollar payday is still a billion dollar payday.

I just would have thought that a guy who was so controlling over his franchise that he even dictated what happened in it's dumb Darth Maul video game wouldn't sell it for anything, especially when he was already a billionaire anyway.

I'm probably overthinking it though, you're likely right about the money being too tempting.

Maybe that is why he let it go. Because he felt he needed to stay away.

I saw an interview with him where he said that after Return of the Jedi, he went back to just being a stay-at-home dad and raise his daughter. Nothing wrong with that.

In all those years, Star Wars kept being what defined him. As fun as Star Wars was/is, people got way into that shit, and personally I can easily imagine how your ego might be inflated to extreme levels over the years. Particularly when you are only surrounded by "yes, george people". People in Hollywood doesn't give a shit. they say what they think important people wanna hear.

That is why it is hard for small upcoming directors to deal with big name actors. They all have this god complex that just develops in people because everyone acts so fucking unnatural around them.
There is no guidebook, for how not to let money or insufferable constant padding on the back turn you into a monster.

Not everyone is like this, but there is too many people in Hollywood who turn into mystified type assholes.

It seems like that began with Marlon Brando and it just became an actor thing.

The EU really got out of hand. I didnt even know there was an EU past the Dark Forces games. Goodness, that a lot of wasted resources to flesh out something that really wasn't necessary to flesh out. I gotta give it up to the fanboys. They're loyal.

I heard Kevin Smith talk about Bruce Willis, and it made me sad to hear that he was such a bully. Because Bruce Willis always has been one of my favorite heroes. He has also always been amazing on talkshows.

You are talking about something that you seemingly have absolutely no idea about.

OK. The action figure thing is straight out of Spaceballs. There is literally scene exactly like that. Also, not being able to say No to George is insane. I just hope to God now that Disney owns the franchise things will get better.

Think he got married again or met someone new. Probably just wants to relax and enjoy life. Sure he was probably aware people didn't think much of his recent Star Wars efforts and did the right thing in the end by allowing it to flurish in good hands.

I only played the first Force Unleashed but I liked him. They did a good job with him!

I wouldn't have a problem with him if it weren't canon (which it isn't now :3). He was so gary stu,
Beating Darth Vader handily and then taking on the emperor right afterwards and holding his own, being the inspiration for the republic, rescuing leia... its uh... a bit over the top
. Kyle Katarn & Dash Rendar were much more reasonable characters (who unfortunately are not canon now as well).

There are two sides to that story. The other is that Kevin Smith clearly had no idea what he was doing when it came to the action scenes (by his own admission all he's good at is dialogue, and that is evident in all of his movies) and that pissed Willis off since he's used to directors who actually know a thing or two directing actions movies, hence why he gave Smith such a hard time.

When you encounter a lack of expertise in real life, do you become a raging asshole? Would you do that to a colleague or arguably, your boss?

Has anyone besides Kevin Smith confirmed Willis' diva antics on set? Serious question here, I didn't read much about the whole ordeal.

Well presumably, most of these people are working in Hollywood and would like to be able to still work on projects that might happen to include Willis in the future. They aren't gonna wanna burn bridges.

Kevin Smith doesn't ever want to work with Willis again and so he can say whatever he likes.

I hope Disney retcons the prequel trilogy by opening up EP7 with some guy watching a Youtube clip of Attack of the Clones on his hologram projector and saying, "Man, this is the worst historical recreation of the clone wars I've ever seen."
