Children's stories have a rich tradition for being literally nightmare fuel, written with the expressed notion of scaring them into being model members of society.
Whether those methods were sound and actually made a difference in the long term is another matter entirely.
I'm glad that children's television continues to carry on this rich legacy.

Yeah, the Germans have a rich tradition of fucking brutal children's stories. I remember reading a couple of those in their original form at school, some awful (in a good way) stuff in there.
edit: The Moomin TV show was my favourite show as a kid (along with Ducktales), and some episodes scared me to death. Fuck you, The Groke (or "Hufsa", as I know her).

I distinctly remember a story book called "Struwwlpeter" which consists of nothing but nightmare fuel. There is a story about a boy who's a thumbsucker until a fucking monster appears and CUTS his thumbs off. Just look at the cover of the book. LOOK AT IT
Another story is about a boy who refuses to eat his soup and then promptly starves
Geez, just looking this stuff up on Wikipedia made me uneasy.
