Excellent taste, since both are Satoshi Kon joints. :D

Ahhh right, that's probably how I found Perfect Blue after seeing Paprika. I think I bought Millennium Actress too but never got around to watching it.

If you want to see the good stuff, seek out movies, not TV shows. The budget spent on animation is comparable, but instead of spreading it out over dozens of hours, they can pour everything into 90 minutes.

Oh, this is definitely the route I already take. Like I said, I love movies produced by Madhouse and Studio Ghibli. Even though I thought movies like The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Summer Wars had a really stupid stories, Madhouse did a great job on the animation, and the movies look beautiful.

It also helps that I am too lazy and impatient to sit through an entire season of anime. Having all the story told to me in one short sitting is preferable.

And, yeah, it is kind of a shame that most people equate anime to the low quality mainstream TV BS. Like, Alex and Rorie are huge film buffs, and I would love to hear what they would have to say about Satoshi Kon's films, but they seem to only mention Miyazaki films when talking about anime movies. They don't even seem to acknowledge non-Miyazaki Ghibli movies.

I have hard time getting into newer animes, maybe except for Gurren Lagann and Girls und Panzer, and maybe Jojo. However I always have nostalgic love for older ones though, like Patlabor.

I guess Alex and Rorie's podcasts only cover the movies that are showing in theatres, and I'm not even sure about the popularity of non-Ghibli movies, whether they have a chance to be shown on American theatres.

I do wish their movie podcasts would go into more foreign movies though. Did they watch Das Weiße Band? Or Caché, or Tokyo Family? I doubt that foreign movies are popular enough in America. Maybe we could send Alex and Rorie some foreign DVDs.

Maybe this is the start of chip in money and send Alex some hentai foreign DVDs

There are quite a number of well animated, good TV anime series.

The Metal Gear videos are seriously depressing me. I'm not interested in anything the site has to offer anymore except that feature. It's like a drug.

As someone who loves Game Informer's Super Replay videos, I agree.

Well, except for the whole "not interested in anything the site has to offer" thing.

Does anybody know when the Royal Rumble is going to start? I think it said 8:30am pacific. Am I correct? Also where is it going to be streamed at, Twitch?

As much as Giant Bomb has been building up Dan winning the Rumble and finally facing Alex, I'm starting to have my doubts. If he gets an early number I can't see him mowing through as much of the opposition as Alex did last year. There has to be a target on his back.

I am gunning for Dr. Tracksuit!

I think I like anime as a concept more than I like it as a reality, but I'm still pretty happy when I find a show that actually grabs me (which is like 1 out of 3 that I start watching).

It's still probably for jerks. I'm probably a jerk.

This is more exciting than the real royal rumble!

Dan's going to come in with an alliance, and get betrayed again.

I also like j-pop, which probably means I'm the antichrist.

Going into tangent a bit, which recent years JPop bands / artists would you recommend? I was into J-pop, but went into more rock, metal, and jazz for the past 5 - 10 years.

I just found out Silent Siren, and they have really poppy rock songs.

You guys are forgetting how dumb hollywood action movies can be. Rewatch Escape from LA, it's pretty much Metal Gear without the giant robots.

i'm sorry, but no, "hrrgghhh the power in my arm is taking me ovvvveeeeerrrrrr" is literally the most anime-ass trope imaginable. it's so anime, even anime makes fun of it:

This is like when people compare P4 to saved by the bell or some shit, lol. guys, just call a spade a spade.

HATE the music. I have... other interests in k-pop.

Am I unable to use the sale to upgrade to a yearly subscription if I am a monthly subscriber? I only see the $49.99 option for the yearly subscription.

Recent stuff? Actually what got me back into it after a while away from it was the emergence of "weird" idol groups. Apparently the idol supply can't meet the demand these days, which blows my mind. So you get "alternative" idol stuff. I like weird pop.

BiS (Brand-new Idol Society) just recently broke up, their whole gimmick was to be the "anti-idols," so they danced poorly, shouted a lot, covered themselves in fake blood, and their music was mostly rock/metal. It should, by definition, have been shit. But somehow they had good songwriters going for them, and put out catchy music. They also seemed to spend more time being naked than clothed, which makes finding work safe videos a little difficult. Here's a couple.

BISimulation
Fly
STUPiG (maybe watch your computer volume before clicking that one)

They even put out a collaboration with noise legends Hijokaidan, which would have sold me if the other material hadn't already.

Suki Suki Daisuki (this is a cover of a relatively well-known song from the 80s)

BELLRING Shoujo Heart are a really hard sell. They're like the Neutral Milk Hotel of girl groups. The music sounds like it was recorded in a garage by someone super obsessed with 60's psych rock like early Floyd or 13th Floor Elevators or something. The girls can't really sing. It all adds up to a weird, trippy collage of circus music and melodies probably stolen from Beatles b-sides.

サーカス&恋愛相談
c.a.n.d.y. - this one is pretty much a Blur ripoff. I don't understand this band.

Shiritsu Ebisu Chuugaku are Momoiro Clover Z's "little sister" group, and are getting really popular, quickly. Their music ranges anywhere from straightforward rock/pop to metal, punk and prog. I could probably link to several videos but this live video of them dressed in 80's clothes and makeup, performing in the pouring rain and dancing in combat boots should probably tell you most of what you need to know.

I have endless love for Dempagumi Inc's brand of ADHD saccharine insanity.

DenDen Passion

ChururiChurura
Also their completely shit but completely awesome cover of Sabotage

Despite my Kyary avatar, her last album kind of sucked. The singles are still solid.

Everybody knows about Babymetal by now right?

I just got Bakubaku Dokin's most recent EP the other day. weird low-key/lo-fi... look, I don't know what to call this. I guess they were on one of the Katamari soundtracks.

怪造人間
Sampler

Not really pop, but they have pop elements, Gaki Ranger put out my favorite album of any genre (electro-rap in this case, I guess) this year. Fans of charisma.com take note.

Mazu wa Karate Chop

I seriously cannot tell the difference between the K-pop and J-pop idol scene, other than K-pop mostly tries to crib from the American pop scene and J-pop just tries to be cutesy.

No, you pretty much nailed it. They're both terrible. Kpop seems to mostly be knockoffs of early 2000's american pop and jpop is just an arms race to see who can be the most kawaii. Or in the case of the men's groups, who can steal the hearts of the most housewives.

Not really saying that they're terrible, as there are some gems which I like. J-pop to me has always been THE music for rhythm games. Though very few stick with me outside of the games. :P

Weirdly enough I do get into some vocaloid stuff because they seem like an indie-version of J-pop as weird as it sounds.
