Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

normally i let comments like this slide, but honestly you need to take a step or two back. they're still reeling from the death of their friend and quite frankly they've done more than anyone has a right to expect from them. you don't put something like this behind you, not when that person's absence is evidenced across from your desk every single day. this isn't like a family member died and someone has to take some time off and deal with it in private. this is right up in everyone's face and will be every single day for an indefinite amount of time.

also, trackmania has consistently shitty QLs. it's always been the live shows that were more entertaining.

last i checked they're still charging money for entertaining content.

unless that policy has changed, we're going on now 2 weeks and if this week doesnt shape up with TNT and UPF, it'll be 3 weeks, which is 1 month of mebership with nothing new since the wednesday half-thrown-together show back on July 3 that was actually up to par with the last few years they built the site's fanbase on.

$4.95 a month for content < thats the issue

the 2 new pieces of content, patricks...whatever thats called which wasnt a Scoop nor a EB, was boring and not what i want from him and now this trackmania DLC is the the other piece. and the bombcast didnt even have rorie for whatever reason.

if Jeff aint "into video games" anymore then he needs to get people in who are, he looked at it as "a job" when his dad was in the hospital for a year and kept making content and putting on the show he asks money for(TNTs/UPFs/ect...), so did Patrick when his dad actually died.

when i pay for XBL, it doesnt get to just go offline for 3 weeks and tell me "im not really into providing what you originally signed up for" and its the same exact price for a GB membership as XBL. and they already used up the "first week back" when we then found out they already knew about it a week before hand..okay fine, now were in the 2nd week, no monday vid, no mailbox, no scoops, no jartime...

1 trailer for an obscure game and this QL with a bunch of out of place crude sexual humor which ive never heard any of them use not once in the last 2-3 years, and jeff not even doing his own style, coupled with neither Vinny nor Brad actually providing anything by asking questions or making comments to keep the QL going, just dead air and jeff acting completely un-jeff like

next week is the last friday of the month. aka the last day of (normally)schedualed premium content.

is their automated billing system going to "take a few weeks off" from charing us come August 1st, or better yet, pro-rate into next month, since even if there is a UPF this week and next, its still just 2 episodes with no scoops or jar times, even if that final week is back on schedual, thats 1 week of premium content. for a month's membership.

do i get to tell GB that my friend just died and i want a month of free premium access since im not really feeling like paying them?

any other subscription based service goes out for 3 weeks, you get pro-rated for those weeks. and im sure they're all still collecting checks from CBSi these last 3 weeks as well, if everything was availible, like every other gaming site then you can give me the "someone died, give them a break for not producing new content"

Angry Joe hasnt made any new content in almost the same length of time as BG has, till finally that Civ5 video, but guess what, Angry Joe doesnt charge me money for that content so theres no expectations and no reason for me to get mad at him, just wishing he would put out more stuff so i can be entertanied.

same goes for Gametrailers and their entire lineup of shows, all of which paid respects to Ryan in each of their shows, TotalBuiscit and any other people who make gaming content.

so to quote you, i too normally let things slide, but when you go into peoples pockets, there is no more "GB community is like a family", as long as that fee is attached its a business. soon as thats changed, then you take as long as you want to make content, this aint no different than Kickstarter, if Tim Shafter or Brad Muir or anyone else at DoubleFine died tomorrow, those backers arent going to change their already built frustration for lact of promised content.

that what this rant is about, its got nothing to do with being incesitive towards ryan's passing or how long it takes someone to grive over it.

While you technically have a point, and it might be the "principal" of the whole thing, if you're that hard off for 5 bucks then just cancel your membership. Case Closed.

The amount of content they offer for free every single week offsets the times they are slow on paid content (in my opinion). That ESPECIALLY applies to right now.

So you are quibbling about $4.95 ? ...Well its probably half that as its only been 2 weeks since Ryan's passing. Im sure they are well aware they have paying subscribers but 99.9% of the community (Yes, you are that 0.1%) have been sensitive to the guys as they have lost a dear close friend and colleague. Im sure you listened to last weeks podcast where Jeff re-affirmed their commitment to providing content, if you are unhappy with this (as others have said) you are more than welcome to unsubscribe and take your money elsewhere

Your comments come across as very insensitive, I dont care what you say.

Wow. Just unsubscribe if you really feel like they're not putting out enough content, regardless of current circumstances. Subscribe again when they've fulfilled your quota.

I just realized this is the same guy that came into our Madden online franchise thread in the Gaming Community forum the other day and started ranting about Aaron Hernandez out of no where. LOL

Dude doesn't deserve his Jeff avatar.

Just unsubscribe until they're over the grieving period for one of their best friends. Very insensitive.

While I agree to a point, I'd say at least they are back to a somewhat normal routine, and of course you can't expect their fucking attitudes to be back to normal so quickly, so I appreciate that. Also your enjoyment of their recent content sounds very YMMV, so you know, it's probably your fucking problem.

Also when did 3 weeks = 1 month?

Trust me, there were worst droughts of premium content before without a death of one of its members.

Imagine how much cheaper it would've been to not make this post.

I was surprised they even kept trucking on with the bombcast and content the last two weeks, after everything that's happened. Most people expressed that they would have been fine with the guys taking a break. Really shows how commited they are, especially to the mantra of "the Bombcast never stops".

He might be confused. The thread title says "We love you, Ryan Davis," not "We payed $4.95 for promised content."

And just so you know, maybe it's different for you, but most of us do think that this community is like a family, and pay the subscription because we like these guys, we like what they do, and we want to support them.

As far as I concerned, they can take two months, let alone two weeks, if they need to. I'll keep supporting them and I know many here will too.

That's what this rant is about.

Also I just want to say that I enjoyed patrick's rogue legacy video, though I kept wanting to shout "USE THE BARBARIAN'S SHOUT."

What I find hilarious is him saying Giant Bomb hasn't used crude sexual humour in the last 2-3 years.

And he calls himself a Giant Bomb fan?

Also, it's okay not to be a subscriber, long-term or short-term, even if you like what they do. There's never going to be anything wrong with that.

You have to be one miserly sonofabitch to complain about the lack of GB content when one of the site's two founding members died just two weeks ago.

They even stated on this week's podcast that they're working on getting stuff up and running again this week - give them a little bit of breathing room as they get back on their feet. Sentimental stuff aside, the loss of Ryan has blown a hole in the Giantbomb machine that's going to take some time to repair.

The vast majority of people in aware of who subscribed to Giant Bomb in the first place did so because they wanted to support these guys due to the familiarity they engendered and entertainment they provided.

I subscribe to support them - I do expect content to justify that subscription but given what has happened I'm happy to just support them right now because when people are having a hard time you should try not to be an entitled selfish prick. You don't owe them your money, and as mentioned if you're dissatisfied you can unsubscribe.

There's been lulls in GiantBomb content that have made me unsubscribe in the past, but to hold the death of a friend against them for having a bad month would make me feel like an asshole.

AngryJoe and Totalbiscuit may not charge for their content, but I wouldn't suddenly turn adblock on and unsubscribe if their output suffered due some tragedy.
That would also make me feel like an asshole

The idea of dirty humour being out of character for Jeff also baffles me. They've always been dirty motherfuckers. Hell, Jeff, Ryan and Alex have written and performed a humorous song about anal sex.
Vinny saying cunt is a meme for goodness sake.

Not to mention that for guys, sex related topics and humour seem to do a keen job of distracting the mind from whatever else may he on it.

Again, cancel if you're dissatisfied, but you don't get to put a timer on grief because you give them $5.

There is a difference between being right and being a dick. You are right but I kinda don't like you...

I've been thinking about subscriptions for a while (since their relocation to CBS), but I'll air those thoughts at another time since things are still, understandably, raw. Timing is important, and they are going through, at least for me, an incomprehensible amount of emotion, and I will support them, as I have since the inception of the website. If you have issues, send them to their support staff, unsubscribe, and let it be.

not liking the first week of content since everything went to shit.

the track mania video was just way out in left field in terms of humor and attitude and just seemed forced and boring.

hopefully a TNT and UPF later this week can get them back in the grove of things.

You need to get a grip of yourself pal. The worlds of a manchild/child [delete where appropriate] who has no understanding of the rocky road the guys are currently on.

Stop being aselfish, and think before posting next time. I'm not actually sure why we allow someone like you posting here. Hardly the type of member we want.

I'm a huge bellend.

Their friend just passed away literally days after his wedding, if you don't like that they are taking time to mourn his passing then cancel your subscription and jog on.

I sincerely hope you never suffer the loss of someone close in your family or circle of friends any time soon and I hope no one forces you to go back to work straight away then maybe you will know what it feels like.

That post wasn't at all insensitive, and he is technically correct. "Canceling" doesn't net you a refund for the rest of the year, or this month. I can't believe some of the ways you guys dogpile people here. Especially when he is correct, no one else just gets to stop production at work if their at work friend dies.

Personally I don't really care but that guy does and it is totally fine.

I've replied angrily to things since Ryan's death but I've realised it's better to leave it/ignore it. Everybody's entitled to their opinion.

Personally, I pay my money to GB so I know I have access to their backlog of premium content, so that whenever they do new stuff I can watch it (I don't expect a constant flood of it) and, most importantly, to support these guys.

They've lost a close friend and colleague. Cut them some slack!

There's should be a big sticky on GAF that says:

"Come on, guys, chill. Don't be a dick."

He might have a fragment of a point to make, but seriously, one of the guys who founded the site just died.

Would you complain as much if you subscribed to the New York Post for the tech articles and David Pogue died? (Awkward example because his blogs are free online, I know). Just... God damn, give the guys a bit of time. Jeff and Ryan have been friends for getting on 20 years. Anyone thinking of slamming them for lack of content should put themselves in their shoes for 5 minutes. Take your best friend, now imagine you've worked with them and have been doing weekly, if not more frequent, content with them for the last 8 years. Now suddenly take that away, a week after he got married, and try to figure out what the fuck you're going to do. Not just on the site, but in general. Jeff posted a picture to Twitter the other day that said "Sums it up" with "Future" and "Shit" on the radio... The guy's practically lost a brother, folks should cut him a little slack.

I understand that completely, and totally agree.

But I can't blame anyone for lamenting the lack of paid content, and I don't think they should be chastised for doing it.

I can't believe some of the ways you guys dogpile people here. Especially when he is correct, no one else just gets to stop production at work if their at work friend dies.

Personally I don't really care but that guy does and it is totally fine.

Of course it was insensitive.

but they are complaining about a monthly subscription being auto-renewed, when its easy for them to cancel whenever. the subscription gives you access to all the premium content they have made previously, and is worth it for that.

its entirely possible that the GB guys might have just taken a break (or e3 or penny arcade or something) and produced just as little content these past two weeks.

this guy seems to think they are entitled to some arbitrary level of content that they enjoy. thats not the deal with any kind of entertainment people pay for.

I think it's a testament to the style and personality of the Giantbomb crew that many people don't feel like they're paying customers, but friends supporting and appreciating a site that has given them much entertainment over the years.

Obviously that guy feels differently, but eh.

I take more issue with the guy stating they only get a "first week back" to get their shit together and also taking criticism with Jeff "not doing his own style" in the Trackmania QL as if his BEST FRIEND did not just die.

I understand that completely, and totally agree.

But I can't blame anyone for lamenting the lack of paid content, and I don't think they should be chastised for doing it.
It's not what he said, it was the way he said it. It's not like they were just work colleagues, they all lived and breathed each other and have done for over 10 years in some cases. It has only been a couple of weeks since the guy died and you expect them to start churning out content just because some entitled whiner posts on a forum.

He was whining because he thinks that the subscription entitles him to premium content, you pay to support the site which in turn gives you access to the premium content, do you really think your $5 a month even comes close to covering the cost of making videos?

Some people don't subscribe just to support the site.
