Giant Bomb Thread #5 - We love you, Ryan Davis

I dont know even know why these last two weeks is the tipping point for some. Havent people been complaining about subscriber content for month?

People were complaining a few months back, and then GB started doing Bombasticas, Wednesday Release Shows and Unprofessional Fridays. The Wednesday show didn't really work out, but at least we got Friday shows and the occasional Bombasticas.

Unprofessional Fridays was a great solution to there being too little content. I can totally see myself resubscribing only for watching UPF every week once/if they get back to doing those regularily.

Some people pay just for the access to premium content, if im not mistaken it is still stated that they produce it regularly on the purchase page. If it is part of the subscription than you are actually entitled to it. It's not whining to expect it. There's nothing wrong with expecting it at all.

It's not insensitive to want something you are paying for. There is no need for the dogpile just because the guy values his $5 more than us.

I think it was just a completely unnecessary post by him. If he's not happy with his subscription, he should just unsubscribe. There was no need to post an insensitive rant in this thread. What does that accomplish for him except clearly upset people who are big supporters of Giant Bomb? It more or less feels like a troll type of post. When I'm not happy with my subscription somewhere, I don't go somewhere to vent about it. I unsubscribe and forget about it. If he's truly unhappy about his service, he should vent to Giant Bomb directly...not this thread. This isn't the place for it and I find it really sad that someone vents about 5 dollars and cannot comprehend why things may be slow for a bit when a huge contributor of the site passes away which obviously strongly affects all the guys.

That is what they are charging, we didn't make up the prices.

If you're not getting what you paid for, ask for that money back and don't pay them. I'm not saying this as a snarky "oh you're so entitled" thing, it's just the smart thing to do with your money.

I also agree that giantbomb shouldn't continue like this if they don't want to lose their paying audience, but right now I'm willing to give them another week to get back to a somewhat normal schedule.

I was thinking about this a little before I saw that massive whiny post asking for more content. I was thinking that it's going to be natural for the audience's grieving timeline to be way different than the GB crew's.

We may be feeling less intense emotions over Ryan's passing after a couple days or a week, but the crew will feel more hurt for longer. And, at some point, there would be audience members asking for new content more quickly than the crew might be up to making it. Figured that would be awkward.

I honestly didn't expect there to be a reaction as insensitive and whiny as the one posted here earlier so soon afterword. I thought it would take a bit longer. Silly me and my expectations. but I was right that it was real awkward once it happened.

Another comment about time off and leave from work after a death. For those who were saying earlier that GB might have taken a month off or something before producing work again. GB is part of a big company now and those companies might have strict rules for days off before returning to productivity. The place I work for gives you 3 days if an immediate family member passes. A friend? Nothing. Anything beyond that is vacation time or time off unpaid. blows.

^i agree. My work wouldn't give me an hour off of a friend or coworker passed.

Not saying that to agree with the original sentiment over 5 dollars, because the nature of what they do requires a certain level of good humor and composure.

last i checked they're still charging money for entertaining content.

unless that policy has changed, we're going on now 2 weeks and if this week doesnt shape up with TNT and UPF, it'll be 3 weeks, which is 1 month of mebership with nothing new since the wednesday half-thrown-together show back on July 3 that was actually up to par with the last few years they built the site's fanbase on.

$4.95 a month for content < thats the issue

the 2 new pieces of content, patricks...whatever thats called which wasnt a Scoop nor a EB, was boring and not what i want from him and now this trackmania DLC is the the other piece. and the bombcast didnt even have rorie for whatever reason.

if Jeff aint "into video games" anymore then he needs to get people in who are, he looked at it as "a job" when his dad was in the hospital for a year and kept making content and putting on the show he asks money for(TNTs/UPFs/ect...), so did Patrick when his dad actually died.

when i pay for XBL, it doesnt get to just go offline for 3 weeks and tell me "im not really into providing what you originally signed up for" and its the same exact price for a GB membership as XBL. and they already used up the "first week back" when we then found out they already knew about it a week before hand..okay fine, now were in the 2nd week, no monday vid, no mailbox, no scoops, no jartime...

1 trailer for an obscure game and this QL with a bunch of out of place crude sexual humor which ive never heard any of them use not once in the last 2-3 years, and jeff not even doing his own style, coupled with neither Vinny nor Brad actually providing anything by asking questions or making comments to keep the QL going, just dead air and jeff acting completely un-jeff like

next week is the last friday of the month. aka the last day of (normally)schedualed premium content.

is their automated billing system going to "take a few weeks off" from charing us come August 1st, or better yet, pro-rate into next month, since even if there is a UPF this week and next, its still just 2 episodes with no scoops or jar times, even if that final week is back on schedual, thats 1 week of premium content. for a month's membership.

do i get to tell GB that my friend just died and i want a month of free premium access since im not really feeling like paying them?

any other subscription based service goes out for 3 weeks, you get pro-rated for those weeks. and im sure they're all still collecting checks from CBSi these last 3 weeks as well, if everything was availible, like every other gaming site then you can give me the "someone died, give them a break for not producing new content"

Angry Joe hasnt made any new content in almost the same length of time as BG has, till finally that Civ5 video, but guess what, Angry Joe doesnt charge me money for that content so theres no expectations and no reason for me to get mad at him, just wishing he would put out more stuff so i can be entertanied.

same goes for Gametrailers and their entire lineup of shows, all of which paid respects to Ryan in each of their shows, TotalBuiscit and any other people who make gaming content.

so to quote you, i too normally let things slide, but when you go into peoples pockets, there is no more "GB community is like a family", as long as that fee is attached its a business. soon as thats changed, then you take as long as you want to make content, this aint no different than Kickstarter, if Tim Shafter or Brad Muir or anyone else at DoubleFine died tomorrow, those backers arent going to change their already built frustration for lact of promised content.

that what this rant is about, its got nothing to do with being incesitive towards ryan's passing or how long it takes someone to grive over it.

Well...you're not exactly wrong...but you're a fuckin' idiot.

It's been a week. Give them some time yeah?

That's what I don't understand. If you're not happy with the subscription, cancel it, and keep your glorious $5. There are people here and out there that feel like their $5 is justifiable. I don't see how people can expect them to just hop back into a flow as if nothing happened, they're human beings and when devastating things happen they practically have to readjust themselves. How people cope with loss is different for everyone.

I do think that people tend to forgot that it's not the fact that they lost their friend that would make the transition a bit slow. They lost a core member of their business, from a team that isn't exactly big. It's not like his death won't directly impact on their business even without the personal baggage.

Where do you people work? My work allows you to take multiple days off for grieving if someone passes away close to you.

This.

They lost twenty percent of their core workforce in some respects. Not even taking into account the emotional and social impacts this would have on the other four guys, there is going to be a significant dip in productivity.

I wasn't going to post because I have nothing more to add that hasn't already been said but I super aggravated with some Comcast bullshit right now, so I'm having a hard time just letting it slide.

If you cancel your subscription because you don't think you are getting the appropriate value for your money, that makes all the sense in the world but if in the same breath you suggest that they should have sucked it up and should be back to their normal content production routine by now, you lack any kind of reasonable empathy from my point of view. Not only have they lost a long time friend, they lost a major content contributor and the content they produce is appealing because of the off-the-cuff humor, which isn't likely something that can be switched on at will when you are grieving.

Unprofessional Fridays is the best thing they've been doing recently. And Vinny did Bioforge while Tricky did Spookin with Scoops. All great Premium Videos.

Feels weird to make this thread and then be absent during its most astonishing, heartbreaking period. Not sure what more can be said, but yeah. RIP duder.

Glad the guys are back making at least some content. The Bombcast was wonderful this week, keep Drew on please I beg you.

Honestly, I completely agree with this. Leading up to the July 4th weekend they were easily generating more content than I could consume but I get others have different expectations.

Giant Bomb have still been putting out the bombcast every week and are now starting to put out quick looks again, and those two are probably the biggest hits for the site, so they're prioritising I guess.

Also, in a slightly depressing thought, the last two weeks have probably provided the site with their highest visitor numbers ever. I don't think any CBSi overlords will be miffed at them, at all.

I dont know even know why these last two weeks is the tipping point for some. Havent people been complaining about subscriber content for month?

Sounded like he was a new subscriber?

I've worked with small companies where we've had a member die and it was always a struggle to figure out how to handle it in terms of financial support. Using the sub money from the few weeks where they aren't doing the standard live content is a nice gesture to the fans, Ryan's family and is something that (depending on the environment) could be sold to CBSi executives. Also, logistically, it could obviously be calculated and paid out over time to reduce the impact on cash flow.

To be fair though, I have no idea how many subs they have now? I'm thinking like 15,000? Been a long time since I paid any attention.

so i think they need to make a new official segment of the bombcast
vinny caravella, family handy man

just vinny talking about whatever house shit he did this past week. 55 gallon jugs of water. killing gofers. whatever

What if he was killing gofers with 55 jus of water? Gotta flush them out somehow

WOW. People can't read, can they? He's not asking for them to make content, he's asking for them to roll back the billing period because they haven't made content. He's not rushing them to make content. When you pay for a subscription and they don't provide the service, no matter the reason, they rollback the billing.

Read, people. Stop dog piling like a mob and open your eyes. Sick of this shit on GAF.

It's five fucking dollars

There's "principle of the thing" and then there's being a butt over less than the price of a sandwich with something major hanging over the crew

We read his post just fine and have clearly said we understand his point of view but thought it was an unnecessary post and if he's unhappy, he should vent to Giant Bomb...not this thread

Why? Is this not a thread to discuss Giant Bomb and everything it entails?

And you may have read it fine, but others did not. People are literally saying "they're not making content because they're friend died". A fine reason, but that's not what the post is about at all.

Some of us are saying that they should ask for a refund, which, ya know, is basically the same thing.

Right now a rollback is probably not on their minds because of reasons, but I'm sure that if it's a vocal enough issue they'll do it. They've done it before. So it's best to give Rorie a message on the site.

There has been other posts in this thread. There has been at least one poster claiming that they should be back to normal by now.

Also, this:

If Jeff aint "into video games" anymore then he needs to get people in who are, he looked at it as "a job" when his dad was in the hospital for a year and kept making content and putting on the show he asks money for(TNTs/UPFs/ect...), so did Patrick when his dad actually died.

suggests that he believes the content should still be coming, regardless of what he claims by the end of the rant.

I've been a fan of the site since it began and have never paid a dime. I was under the assumption that the subscription thing was for supporting the site and not a "pay for a service" type deal.

But hey thats just me. It's not like they lock out a lot of their content

You have missed out on a ton of great stuff.

I knew this thread would turn into this at some point, tact on the internet never lasts. So much baseless speculation on the staff's behalf. Unsubscribe if you don't like the content and resubscribe later if you want, done deal.
