The whole point of the GB thing is for people to know the personalities and tastes of the people on the site, so their consumer advice holds more weight. When their opinion is wholly out of whack with everyone, their opinion holds no weight as a consumer.

That's why people care.

Are their opinions on this really that far out of whack, or did they just not make as big a fuss as people would have liked? I'd prefer if they were more vocal about the shit MS was trying to pull, but I feel like they're behaving as they usually would about stuff like this. They cared even less about online checks when Ubisoft implemented their ass-backwards system on the PC a few years ago (when most of them were still on board the "PC gaming is dying" train). I don't like how they handle it, but I've learned to separate their opinions about games from their opinions about policies like this, and still find "value" in what they say about the games themselves - even if I really only care about one or two of the guys' opinions at all.

This. A consumer advocate who is out of touch with the consumer's reality and wants, is of very little use.

Well, I meant for the people who feel that. They're out of touch with my tastes, but they are in every other way too, so it's not a big deal for me.

Damn Scoops scooping and all. CBS must feel really giddy that they bought Giantbomb. Also, GB fans are they worst. I, for one, respect their various opinions on DRM and whatnot. Grow up people, its their opinion on the policy and you can form your own one. In fact, I am happy that they don't bend to forum outrage.

But it is an opinion. Why do we have to totally agree with everything a web site we like says?

I never got the impression that GB supported DRM or anything like that. What I got was a wait and see attitude, which is the right move from them I reckon. Don't expect them to champion a cause just because you want them to, and then get mad or annoyed at them when they don't.

I don't understand why it matters what GB thought of the XBONE DRM policies. Why do some people need them to be outraged? What does anyone gain from that? GB doesn't exist to confirm their users' opinions, but rather to have their own. If Jeff says he doesn't care about the 24-hour-login stuff (I don't think he did, but hypothetically speaking), who gives a shit? I mean I would disagree with him, but I'm not going to sit here and be outraged or say that he's stupid for thinking so. I feel it's often the same with game reviews, some people feel the need to have the review confirm their own opinion; if it doesn't match up with their own experience, the review and/or its score is bullshit.

This. All of this.

The GB guys reviewing facts and get an informed opinion on something, what a novel idea! If you ever expect the GB guys to come join the torches and pitchforks rabid mob, you have a long long wait ahead of you. If you need Giant Bomb, or Gamasutra to validate your feelings by showing outrage then maybe its time to re-evaluate.

Yes. Exactly that is why I find this huge uproar about this site quite irritating. They never really supported the whole thing, and they are trying to approach things from balanced perspective. Just because you like Sony, doesn't mean they have to.

I believe that Jeff said that that was what he intended Giant Bomb to be.

Well, perhaps you missed the part where they had to add review section to the site just to get approved by publisher and developers to be sent informations, have interviews and get games sent to them?

So I see nothing on the schedule for today. I can already tell that them not being in the office on monday worked out great.

Well I bet they get paid less in advertising on a one hour video than it costs them in man hours and equipment.

Nothing new though. Most game sites lose money at the moment. That is why most are now owned by big media corps who can minimize the losses in the hope that advertising will pick up again with the economy.

1up was sold like three times in five years - each time for less money. IGN sold for a lot less than Newscorp originally paid for it, etc. Look at how much Polygon spent to set a site up from scratch and hire all that staff. Even with big deals like the Internet Explorer thing there is no way they are even breaking even at the moment - let alone paying off that initial investment. The VC group behind the Verge must anticipate a return to healthy margins in the future or they have wasted an awful lot of money.

Don't think so but.... Trackmania2 Stadium is officially released today

Is that why the beta is trying to update and failing to do so? Bahhh. Does this mean I need to buy it? I hate to do so when there's only really two populated servers, and even those are empty when the europeans are asleep ><

Last night I saw John Drake on the local news in eastern North Carolina talking about Fantasia. That was pretty trippy.

Give me a break. Fucking CNN and the BBC were more vocal than them. The major gaming press was mostly silent. They should have been foaming at the mouth over a issue like this as the impact on the consumer far and wide was fucking huge. 8-4, Annoyed Gamer, YouTube gaming personalities and the consumers seemed like the only ones that gave a shit while they waited for Sony to implement the same policies so they could say, "see, told you so, welcome to your DRM future".
CNN and BBC don't rely heavily on Microsoft for content, they can afford to be more vocal. 8-4 is a translating company, YouTube gaming personalities don't have access to MS and get their money by reacting in the way you'd want them to.

This really isn't a gaming site issue, it's an industry wide issue where one hand feeds the other.

I felt most of the Giant Bomb guys did a good job explaining their thought process and reasoning during this whole mess (especially Jeff).

The only exception really was Ryan, who seems to struggle articulating himself when it comes to large industry movements. He gets wrapped up in a tangent or false equivalency.

Aside from that, they nailed the caution-without-hyperbole approach, and I would put money on that Xbox One DRM video they did being watched by at least a couple influential people in the industry - which is far more illuminating than a few outraged tweets or podcast rants.

Ryan Davis is a well known corporate apologist.

Also a narc.

Patrick and Vinny saw the desaster coming and stood up for what is good and right in the world *cryingeagleamericanflagsalute*

I kind of doubt they'd describe themselves as consumer advocates.

but they're not consumer advocates...

lol, what? When did Giant Bomb become a consumer advocacy group? They take in electronic gaming news and publicize their opinions on it.

English isn't my first language, but based on its definition consumer advocate seemed to fit:

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/business-english/consumer-advocate said:
a person whose job is to protect the rights of customers, for example by giving advice, testing products, or trying to improve laws relating to the sale of goods:

All of their coverage is targeted towards the consumers of the video game industry, they write reviews as buyers' advice, that seems pretty much in-line with the above to me.

People will defend them on this and have been for quite a while. They aren't impartial even if Jeff gets mad when people bring it up on tumblr. The complete indifference when all the rumors were circulating was astounding to me. People may not come for news to GB (that may change if Patrick has anything to say about it) but I'd think a modicum of respect for your customers may help things. I know I haven't been on the site as much since then and I'm not sure I plan on renewing my premium subscription.

Well you nailed the whole disingenuousness thing didn't ya?

Surely it should be Patman's choice of game for TNT?

Remember when this thread was fun and about the dumb stuff GB were putting out?

Now it is bitching and moaning that GB didn't parrot back the same views that people had already decided upon.

Even if Ryan did come out and support DRM (he didn't - but for arguments sake) then it was his opinion and lets people have a discussion about it. so what if Vinny thinks Gamestop are scum. He is entitled to say that. Many agree.

They were not reviewing the consoles. They were not telling people what to buy. They were highlighting the restrictions and differences and letting consumers make up their own minds. If they had ignored it all and dismissed any backlash then you might have a point.

You want them to be impartial but your complaint seems to be that they didn't take sides strongly enough against the company you have decided was in the wrong.

This crap even makes me wistful for the "why is there no premium content" posts.

Ryan constantly compared it to Steam and he's been wrong each time he's done that. Every time he did that he did a disservice to Steam and to the people who think that he's accurate about this. He may be entitled to have a shit opinion but I'm also entitled to point it out like others are.

All you're doing is complaining about our complaints. This was/is the biggest piece of news this year. For them to do the coverage they did, and basically not talk about it when it was rumored for weeks, is pathetic.

They certainly were completely indifferent, your strawman notwithstanding. I don't want them to be impartial, I want them to have common sense and understand that the viewers who let them have this cool job are not fucking cool with what Microsoft was doing. Besides the whole face Jeff makes which basically says: "Uh yeah this certainly is fucked, but fuck it, doesn't affect me!"
