Tools
greasemonkey (firefox)
yousabletubefix for firefox or chrome
avidemux
Jasc Animation Shop

Downloading
Step 1. Install greasemonkey (firefox)
Step 2. Install yousabletubefix for firefox or chrome
Step 3. Download video
Z2E86.png
note: there are hundreds of ways to download videos, this is just one way. Download Helper is another good extension for firefox.

Cutting/Exporting
Step 1. Open video in avidemux (if it asks you any questions at the start, just click yes)
Step 2. Cut out the portion of video you want to keep (Use red A/B markers to select what you wish to not keep, then hit delete)
21f9W.png
Step 3. File>Save>Save Selection as JPEG Images...(name the resulting file whatever you like). (Note: avidemux seems to mess up the colorspace of the outputted images, so beware. Hopefully they fix it.)

Gif'ing
Step 1. Start Jasc Animation Shop
Step 2. Start Animation Wizard
5jJPy.png
Step 3. Keep clicking "Next" until you get to the fourth screen and set the delay to (3/100), then continue to the image selection screen
Step 4. Add Image>Select All (CTRL+A)>Open
ou9KA.png
Step 5. Click "Next" then "Finish"
Step 6. Your animation will now open
tQqy1.png
Step 7. Cut out any frames you don't want to keep by selecting them and hitting delete
Step 8. Resize. Animation>Resize Animation. Always make sure "Maintain Aspect Ratio" is ticked. 320x180 is a good size for 16/9 (1.78) sources. 240x180 is a good size for 4/3 (1.33) sources.
PoWE1.png
Step 9. File>Save>Next. You can lessen the color depth here if your resulting file is too large.
Step 10. Done. Upload file to min.us or abload.de or tinypic.com
ie3YKQ.gif

(Optional) Optimization
Culling (Removing frames)
Step 1. Select all the frames (CTRL+A), Animation>Cull Animation, type "2", OK. (This will halve the amount of frames. We now need to correct the framerate so it plays at correct speed.)
Step 2. With all frames still selected, Animation>Frame Properties> type "6". (Note: Most online video is 30fps, hence the delay of 3, which you then double to get 6 (since you deleted half of the frames). Click OK. (You can also see the frame delay on the timeline)

Cropping
Select crop tool and select the area you want to keep. This is especially useful for getting rid of stray lines on the edges of videos

So how do you put in crazy subtitles and 'shops into your gifs? Thanks for this btw.

I tried to keep the tutorial pertaining to freeware, but TMPGEnc VMW is a nice program for easy subtitling. You can do it manually in Animation Shop by creating a transparent text file and dragging it onto an animation.

Wouldn't a delay of 7 centiseconds be better for a 15FPS animation (after culling half the frames)? A delay of 6 centiseconds means 15 frames take 0.9 seconds (10% error), while a delay of 7 makes 15 frames take 1.05 seconds (5% error).

So is this considered a more effective method than the Photoshop way of Import > "Video Frames to Layers" and then working on it or just an alternative?

maybe?

I used to use this exact same method. Instead of avidemux, I used virtualdub to make the video smaller before importing it to Jasc Animation Shop.

Now I use Photoshop CS5 for all of the steps except downloading the video. If I still need to make the video smaller, I'll use virtualdub to do it.

Does avidemux support FLV files?

I use PS CS5 exclusively for editing, but that's a great way if you're looking for a freeware methood.

My only problem with PS is that, aside from FLVs, it wouldn't read some of video files, due to codec's support, or lack thereof. I get a white screen 30% of the time.

Can anyone point towards a codec pack that would make PS read all video formats/codecs? I'm currently using CCCP.

Either way, good job with the OP.

it basically supports everything. It is prone to crash though when it doesn't like a file.
How prudish.

Only problem with the CS5 way is that, weirdly, it isn't supported in the 64bit version and it'll easily eat up to 4GB of RAM when working with larger files and then crash.

I use screen capture software, a conversion program to convert the .mov into a .gif, and gimp to modify everything. That way I'm not limited to just youtube videos.

Yeah, that too.

Neither am I. Less conversion is better. Use Download Helper or Replay Media Catcher to download stubborn files.

I use a similar method but Photoshop to compile the .JPEGS. The problem I have though is getting .gifs smaller than 3MB.

I'll like to point out that the two bottom gifs are close to half the file size as the top one (3.84 vs 2 megs)

I worry that people won't optimize their gifs, resulting in giant file sizes plastered all over this forum.

Came out a bit slower than I had hoped.

your delay should be 3/100. When doing the importing, make sure the delay is set to "3/100" on the fourth screen of the animation wizard. You can also change it by selecting all of the frames, Animation>Frame Properties, 3.

I've been lately using these freeware progs: Media Player Classic Home Cinema, IrfanView and GIF Construction Set Professional 4.

1. MPC: Frame by frame image saving and framerate checking.
2. IV: Renaming, cropping, brightness tuning etc.
3. CSP: GIF timing, resizing and dithering.

Time-consuming, yes, but I get a GIF out of everything exactly the way I want it.

Thanks for the tip on Jasc Animation Shop 3. Going to give it a try and see how it compares to CSP.

ah, I assumed default would be fine and skipped that part, thanks. So here is the updated version. Now the only problem is getting it smaller since obviously 5.9mb is too big. I lowered the quality in the optimization thing and it ended up looking like shit so I just left it as is for now, so yeah doing what you said above, looks good:

[updated version coming again]
How did you get your file size to 3.2mb?

there's something that has been bothering me ever since i got my new computer.

GIFs won't play when i check the images folder and look at each image individually. how do you make GIFs loop in windows 7?

Ah here we go, I changed the frame properties from 3 to 7 after the culling and all is well, about 3mb in size which looks good, feels good to know how to do this:
