Speaking of classical training, I think it'd be hilarious in between arias, if Sumi Jo turned to the cameras, did peace signs, head tilts, and cute puffed-out-cheek pouty faces.

A lot of parents enrol their kids into piano lessons in primary school so that they can be classical musicians in their late teens and early 20s...Perfectionism is sort of a goal in that musical field.

Not to mention kids are given tennis lessons and swimming lessons at a younger and younger age so that they can be pro-athletes before theyre even 20! How many top-seeds can say they started out in their sport from a passing interest in their late teens or post 20s.

Long-term plans like this is not limited to the kpop industry you know...

Er...this seems like normal things that parents have been doing for years. I wasn't signed up for little league in hopes of being in the MLB. I was given swimming lessons to...you know, know how to swim. I was made to take piano lessons as they thought I might like it and give me a skill. Boy, were they wrong.

Perhaps I should have said 'from childhood.' But I think there's a difference between the facade Lady Gaga puts on as opposed to acts like these. That's just my opinion though. Man. As an outsider looking in.
Yeah, well, you know... that's just, like, your opinion, man.

I do believe this conversation has reached its limits.

being an idol and a musician are two very very different things
musicians talent expands, while idols attractiveness declines
it would be interesting to see how they all rate on individual singing talent

I don't see any of that as comparable to the idol training they go through. Acting like they just learn to sing and dance is disingenuous.

And for those who eventually made a living out of it, who can say they made it without training hard for years...?

A lot of parents enrol their kids for training into the entertainment industry as well (acting, singing, dancing). A lot of them dont make it pass trainee level decide its not for them and leave.

How is training hard for the skills you need to make it in your industry creepy...?

One is developing a musical talent, another is creating an entire persona. I think they're different enough.

I agree with this.

I always think it's strange when K-Pop fans go on about how much training the girls receive and how much work they put in, like it's a unique concept. It really isn't.

Every pop act worth its salt logs the hours to get to where they are. TLC, En Vogue, Destiny's Child, Spice Girls - all of these groups have given interviews where they've talked about all the extensive training. The vocal coaching. The rehearsals for live performances. The lack of sleep and constant travel. The dieting. K-Pop groups don't get a cookie for this.

It gets a little creepy when you read about the girls being brought to these agencies for training at extremely young ages, put into groups that they oftentimes don't have any say in. The "alleged" starving. The being hooked up to IVs backstage between sets. The "alleged" isolation from their familes. It seems to go beyond just working hard to perfect their craft; these girls are literally treated like products. Robbed of their individuality to be perfect little idols. I think that's the difference.

So you can't take me higher?
kpop can

That said, I wonder if they actually like each other or secretly hate each other's guts. I guess we'll find out in a few years. I mean, the life cycle for these pop stars has to be pretty short.

To be fair, They've been huge in Korea for a while now. I remember some people in college going crazy over 'Gee' a few years ago, and I don't think they were new then either.

Having Korean parents, I started piano at a really young age of 3. I was in preparatory classes, and practiced for hours on end. You know those videos of North Korean kids that are smiling obnoxiously while playing some instrument? That was me, except there was plenty of food, no communism, and I was in Ohio. Come college decision time, I could've easily gone into music performance.

But despite that environment, this was still vastly different then Idol training where it's not just singing and dancing, but very deliberately molding of a personality to fit INTO the Idol status.

Yeah, it's pretty sad. But the world needed to hear "Gee."

I dunno. SMAP is still hugely popular in Japan, and they`re all 30 somethings / reaching 40.

SMAP isn't as popular as they use to be, only with the 30+ year old ladies now. It's all about Arashi. That's why they've hosting Kohaku Uta Gassen (extremely popular New Year's Program) for the last two years and not SMAP anymore.

FYI we all hate this aspect and talk about it all the time. It's not just a criticism of the kpop industry, but of Korean law to even allow it. Some idols have broken away and run off to China and Japan because of it, some have sued and won their cases, the related ministries of government are starting to have hearings to investigate it and talk to the idols themselves, many are speaking up and we are supportive of the artists association that tries to get shit done to fix it. It will take time.

My 2 cents:
I think there's a pretty significant difference between going to school to learn an art form and going to school specifically to become a celebrity. Idol training seems to have a lot more in common with pageantry training than music lessons. Again, the music/dance talent is important, but public image is the primary selling factor.

You would have been better off in North Korea.

Well it depends on the nature of your field. An Idol and athlete arent that different.

If an Idol's career is relatively short it would make sense they start learning younger isnt it? Though idols can and have moved into acting, TV hosting, and being a generally widely known media personality. Theres no way there are no more older media perosnalities still appearing on broadcast. lol

Its very similar to the sporting industry. No one can deny the younger you are, the better chances you have in continuing on in sports. Which also leads to parents and pressure issues for kids and teenagers when trying out for college teams etc.

It would be interesting to see how they all rate on individual singing talent

Taeyeon has had beautiful solo preformances that you could never realise just from their music videos.

Others have shown natural televison charisma that boost the ratings of shows when ever they appear on. When SNSD members appear or guest in a show. The broadcast is always better for it.

Do they really not have boyfriends, or is it a case of not wanting to upset fans and keeping their relationships under warps?

Impossible to tell - inasmuch as they or the entertainment company could be keeping it quiet.

Most of them don't. Many of them say they don't think that a relationship would work with the schedules they have to keep.

Some top idols (Goo Hara from KARA) do have boyfriends. Some of the male idols have had girlfriends. Fans do go crazy. The craziness if an SNSD member were to be in a relationship would be unprecedented and weird.

I think you are ignoring the fact that a lot of famous musicians become talented because they love music. Often they wont care about their image, and will be caught doing all kinds of drugs and sex acts. But that's what makes them interesting.

Im not sure you can say the same with girls that just decide that they want to be idols, and compete with huge amounts of other girls to get the part like an audition, so that they can sing factory line lyrics and dance routines. It does seem more like a job than a passion, and there needs to be a documentary of some kind so that i can actually find out.

see i find this to be cruel and bizarre

Gain is 25. Other members in Brown Eyed girls can relax for 5 more years. Kahi from After School? Still filled with young members, she can relax.

There are probably ways they could find to hook up with someone. They do go on holidays.

hah
airports and public transit are probably the easiest place to spot famous people
im pretty sure half of the western world recognizes them by now

Well statements like that have to be made on a case by case. Some old school rock gods picked up an instrument so that they could eventually get the chicks, the parties and the drugs.

Again case by case needs to be applied.

Whats the show for SNSD pre-debut? SNSD Goes to school...?

I havent full episodes myself but maybe the other more informed posters could suggest if its worth the watch to see if a group like Girls' Generation had their own passion to become a professional preformer...

thats kind of my point... they're imperfect and human

lol at "factory line . . . dance routines".

Based Rino deserves your respect.

They were taught routines by a professional, and dont do them half as well
that was also kind of my point?

Well, a hell of a lot of any industry is constituted by people who have been taught something by a master.

So what, basically.

just enough to look pretty, and sell a product

No.

They have rounded skills in singing, dancing, media presentation etc.

As a group they have specialties that compliment each other while individually they excel above other members in certain areas such singing, dancing, piano, acting, TV charisma etc.

Where's the clip of Seohyun playing the Piano for her unnie Taeyeon singing a solo...someon should link that.
