Gizmodo: Xbox Game Pass Is an Incredible Idea That Falls Flat (For Now)

I've noticed a lot of petty digs lately from representatives at larger sites. Destructoids Phantom Dust review started with two paragraphs bashing the Xbox itself lol

What the fuck I just looked that up lol

How can people take destructoid seriously after that?

As a Fable fan, Fable III is not a great game it's mediocre as they come. Fable TPC and II are great.

I remember calling Fable III one of the most polished unpolished games I've played, if that makes sense. Like you can see the ideas were there but they screwed up or poorly implemented them into the game.

Just looked at the list and its great! Obviously not for hardcore gamers who already buy a lot of games. But for newcomers who dont know what to buy, are you kidding me?!

Halo, Gears, Xcom, Sunset Overdrive, Bioshock, Braid, Lego, Mad Max, Banjo, Metal Slug, Megaman, OlliOlli, Resi0, Tekken Tag 2, VF5.

Not new games by any stretch. But i could happily play any of those again and have a good time. I think its a damn good start.

I agree that they need to upload more XB1 games to the service, but I've already played games worth a full year's subscription so right now I'm actually surprised at how great it is.

If you usually buy most games that gets released it might be difficult to see the value in this service, but many of us only play the biggest of the biggest AAA releases and ignores the rest.

I've found a few gems that I know I wouldn't have played otherwise.

Max and the Curse of Brotherhood for example. What a great game! :)

I'm replaying GOW1 for the first time right now too, in the Ultimate release, and I'm loving every second of it.

Installed Mad Max yesterday so I'll be digging into that later, heard good things about it.

All in all, for now I'm quite happy with the current games library. But yeah, if this game list stays untouched for too long I'll cancel the subscription. MS need to show that they're serious about it, can't mostly add some typical Xbox 360 sales bin games and think that we'll keep paying.

That's an apt description. The world is really well crafted, the levels have a ton of charm and atmosphere, but there's little incentive to explore as you buy the best things in town shops. The voice cast is amazing, probably among the best for a game, but the story fell short, especially the second half. The combat is very similar to II, but they somehow managed to make it less fluid and more clunky, II was fun, III you're fighting the sluggish mechanics. The Sanctuary UI is actually pretty cool, the Road to Rule part (leveling) was a horrid process. Fable has always been a series that didn't quite realize its potential, 1&2 were still good games, Fable III was likely rushed.

Its a nice idea to have this an option, but it depends. For me ive been an xbox owner for 7 months and most of the games i like ,i already bought on sale and own it (gears collection came from when i purchase gears 4) so its not for me atm. But its nice to have options.

I didn't sign up for EA Access for a while until it was better fleshed out. Problem right now for me is that I already own a lot of the games they're offering. I'll be interested in what this looks like in a year's time.

Definitely agree on all points. The second half of the game the story started going on fast forward and you had that big desert area that was huge just to be huge lol

News flash... Netflix is full of mostly shit movies and TV content but it has a few gems that make it worth it. I see Game Pass in a similar light. Also if you are a hardcore / avid gamer then likely you have bought most of the heavy hitters in GP like services.

Yeah, this article is kind of crap.

Seriously.

First of all I don't agree that the games are kind of crap. It's a great selection.

Second what the hell does the writer mean by it works and works damn well? It's just whitelisting games that you can download from normal XB store. Of course it's going to work well unless the writer is insinuating that the XB store downloads weren't working well previously?

Just sounds like the writer needed to submit his daily quota of words.

It can and will only get better from here. The service has only just launched.. That article is clickbait.

Game Pass is pretty much the same thing as EA Access for me, I'll subscribe for a month to play a specific game instead of buying it if its cheaper to do so and I really want to play a game thats on the service. Not really interested in maintaining such a subscription especially with a limited game list. If it was a significant amount of the consoles library that would make it definitely worth it for me, but all these companies are trying to walk a line of making it not worth it enough to stop buying new games because they want to maintain the current industry standards and just find new ways to steal your money on a monthly basis.

I think for $10 a month the list is reasonable. To people here and other gaming forums that complain about GWG titles or having bought/played most of them, I don't think (for now) you are the intended audience. This is for the people still using Red Box or looking around the bargain bin at Gamestop when bored.

For the "core" gamers I think it's nice for access to smaller arcade titles or some games that maybe you just want to check out. I did the 2 weeks free and played a lot of random little arcade games and checked out DMC Definitive Edition for the first time.

I always thought that having a "Netflix for games" would be a great idea, but thinking more about it, I've spent the last eight years collecting buying hundreds of games on the cheap for PC, Playstation, and Xbox and I've accumulated such a huge backlog that it would take me a long time to get through all the games I have, and somehow that backlog continues to increase. From looking at the current roster of games on Game Pass, it seems like a decent library to start, but the problem is I already own over half the games on the list thanks to cheap sales over the years, and the few titles that I do want to play and don't have on the list, I could probably buy them for less than $10 during a future sale or Humble Bundle or PS+/Xbox Live giveaway.

For people who haven't gotten into digital game collecting yet, this might be a great way to play a bunch of games for cheap, but it's going to take time for the list to grow. However, it might seem like we're going to have multiple publishers will offer their own renting services (like EA Access) that might make this proposition more expensive in the future, and most likely these games will not release on these services until at least a year after the game comes out. So for the time being, for people who just collect games on the cheap, you're better off continuing to do so, but for everyone else, it's going to take a while before many good games come out on these services.

I played DmC, the swapper (fucking awesome), Shantae, tried resident evil 0 and mad max, and now I installed darksiders 2 deathinitive edition.

Honestly it's a great start. Of course could be better, and I expect more games in the coming months that will make the service more attractive.

for a future free of service hell, i hope this fails and dies off. Its a bad precedent to set just like EA access.

MS and EA launch their own storefronts and lock people out of their games even on an open channel like PC just so they can have total control, they are definitely not the ones to be dictating future trends for what people may for IMO

If one entity starts it, it could be the next online subscription where you pay for online because someone at MS saw that they could con a bunch of suckers and everyone else follows along

I am not a fan at all of multiple subscriptions on a single storefront that already requires a basic subscription for basic services

This is the wrong mindset IMO. As long as it's an option in addition to the typical model of having to buy every game. I'm all for it.

Haha! It's funny. People have been saying they hope it fails since 2014. I wonder how long they're going to keep saying it while it continues to be a success.

Also, while MS makes it difficult with their own platform on PC, a company is going to do what it needs to do to make money. It's funny, MS has been pushing their brand on PC (on their own terms). It would be nice if another company (take a guess) would open up their brand to PC.

Arguments like this fall flat when I see things like "MS saw that they could con a bunch of suckers".

Okay lol

The article fell flat on its face within the first sentence.

Yup. While I agree that the offerings on Xbox Game Pass are less than stellar, the fact that MS is offering a Netflix style service for games could be game changing, moreover it could portend of things to come in the future for MS and the gaming industry as a whole.

Yeah, less options for consumers is always a good call.

It used to cost you nearly $10 to rent one game for three days from a video store. Now we supposed to be less than enthused about 100 games for $10 a month.

It's a great value RIGHT NOW, and will only get better.

Now excuse me, I have a cloud to go yell at.
But you rented that new game, not a 100 old ones you don't care about.

For a lot of hardcore gamers I think Game Pass just isn't going to appeal to them. You play the games you want on release and move onto the next. Kind of like really being into movies. A movie subscription service doesn't appeal that much if you watch and own most of the movies you want to experience close to the day they come out.

Game Pass excels really well at being a great service for mid to casual gamers much like how EA Access appeals really well to people who don't usually buy EA games.

But I do believe one day we'll see a game like Sea of Thieves come out exclusively for Game Pass. A game that adds value to the subscription overtime and encourages staying subscribed.

It's an option, no one is forcing you to subscribe. And this does not require any other subscription.

Close minded like you is what's wrong with this community.

Just because something doesn't appeal to you so you wanted it to fail?

First Netflix for games? Wasn't that game reactor? Hell, if anything psnow is more Netflix like, including the poor video compression.

Not sure I get how its a bad deal? For the price of two full priced games in a year you get an instant library with a ton of great games in it. Seems awesome to me.

Prediction considering they got the S down to $299 last holiday with new games. I could absolutely see them doing a $199 500GB console with only Xbox Game Pass included and not any of the new releases for the holidays as a cheap way into the ecosystem.
I mostly agree. I think we are going to continue to see the cheapest bundle come with Minecraft, but Games Pass for 1-3 months will also be included. $199 Xbox One S with Minecraft and a month of Game Pass is mass market gold.

If you want to try out a lot of solid titles, it's a really good option. Especially, with the added discounts on these older games and their DLC, this isn't necessarily aimed at those with the voracious appetite of a player who often buys the AAA on day one. I mean, there's a healthy range between the person who is the 'AAA or bust' type and those that buy a couple of games a year. It's effectively a budget rental service with benefits for purchasing its content and that's pretty cool in a time when rental service choices are scarce and the ones out there do not cover digital-only titles that are now the majority of titles released. It can easily become better as more titles are added, so that article seems to want to rush to judgment at this early stage.

By some of the reactions on this thread, you would think the author said Game Pass is a piece of crap and should have never been offered.

I read it as the author says the service is not very good because the lack of good games, which is subjective obviously. The online check in part I can't comment on. So I don't think she is saying the service should have never been offered.

But in the end, the article is dumb because the service is brand new and as with most brand new online services, we need more time to properly judge it.

Top tier games for 10? Lmao!
A new game is 60.

Expecting a Netlix like top tier gaming service is not really realistic imo.
Atleast not yet

If Microsoft releases alot of top tier games instantly they will lose money on the service.

Between this, EA Access and GWG i literally have hundreds of Xbone games ready to install at any moment. Its incredible really. The shit talkers don't know what they are asking for, same as that one friend still clinging to DVD's/Blu Ray.

But you rented that new game, not a 100 old ones you don't care about.
If you dont care about those 100, dont rent, i used to rent a bunch of old games from blockbuster because they were cheaper and you had them for more days.

Seems to me like a poorly written opinion piece that contradicts itself every other sentence. The title and the last paragraph contradict each other too.

Xbox Game Pass Is an Incredible Idea That Falls Flat (For Now)
most of the games are kind of crap.
Yes, there are outliers.
But those titles, primarily made for the Xbox 360 or earlier consoles, are pretty dang ugly looking now (?) days.
They’re still a lot of fun
I didn’t mind that there wasn’t a 2017 AAA title for me to play
Xbox Game Pass could be a real boon. You’d be hard pressed to ever have access to as many games for as low a price.

It's like a stream of consciousness with no real point.

That said, I don't think I'd be buying into this on the PS4 if there was a similar thing. I have more games than I have time to play them as is. My backlog is horrendous.
