Glasses are ludicrously expensive. Why.

what?
I have no control over the word usage by popular media. Hipster is a thing, there are people that look hipster, they are pretty easy to spot, they are the ones that look different from the rest of us, but don't look like goths or metal heads or punk rockers or hill billies or bikers or rednecks.

Hence why I hesitated in getting new glasses. So all I need now is get an eye exam, and grab some glasses on-line at the fraction of the cost? God damn getting that exam asap. Now I don't think I have it astigmatism, but if I do. Will the option of getting online glasses go out the window?

No, though I have little experience with extreme astigmatism.

You just enter it from your prescription - in my case it's -0.50 cyl,, axis 105 for my right eye. My wife has a similar one for her left.

I'd imagine, as with actual prescription strength, there's a limit to what a particular lens can be adjusted to compensate for.

Awesome, already made an appt to see my eye doctor this Friday. Figure if I can drop some cash on ps4 and an xbox, I should drop some cash on some new glasses too :P

How much did it cost? Did it hurt? I heard they cut a slit in your eyeball or something crazy like that. I couldn't deal with that although I do want better eyesight later down the line.

shit was expensive...around $3,000. you can find it cheaper, but i felt better going to a more reputable guy which obv costs a little more. the process itself doesn't 'hurt', they give you valium or something to calm down and put numbers in your eyes. honestly, i'd describe the process akin to being abducted by aliens. no joke, that's the closest thing i can compare it to. you're strapped down with a little plastic thing holding your eye open, you get numbing agents in your eyes, and i think they slit a little hole in your eye then you move over to a laser machine, have to stare at a little dot with your vision all cloudy, nothing really hurts it's just, 'awkward feeling', i'd describe it as. it takes like 10 minutes total.

funny part is, immediately after i could see perfectly, and felt great. 15 minutes later in the car, my eyes sting like i squeezed lemons in them lol, all you can really do is sleep it off, since it's physically hard to keep your eyes open for 12 - 18 hours after it's done. kind of felt like eyes were sort of burning and you were just physically tearing up that whole time, it was not pleasant at all for me.

but after a day you're ok, my eyes just dried out a lot over the next 2 or so months, have to use eye drops every hour or two in that time span, doesn't hurt eyes just get dry really often. after that's done with though i felt like a goddamn cyborg, fixed by science to have better than 20/20 vision, coming from not being able to see read my laptop from 2 feet away, life changer

funny thing tho, when i went in for my consoltation they put the numbing agent in your eyes to check them out; when they did that, my vision went blank for like 7 minutes lol, i was sitting in the waiting room then 'shit, i can't see anything lol, help!'. went back to normal after a few minutes but it freaked me out, bc i think if that happened when i went in for my surgery things would have been awful. but i reacted normally to the numbing stuff when it mattered, they said that reaction wasn't a big deal and it was right, made me nervous about the surgery though at the time

No, every online vendor I've checked has the sphere, cylinder, and axis options. Just make sure you get your PD (pupillary distance). Contacts are where astigmatics get fucked.

edit: beaten for not hitting refresh - but the PD is still important, yo!

I need to go get my eyes checked. Last time the optometrist said my eyes would be good for eye surgery once some veins recessed in my eyes.

I've worn contacts since middle school. one day I wake up and have what feels like pink eye. Red irritated eye of awfulness. Apparently my eyes might have rejected the contacts. I've worn glasses since. I got my eyes checked like a year or two ago and apparently having the contacts on made the veins or something in my eye try and get closer to the surface to get oxygen. If they did surgery while they were present the laser could hit the vein and cause my whole eye just to fill with blood. I would be blind.

Plus I stare at bright computer screens in a poorly lit environment for 12+ hours. I don't know if I could deal with the dry eyes or irritation from eye surgery.

after the 2 month period from surgery my eyes have felt fine, i don't use eye drops regularly or have any more irritation than i had before after that little period ends. i too stare at the damn computer for work all day, and although i know it's doing me no favors in that it's probably eventually going to be contributing to my vision getting poorer way down the line, on a day to day basis its not a concern.

I think eye surgery will be too big of a risk..

It could be that the contacts were not clean enough. I used to have issues where occasionally they would irritate me. It went away when I switched from the no-rub solution where you soak them to the OptiCare solution where you put the lens in this solution that bubbles away. The contacts are much cleaner. The drawback is that you have to let it work for 8 hours or overnight. If you try to put them in too soon, you'll "burn" your eyes.

The other thing they do nowadays is to give you disposable lenses so you change them every 2 weeks. I'm guilty of stretching out my lenses to use them for 2-3 months and haven't had issues. If you're going to wear them longer, then you should clean them with enzymatic tables to get the buildup off.

How long ago was it that you wore contacts? Maybe with the newer technologies, you could wear them again?

Does your state not have any decent insurances for vision? I paid like $25 for a month here and ended up getting a pair of ray-ban prescription sunglasses, pair of normal ray-ban glasses, exam and lenses for under $250 which was the cost of the sunglasses alone without the insurance. (this also includes scratch proof and some anti-glare coat which i am still not sure is a real thing or if they just wanted more money)

And you can drop the insurance at any time, you just needed to have it for 1 month before it went active. I ended up keeping the insurance because i am going to get a backup pair later this month but then i am dropping it. Did the same with Dental when i needed a root canal.

Or you can buy a pair of glasses from Coastal or Zennioptical for $30 shipped.

So glad I found this thread. Once I get a new prescription I'm gonna order a pair from Zennioptical. I'm surprised that they actually have metal frames in the shape I'm looking for since I can rarely ever find it. Does anyone know if Zennioptical offers anti-glare?

Frames and some places charge you differently for each lens.

Mine are expensive even when I get them online because I have to pay through the nose for thin lenses. They tend to be cheaper for people with less severe eyesight issues (mine are in the -7's)

America's best

70 bucks

Includes eye exam

Includes 2 pairs of glasses

Can't be beat

This is where I got my most recent eye exam done. $50 for the exam is still cheap.

If you have decent eyes, this is a good deal. If you have horrible eyes though and need to get lighter lens, you have to pay way too much. Plus their selection of cheap frames aren't that good.

What Aiustis said. I have -5ish lens, so those thin lenses costs quite a bit.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can always try the eBay + 39dollarglasses.com route. They offer a service where you mail them a frame and they'll put lenses in them for you.

After I get a new prescription in January, I'm going to try this route. There's a HUGE variety of frames on eBay and tons of unique vintage frames.

Don't have my PD measurement. Doc didn't write it down on my scrip. I'd love to give WP a shot but apparently the try on program isn't available in Canada so it'd be a shot in the dark. I don't know the quality of the frames or lens. I have a high prescription.

You can measure your PD yourself fairly easily using a mirror and a ruler. My prescription didn't have a PD either, so I had to measure them myself. I used the measurement and my prescription to buy a pair from Zenni Optical last year. I'm still wearing them now and they're just about the best glasses I've ever owned.

Damn, Mumei I thought my -1.50/-2.00 footballs were pretty bad. I thought the optometrist was full of shit when he said it's not a big deal when I can barely read stuff five feet away. I can only imagine how you see people without glasses on

I got a new pair a couple of weeks ago. The total comes to $530 something, but only paid $112 thanks to the insurance plan. Came with a pair of free shades with the same grade as my new one. They were having a sale at the time I think

After shopping around today, I decided to grab some glasses from Pearle Vision. They were offering a two-for-one deal, so I got a pair of specs and a pair of RX shades for $540. Luckily, they'll be covered by my school's insurance plan.

I may take a shot with a WP cheaper frame next month as a pair of back up glasses. Definitely want those Ames sunglasses though.

So, my lenses after visiting several places, I got the following cost options: $200, $250, $300, $350, and $360. PV offered $390, but it was two pairs of glasses or glasses + RX sunglasses, so that worked out to $195 for the lens, and whatever the frames were on top. I think I'm satisfied with this deal considering my last pair of glasses that I bought in Canada was $650 four years ago.

I don't even wear eyeglasses, I don't know what I'm doing here :D

Glasses almost expensive as a P$4?? Damn it!!!

My glasses through Zenni Optical cost $49.99 with scratch coating. They're pretty functional, nice glasses. The cost is driven by the fact that the places making your glasses have to pay the wages of doctors and other staff. There are no legal barriers in place from third parties manufacturing glasses on the cheap, in China.

If you don't mind waiting around two weeks, discount online retailers are the way to go. With my health insurance copay, my glasses cost $60.42 and I do not have any type of vision insurance. Just make sure you ask that the doctor give you a printout of the vision findings (including Pupillary Distance).

I believe glasses are eligible, so you should be able to use that amount. You won't be able to claim them, though, assuming that $300 is just a direct payout to you in lieu of benefits or something.
Thanks for answering DJ, I'll be using that 300 for new pair of frames. And that's Guy for creating this thread, comes at a good time while I'm on the market for a pair of glasses.

Buy them online.

I'll never look back. $300 for a pair of basic glasses in store, $700-$800 if I want Transitions or something and choose a fancy designer frame.

I currently have four pairs of glasses and they cost less than $150, total. My latest ones were an $11 experiment, and I've actually been wearing them more than the other because of how light (and cheap) the frames are. It's like I'm wearing nothing at all.

My purchases have been from Clearly Contacts (they're Canadian though). and Glasses Shop. The latter is your typical barebones Chinese manufacturer and my purchase from them was an experiment, but I'll probably order from them again for at home or glasses I'm not worried about breaking.

How does this work? Cause I have pretty shitty eyes. How would I go about finding the right prescription?

I spent $30 on glasses from one of those discount sites that pop up on slickdeals. Not super clear, but I've been using them for a few years.
