Glasses are ludicrously expensive. Why.

Interesting. Both the monopoly thing and the alternatives.

Hey, someone almost as blind as me. I am -9.25 / -9.75

Fixed!

I second Costco.

Has anyone had any luck rubbing off the glare reducing coating garbage they put on high index plastic lenses? The shit always bubbles up after a few months and my otherwise fine glasses are filled with micro bubbles.

ponying up for laser eye surgery was the best thing i ever did. glasses/contacts add up to cost more than that amount in the long run, and they such an annoying inconvenience in so many ways. i highly recommend anyone who's under 30 to look into it if you have the means (provided your eyesight is horrible, as mine was).

Holy crap.

To those of you with 8 or higher prescriptions - what exactly can you see with your glasses off? Mine's only -2.5 and I feel relatively blind if I have to read anything, but I can still see enough to wander around.

I'm imagining the prescriptions close to 10 just being one massive, blurry mess.

It's awful. Just blurs and streaks of colour.

Would those online stores be able to do rimless glasses? I have a pair of glasses from Lenscrafters and they're super light and no rims, meaning the lenses are held together with the bridge and sides.

That's not an option for online glasses is it? :(

Though, maybe Costco?

As I said, mine isn't close to that, it's about -5, but without my glasses I can't read the word "believe" under the NeoGAF logo on the new reply page here and the text I'm typing looks blurred. I can read the keyboard to type this though, but not perfectly.

I don't think I've ever paid more than €100,- for a completely new pair of glasses.

Yep, even with designer frames and 4.7 prescriptions (getting the glass thing so I dont look like a clown and all that). There is a store where you can get for 1 more euro the same pair of glasses.

Maybe its an american thing?

The parasitic relationship between optometrists and opticians is well-known to me. Want a new pair of glasses? Good luck getting prescription lenses without spending another $50-$100 on an eye exam you don't really need. Your prescription can be 2 years old and they'll refuse to release it for your "privacy".

Is there any way around this? I'm in the same boat right now. Need new contacts, but I don't want to pay 100 dollars for them to tell me my prescription hasn't changed. It's insane. How is this legal???

I'm 6-6.5 and everything past 3 inches is a blur. It sucks.

I think optometrists are part of a criminal racket. My lenses alone would cost $320 with the frames on top of that at least $200 for a decent one. Ugh that is just crazy for a man on the cusp of graduation.

That's gotta be eye exam included.
Personally, my place I can get a new pair for $69, with eye exam $129.
That's not even the cheapest route, either. I could reuse my frames, and go with the basic lenses and drop that to $40 even. You need to shop around more.

I got tired of spending an absurd amount of money every year to address what is essentially a disability. I started to suspect that the prices were far higher than they should be and that perhaps companies were taking advantage of the fact people can't function without eyeglasses or contacts and therefore were charging far more than they had to. So I went and got laser eye surgery. One if the best decisions I've ever made.

I already paid $90 bucks for the eye exam before the other costs.

I cannot even see the word "believe" if I take my glasses off and sit at my normal distance from the screen. I can read "N??GAF", barely, but I have to really squint to make out the "eo" part.

holly crap.

At that point I would get the operation, no amount of glasses is going to definitely improve your vision. I'm "just" 5/6, and thankfully it stabilized there, but everyone I know can't stand my glasses for more than a few seconds.

I have 20/20 vision with glasses, though it is weird how my eyes have basically trained themselves over the years to avoid the "blind spots" around the perimeter of the lenses. And I'd like to get some sort of eye surgery someday, but I am leery about side effects / possible problems.

I can never get mine online because I always lose my damn prescription. I just had it sent to me when I got these new glasses, but once again have no idea where I put it!

I paid US$70 online for my pair of rimless frames, not a well-known brand name but well made. They look great.

Only that inexpensive as I bought them at wholesale price from a distributor. The lenses were a bit more, although I opted for the less expensive optics.

I got a free eye test and two pairs of glasses for £89 with stylish frames and prescription lenses.

Went to specsavers, didn't feel robbed.

You resisted saying "Should have gone to Specsavers"? Man....

Specsavers are decent. £120 last time got me toughened anti-glare normal glasses with toughened polarised sunglasses. For something I use every day that allows me to see I'm not too cut up at the idea of spending that.

Add in the fact I get free eye tests because I work past a certain amount of hours each week with computers and it's fine.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned www.glassesshop.com yet.

I bought two pairs from here for about $60. Both are comfortable, but one pair the lenses are smaller than I thought they'd be. There's always some kind of coupon code you can use too.

Planing on getting new glasses in the new year thanks to some fine scratches and this is most helpful because fuck paying 300 to 400 USD on these things.

I think it's because Luxottica Group S.p.A owns like everyting in the eyewear business.

I have a pair of nice Ray Ban frames where the logo somehow fell out of the frame on the side. I contacted Luxottica support asking for a logo to put into my frame. They were nice enough to send me 4 instead of just one.

Still, I agree that the glasses are expensive. I think I paid around $400 for mine, even with the discounts. I will be trying Warby Parker in 2014 once I can use the new Flexible Spending money because 2013's account is used up.

I fucking hate astigmatism. Glasses are expensive, contacts are expensive, fuck my eyes.

that's exactly why i got lasik lol. i don't know if it was just because i had an astigmatism or what, but contacts were irritating as fuck. i'd feel like i'd been awake for 20 hours when i'd only had them in for 5 or 6 hours, they just always irritated my eyes (i still put up with them for years because glasses are annoying in other ways), even those 'acuvue for astigmatism' ones (which are expensive as shit)

Another vote for online shopping.

I have around -8 / -8. Glasses cost me around € 300 - € 500 in stores. Got a pair online for € 35, perfectly happy with it.

Every doctor I've talked to about this tells me to wait until age 40 since that's about when your eyes will stop adjusting. Otherwise you'll just end up needing glasses again in a few years.

I have a rather nasty astigmatism so even if I got laser surgery I'd still need glasses. It sucks. I'll still probably go through with it one day though be ause I can't even read like a computer screen 2 feet away from my face anymore without my glasses.

yeah, most people's eyes will get a little worse at 40. most likely though, that won't be anywhere near as bad as my vision was before; that usually just pertains to needing reading glasses at an older age, as most people who grow up with fine vision end up needing. mine was similar to yours, astigmatism, and i couldn't read anything more than a few inches away. it sucked, and getting lasik was worth it to me because i didn't want to live another 15 years with that till i was in my 40s. i play a lot of sports and workout alot and glasses/contacts irritate me moreso when i'm sweating.

if i need reading glasses when i'm an old man then so be it. one day i had a contact fall out when i was driving and driving home with one eye just put me over the edge on dealing with bad vision. always keep a spare set of glasses in your car if you wear contacts, everybody!

Somewhat OT but I sometimes wonder why bad eyesight is so prevalent in humans as a species. Not sure how accurate but I think I remember hearing something like 68% of people having bad eyesight. Surely that's an anomaly compared to other animals.

Blame our modern way of living. Humans are hunters meant to live on plains and jungles, staring off into the distance in search of prey. Our sharp eyesight was never meant for glaring at books and screens from a short distance and for hours at a time. You could probably fuck up an eagle's perfect eyes by putting it through a regular regiment of what we do everyday.

Wearing my new pair of glasses that I just picked up last night. The price of frames was much higher than expected (especially compared to what I paid for my first pair in early 2009), but initially didn't mind. I was supporting a local independent store with great reviews and the service was excellent. But seeing the price after all was said and done prompted me to do some homework after the fact. Now knowing about sites like Zenni and Warby, I'm not sure I can justify doing it again.

In the future, I'll likely go back just for the exam and hope they're still kind when I ask for measurements and take my glasses shopping online. An optometrist is a doctor after all. No doctor should get mad that you're not buying drugs and medical gear directly from her. It's actually kinda shady how some support their practice by selling accessories and place more emphasis on it.

How much did it cost? Did it hurt? I heard they cut a slit in your eyeball or something crazy like that. I couldn't deal with that although I do want better eyesight later down the line.

So what what are the best sites to order to europe (Finland)?

I really need new glasses and was at a free eye-exam couple of weeks ago. I really didn't want to spend so much at the storeprices, so I could do a test from one site if the postage isn't over much. Chinese sites and the like are an option too.

My mom works for an optometrist (optical technician + billing + limited IT. Woefully underpaid) and they mark up their shit @ 250% of cost. That's one reason glasses can be ridiculously expensive at various places.

Well damn this thread is literally an eye opener. I need new glasses desperately. I been using these one for the past 5 years or so. They are so run down, its silly. But they at the time cost me a good 500 dollars. That is with insurance that covered 250. Complete bullshit!

Hence why I hesitated in getting new glasses. So all I need now is get an eye exam, and grab some glasses on-line at the fraction of the cost? God damn getting that exam asap. Now I don't think I have it astigmatism, but if I do. Will the option of getting online glasses go out the window?
