God of War Ascension demo impressions

Anyone know if the kill animations for enemies are still basically designed fully for the blades chaos? It always irked me that Kratos would just jerk into those when I had another weapon out, and it would honestly make me use the other weapon types more if they had their own unique finishers.

Only weapon is the blades of chaos, so that does not matter really.

I'm gonna guess that the temporary weapons don't have finishers, and the rest of your arsenal is just the blades with different elemental modifiers, which I doubt will affect the finishers. I could be wrong, but I'd be surprised if there were unique finishers for anything.

Yeah, picked up weapons are only used with the
PlayStationCircle.svg
button. So any detailed killing animation is being handled with your main weapons.

I wonder if the soul element is going to work like the Claws of Hades?

I'm going to be pretty bummed if any of the elements (besides fire, which we already know was lifted directly from Ghost of Sparta) are just slight modifications of weapons we've seen before. I don't actually know what kind alternate chain blade type attacks/abilities would be interesting to me; I just want to be genuinely surprised.

Those huge, red, glowing symbols on top of enemies' head are apparently an improvement over the spinning circle button of previous games. :P Platinum Games frankly bested them at their own thing. But they do have these "dodging" mini-games now.
They should have kept the giant circles.

Even though I'm a huge fan of God Of War, I truly wish they would refresh the series. I've had enough of Kratos and the Greek mythology. His story finished with God Of War 3 to be honest.

I trust SSM to deliver a fantastic game though - I am yet to be disappointed by a GOW title, but I'll be annoyed if I see Kratos on the PS4. :P

We know the elements tides into everything including the rage meter and magic.

I am not sure what to except.

Here:
“We wanted to focus everything around the blades in this game, and so we have these elements that are infused in the blades and actually switch the way that you play,” he commented. “So, for example, the fire blades that you saw at E3, those will stun enemies faster. So you can get that and pop that grenade into them with L3 and R3, stun ‘em and then from there you can weaponize them.

Papy also mentioned ice and electric elements, and he said the point of including these is to give players more freedom in their approach to combat. “We wanted to change the way that you enter into a level or into a fight. Basically think about ‘How do I want to dismantle this? How do I want to take it down?’”

Man I love the combat in this game!

seriously upercutting and sending enemies flying is so satisfying and it never gets old!

Why am I the only one mentioning this? lol

Not sure this is the right place for this, but as it is the most recent and active GoW thread...

Long ago I bought GoW for the PS2. Played it a bit but for whatever reason didn't finish it. I doubt I played more than 20%. I later picked up GoW:Origins Collection for PS3 cheap but haven't played it yet. I'm really itching to get into the series now. Do I need to start with GoW? Can I instead play the two Origins games and, if I really like them, buy the Saga (to get GoW PS3 as well as GoW2 and GoW3)? Will I miss any story or have the experience diminished by playing out of order? Or do I take a leap of faith and play in chronological order by starting with Ascension in a few weeks?

(Though, I guess, if I played the two Origins then the three core games then Ascension eventually I'd be playing them in order of improving technology. =))

BTW I thought this game ripped off dante's inferno. bugs coming out of that lady's tits? tsk tsk please apologize to EA

I'll never get sick of Kratos and Greek mythology. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I am Greek and I may be biased here lol

I understand I am in the minority on GAF as 90% of the people here want a reboot and a new character, So my opinion will go on deaf ears :(

Wouldn't be god of war without Kratos.

The origins games comes first anyone way so you are good.

Ascension comes before all the GOW games.

1.God of War Ascension
2.God of War Chains of Olympus
3.God of War Ghost of Sparta
4.God of War
5.God of War 2
6.God of War 3

I liked the demo and can't wait to play the full game. I did like GOW3 more though. Something was wrong with the sound in the demo. I couldn't put my finger on it. Whether it was the music sounding really low or the sound of the chains being off. I'm not sure what is was.

Even if kratos tackles other mythologies, that would actually be pretty cool now that I think about it.

Just keep Kratos lol

You're Greek? I never would have guessed with you mentioning it every second post

Yeah, I was completely shocked to see this game. It's like already having next-gen graphics (little do I know what to expect though) a true next-gen god of war will be like drinking Ambrosia.

Man didn't think they could top GoWIII graphically on the PS3 but they did it. Anyone know if this is running at 60 or 30 fps?

Muuuuch closer to 30. You can feel the sluggishness of Kratos' movement compared to the past games, although it's slight and not nearly as bad as say..Ninja Gaiden Sigma on Vita (60fps game running at 30).

I wouldn't go THAT far, it looks pretty nice though.

Well that's what I'm saying. My immediate thoughts were how this felt like a sneak peak, I just have no clue what I'm in for.

The whole demo looked surreal with the attention to detail and animation.

Best IQ I've ever seen.

Three things Todd if you see this...

-Boat Captain has some sort of cameo in this right?

-In previous GOW's you were able to play around in the bonus arena and set up whichever enemies you want, and set health etc I think it would be cool if this were expanded and players were able to set their own challenge rooms for other people to complete online. There could be a leaderboard based on time completion/ red orbs generated/ highest combo whatever. Enemy waves/scenarios and available abilities health etc would be completely up to the author. Author would have to complete the level before uploading.

Think that would be a great idea in the future.

-Don't wimp out on the trophies. Make them finish on hardest for that platinum, or at least have some kind of bonus for completing on hardest. All other GOW's only make them finish on hard.

GOW is my favourite franchise, thanks to the team at SSM for making such a kick arse franchise. Fuck the haters.

Dude, no. I don't want to have to beat the game on Chaos mode to get a plat!

I tried the demo today and was sorely disappointed. First, I had no idea this was going to be a prequel, and I loathe them. Second, the game mechanics feel so dated.

I have this preordered and will most likely still pick it up, but I hope this was just a bad impression and the game delivers.

What is innately wrong with a prequel? A prequel is far more interesting than a sequel to GoW3 after it's conclusion.

I feel like Norse mythology would be an amazing way to reinvigorate the series and I would want to see SSM's unique take on that mythology. Give me what Dyack couldn't! =P

Have this demo downloading as I type this. Last I saw there was about 90 minutes left but I'm tired as hell since I got out of work late.

But I really like the GOW games and I want to try this demo. I've managed to steer clear of many videos for this game and haven't been following the development too much. All I remember seeing recently was a dev diary of a winged creature which Kratos fights.

I absolutely loathed the sections of the demo where the camera zoomed out so far that Kratos was an ant. It didn't make the environments feel more epic, it just made me feel like I was playing as Kratos wearing the Minish Cap lol...and it negatively impacted the gameplay too. Shouldn't be Where's Waldo in my GOW battles.

Prequel stories just don't have the same impact for me, since I have a knowledge of what occurs in the future (or how is the state of affairs in the future, which tells me of what took place in the past).

Graphics and visual presentation were top notch and very impressive, but i really hope there'll be more to the combat XO. This demo didn't do it for me as far as gameplay goes sad to say =/

Ya, I think at this point they are looking to start that fresh for next-gen.

Wow this game is gorgeous. Great lighting and motion blur effects.

Got me hyped for the retail release.

The blur is truly surreal. I don't think I have ever seen it implement as well.

I think I am also suffering from God of War fatigue. The game is visually solid, which is what I expect from a God of War game. But I didn't particularly feel excited about anything else.

Sigh. I think I finally have GoW fatigue. I really struggled to maintain interest in finishing the demo.

I'm really not expecting much more from this game gameplay wise. To me it looks, audiovisully, like the epitome of the series in this current generation. But not much more outside of that. Hopefully I won't get bored of it because of that, but we'll see.

I'd rather them start a brand new IP based upon some core pillars of the God of War franchise (namely, combat and brutality).

I've always wanted God of War to be a more open world experience. My dream game would be a title with God of War's combat mixed with Zelda's overworld, dungeons, and puzzle design.

I think next-gen is the perfect opportunity for them to explore something like that, given the power they will be working with.

Also, open world single player titles tend to sell significantly better. Just look at Skyrim's insane sales.

Prequel stories just don't have the same impact for me, since I have a knowledge of what occurs in the future (or how is the state of affairs in the future, which tells me of what took place in the past).

I know what happens to Big Boss before I even started playing MGS3, but that didn't keep it from being my favorite MGS game. Prequels tend to try and tell their own story, separate from the other games/movies.

I still dont get how people think this looks better than GOW3.

Massive upgrade graphically in my opinion

textures, geometry, shading, and huge improvement in lighting

I think as good as gow 3 looks, it kind of falls flat in comparison.

The hate I am reading here is just crazy. The combat system is incredible...

each to their own I guess..

Can you explain how you think it looks worse? Pound for pound it's big upgrade in like for like comparisons.

So yeah. About the only worse element seems to be more sub pixel aliasing that comes with the better everything else.
