Yeah, you're wrong.
Gears of War is "Gears"
God of War is "GOW" or "GoW" if you're the anal type.

God of War's release predates Gears by a year and a half and was being being called GOW for a lot longer. It's like using FF as an abbreviation for anything other than Final Fantasy.
