God of War, Shadow of the Colossus

Ok fellow gamers, I want to buy a new game, but I'm only going to buy one. I've narrowed it down to God of War and Shadow of the Colossus.

I hear sotc is a different kind of game, unique in its pacing and level layout, etc. but that can also be a turnoff. And I've heard that GoW, while repetetive, is still just plain fun. But people say that all the time.

So let's settle it! If you were going to buy God of War OR Shadow of the Colossus, which ones would you get and why?

I'm not concerned if one is cheaper than the other, only which one is the better game because of the game itself.

God of War (but only cause it's 20). Can't go wrong with either.

Shadow of the Colossus. Because it's utterly unique and deserves to be played by everyone at least once, and also has the one of the best endings in videogame history.

Ugh, how bad is it :\

"Atrocious" is the word that sums up Shadow of the Colossus framerate best! I don't want to say that the game is unplayable because of it... i mean, it's still most definitely worth going through for how original it is.

God of War has a mostly awesome framerate and of course is badass all by itself.

I was looking at God of War for some reference material last night....

Yeah. That game still gives me goosebumps from the opening cinematic. I love that game so much.

I love both of these games. It's hard to choose between them at all...agh. God of War probably offers a better gameplay experience, but I love the style of SotC sooooo much more.

And honestly, they are both flawed. Yes, SotC has framerate issues, but God of War has some of the worst "platforming" sections ever, so...ung.

God of War is cheaper, you say? Okay, get that one.

I've played through Colossus multiple times, and while there are framerate issues, it does not make the game unplayable whatsoever. The visuals are so nice in the game, and the world is so huge, that the framerate issues are worth it... in my opinion at least. When I'm playing, I'm so drawn into the world that when the framerate slows down, I just don't really care. Skipping this game because of this issue is a big mistake.

ZOE2 is a thousand times better than ZOE.

This is an accurate statement.

I honestly say with no hesitation that Himuro is factually wrong and is also probably partially blind. I don't want to be mean but that is the only logical explanation, other than some super PS2 that they sell on dark corners.

The more I think about it, the more I think you should get Shadow of the Colossus.

I'll probably get flamed for this comparison but...did you play Devil May Cry and Ico? If you liked DMC more, get God of War. If you liked Ico more, get SotC.

Buy God of War, rent SotC. Both are worth playing, but I couldn't imagine beating Shadow twice. I've already beaten GoW twice, and played the hell out of the minigame challenges.

But ICO is nothing like SOTC.

You're right but I couldn't think of any game that is quite like SotC and that wasn't really the point of the comparison. What I'm saying is someone who enjoyed Ico more than DMC will probably enjoy SotC more than God of War.

I really don't like DMC. DMC1 was ok, DMC2 was a disaster, DMC3 is more like DMC1 but I wasn't that impressed.

If you pass on SOTC because of the apparent frame rate issues you're a ****ing retard pure and simple, and that goes for anyone. You might as stop playing video games all together.

hey, i'm not telling him to pass on it - but he should be aware. Framerate issues THIS bad are a very real issue for many gamers, and it can rightfully turn them away.

Shadow of the Colossus is still a GREAT game. But it has that big ****ing pimple blemishing its face, and there's no way to dance around that.

God of War has none of that - nice combat, awesome graphics, incredible production values.

echoshifting, however, has a nice way of deciding which is better for his needs though.

wow yeah i don't really think that's true at all Himuro. There's far, far more combat than puzzles.

Advent Rising has a smoother framerate than Shadow of the Colossus

oh and it has more than one color

the ironic thing is Advent Rising has pretty severe framerate issues at times too :lol

God of War is more similar to DMC than you think, despite the fact that each game feels different. I mean, you're still swinging a huge weapon and executing combos on a bunch of bad guys. That makes them more than a little alike.

I'd agree with that; though there are quite a few puzzle/elements, God of War is definitely focused on action. Very cinematic... action. Very... drool...

Get both. God of War and Shadow of the Colossus for the price of one next gen game!
He spekas the truth.

If not both now, get one now, then next month the other. I'd get SotC first if you really liked the kind of atmosphere and experience from Ico. Otherwise, get GoW.

God of War is nothing like DMC. The thing that's most comparable to God of War is Prince of Persia. GoW is emphasized in puzzles, DMC is not. The action is there to get to the next puzzle in all honesty. The action isn't what I would call the best out there but it's fun.

Good point. Maybe I'd call it a mix between DMC and Prince of Persia: SoT where (nearly) everything is done better. It definitely has more/better action than PoP but the platforming in God of War is awful, so someone for whom that is PoP's best feature is going to be pretty underwhelmed by GoW.

But again, I'm not really trying to say DMC and God of War are alike...I just think that someone who preferred it to Ico should get God of War over SotC.

SOTC might be the most overrated game in GAF's history.

God of War is actually fun. It might not be the artistic achievement that SOTC is, but it's TEN TIMES the game.

God of War has like ONE real platforming segment (in you-know-where), and i beat it in like my second try. But even if you have difficulty with it, there's no way that can define the game. PoP has waaaay less combat than God of War too, it's not even close.

can you really say no to this puppy

God of War FTW. Seems most who've replied agree, which is surprising. Everyone is so far up Shadow's ass, it's ridiculous.

But both games are great in their own right. I just think God of War is a) a more solid title all around and b) is most definitely only $19.99.
