GOG 2011 Holiday Sale - Virtually everything 50% off

My sale haul:

Just got myself a new laptop and was thinking of what simple games to get for it. I picked up:

Heroes Of Might And Magic 2: Gold Edition
Heroes Of Might And Magic 3 Complete
Heroes Chronicles
The Incredible Machine Mega Pack

Best $20 ever spent.

To Minsc: Why didn't you put Never Winter Nights in your most play post? Thought it was supposed to be good.

As I understand it, NWN is a better *tool* than it is a *game*. That is, it's a good, well-featured construction kit and DMing device, but the actual included campaign is a bit meh. That said, the expansions added significantly better campaigns, so it's still a solid purchase - just the vanilla game was lacking.

Was tempted by gabrial knight games but I think i'll stay away from the adventure games. I can get equally nostalgic watching those games be played on youtube.

I'm considering Ultima 7 and the bioware games just to have for a rainy day away from home on my work laptop.

I played it safe. Desperados, Sim City 2000, Little Big Adventure, Little Big Adventure 2 (and Empire Earth, naturally). The other members of the Office GOG pool got Outcast, Icewind Dale, Icewind Dale 2, Baldur's Gate, and Baldur's Gate 2 so it's a fruitful sale in that respect!

Spent all the moneys I'm going to spend at GOG until the last day of the sale (supposing I have money left after Steam's daily deals).

Picked up:
Alpha Centauri - Huge fan of Sid Meier's games, this is the only one I've never played!
Wing Commander: Privateer - love these type of games.
Nox - Competent Diablo clone, yes please!
Imperial Glory - It's like total war...but more like 96% war.
Starflight 1+2 - Played one of these on Genesis, it's what I wanted Mass Effect to be.

I've already picked up most of my must-wants so far in other sales. My preliminary list is Space Rangers 2, MDK2, Blood, Baldur's Gate 1, Icewind Dale 1 and 2, Neverwinter Nights Diamond (I have the disc, but I'm lazy), and Realms of the Haunting.

Alpha Centauri will eat hours and hours of your life.

what type of game is Little Big Adventure? I remember back when it was released I heard people compare it to Zelda. Is that a decent approximation?

And you will love it. You will cry, "Take more, take all of it!"

So what's the better game, Icewind Dale 1 or 2?

Also how awesome is Freespace 2?

Freespace 2 is so good it killed its own genre because everybody just gave up trying to do anything better. That's not true, but if you have a flight stick or joystick of some sort, get Freespace 2 - you won't believe how amazing it is.

I'm curious about the answer to Icewind Dale as well.

Might pick up the Crusader games, but I already have a huge backlog on GoG.

And I managed to win a copy of Master of Orion 1+2, so I also have to give that game a shot.

I bought, um, a lot of things.

Pleasant surprise: couldn't find about 15 games I was looking for. Turns out I had bought them last sale. Wooho!

I can get to the checkout but it won't process my order. I guess i'll have to wait a few hours.

I like that GOG is so busy they're having problems like these, though. They deserve success.

In gameplay terms, yeah. The structure's rather different from Zelda, though, much more story-focussed rather than being divided into discrete dungeons.

That said, it uses AITD/RE-style rotational controls, so make sure you can adapt to them before diving in!

Wars have been started over this question. Nations have burned to the ground.

Icewind Dale 2.

It is great. If you do buy it, don't forget to read up on and then install the brilliant mods.

Thanks for the replies. Guess I'll just buy all 3!

That's been my problem. I buy so many things on gog that my wishlist now is like 10 items, and those are more like "MAAAAAYBE" than "I really freakin' want these NOW!" Might go back and complete my Might & Magic collection by grabbing VII and VIII, but outside of those and Swat 3, my MUST HAVES have long been fulfilled and or bought earlier today.

Got my copy of Empire Earth... now I'm trying to get some willpower to not buy a bunch of stuff here.

If you don't buy stuff then you are a bad person. The whole point of the free game was to get you to see and buy things from GoG. Freedom isn't free (it costs a buck oh five)!

Man, Activision really needs to let GOG release the missing Sierra adventure games. Can't believe they still don't have Quest For Glory (AKA THE BEST SIERRA SERIES).

edit: Ugh, the site timed out after I confirmed my PayPal transfer. So I've given them money but I don't know if the games are actually in my account.

edit edit: Nevermind, everything worked out.

Games I'm looking at:

The Last Express - $2.99
Another World: 15th Anniversary Edition - $4.99
Duke Nukem 3D: Atomic Edition - $2.99
Baldur's Gate 2 Complete - $4.99
Planescape: Torment - $4.99
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura - $2.99

Total: $23.94

Oh man, should I do it?

Someone convince me that I don't need to play the first Baldur's Gate to enjoy the second one.

Yes you should. But wait until their serves stop getting hammered.

On BG2: As long as you're okay with some longer exposition, the opening conversations with the characters will all tell you what you need to know, if you're willing to be honest about you confused you are.

Hey, I love GoG! I've bought games from there before, and who am I kidding, I'll probably put down 20 or so for some games.

I'm in for Nox, Witcher, Realms of the Haunting and Ultima VII. I'm interested in Scratches but I want to stay in my budget.

Yup, bought Temple of Elemental Evil, finally, and still haven't played 10 bucks Ultima 7 yet D:

BG1 is enjoyable but BG2 trounces it in nearly every respect. You're not missing much by jumping straight to the sequel. Nothing that can't be explained in a few sentences, anyway.

Thing about BG1 is that you're starting at level 1.
Level 1 in a D&D game is no fun. You have like 4 or 5 hit-points, no abilities, and a large rat will feel like a final boss to you. It's hard work and for the most part the quests are pretty bland and you spend quite a bit of the beginning of the game in the wilderness praying you don't get one-shotted until you get a couple levels.

BG2 starts you IIRC somewhere at or above the level you'd be at if you beat BG1. Needless to say you'll have access to tons of skills, characters, and so on. Plus the sequel is better in pretty much every way. Quests, playable characters, villains, etc etc etc.

Sounds good. This goes for the Icewind Dale games as well?

No, IWD1 is considered better than 2 in everything. Even in graphics actually, due to the loss of 3D accelerated fog of war in the sequel.

And to the guy who said he's getting Arcanum instead of the D&D games due to lack of patience, imo you'll need a ton more of that for Arcanum with how inexplicably clunky it is. D&D just takes a while to learn the rules which are simpler than they seem (I never played pen and paper stuff myself) then the games are super intuitive and accessible and fun to play through, up to any modern standard. But also can be pretty hard in certain encounters and such.

What's the best pinball game on the service?

Since I already have all the D&D stuff, Tex Murphy and Gabriel Knight series, and HoMM I'm thinking about grabbing:

Alpha Centuri
XIII
Phantasmagoria 1/2
Divine Divinity
Reals of the Haunting - someone on gaf said it was a classic horror FPS or something?
Ultima 7
Little Big Adventure

Hoping I don't buy too much since the Steam sale is so close.

Ultima 7
Two Worlds
Freespace 2
Divine Divinity
Icewindale 1 & 2
NwN Diamond(I had a copy but it's lost =(
Planescape: Torrent
BG2
Arcanium

Any other recommendations?

Blerp. I clicked process order and it dumped me back to the cart? Has that happened to anyone else? I have no idea if I was charged or not.

Huh, so Starflight is a precursor of sorts to Star Control?

It's an open world space opera RPG--you'll spend much less time in tactical combat than in consulting the star map, upgrading your ship, negotiating with aliens, looking for profitable planets to mine, and looking for clues to solve the central conflict before time runs out.
