GOG 2011 Holiday Sale - Virtually everything 50% off

Anyone still having trouble buying games? I have no idea why it's just dumping me back to the cart.
I had no problem yesterday but today I'm experiencing the same thing. I assume the site is overloaded? Anyone else having this problem at the moment?

BG: not necessarily but the story in BG2 is a direct continuation from BG1. There's a mod that turns the whole thing into one big experience.

Freespace: no, the story in FS2 isn't too important and the mission logs will bring you up to speed. And there are mods that basically rebuild the first game in FS2's engine.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't played either BG before, so I'll just get the first game I think then for now.

Anyone else having issues with their orders going through still? With both PayPal and direct CC order, I click "Process order now", it waits a few seconds, and then reloads the order screen.

LET ME GIVE YOU MONEY, GOG!

Edit: I see others are having the same issues, as well.

The best way to play BG1 now is something like EasyTutu which converts BG1 to the BG2 engine. A bunch of mods won't even work unless you do this. Problem is, you can't convert the game unless you also have BG2.

BG1 is fun for historical reasons and it still plays well.. It's just that the sequel is absolutely massive and it does nearly everything better than BG1. You wouldn't even miss much of a story by skiping it.

Problem just cleared up for me and I finally managed to pay with PayPal so all I can suggest is to just wait for a bit and keep trying until it works.

I think IWD1 is a nicely balanced and "shorter" RPG with a bigger focus on action that will give you a good introduction to the infinity engine D&D games (~20-40 hours compared to ~50-100+ or so). You still need to do a little reading of the manuals if you're new to the material, but in IWD1 you get to make a full party of 6 characters yourself, starting from level 1 going to the high 20s, and it doesn't dwell too long on the lower levels like Baldur's Gate 1 does, which a lot of people dislike. The battles are fun in IWD1, and the plot is good too, with some enjoyable voice acting occasionally mixed in. Graphically, the pre-rendered environments are very pleasing, and I also enjoy the wintry theme. The music is great as well. By the time you finish Icewind Dale you should have a very good grasp of the way you want to play BG2, what class and tactics you prefer to use, since the Baldur Gate games normally only have you making a single character and recruiting others to your cause, so the decision of what character do I make out of dozens and dozens is a little more intimidating if you're new.

Been wondering what to buy, and think this post completely sold me to finally check out IWD1. I played Baldur's Gate years ago, so while the urge to buy it is there, I think I'm much more interested in playing something "new" instead. I played Baldur's Gate while my friend played IwD, so good memories there.

Really want to pick up Rayman 2 but like others, not sure the quality of the port.

Besides that though, are the Rayman titles worth it?

Also, does anyone have any thoughts about which is the better purchase if I had to choose between Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six and Swat 3: Tactical Game of the Year Edition?

They are pretty different games. R6 is more like a FPS-strategy game (you spend a lot of time planning out the paths/actions) and S3 is more like a FPS-adventure game, although definitely more FPS than adventure.

If you want something more akin to R6: Vegas or the later R6 games then Swat 3. I'd say R6 is the better game but it's a very different experience.

So how's my cart?

Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate II
Simcity 2000
Caesar 3
Arcanum

Thinking about adding Duke 3d but that's about it.

So should I go for Roller Coaster Tycoon complete or number 2?

Technially all u need is 2 since I'm pretty sure u can just import all of 1's scenarios and 2 has everything that 1 had and more. Though I got both just to have them since RCT is like one my favorite series/games.

I need some advice

Will I be able to complete BGII easily if I finish The Temple of Elementhal Evil?

Is Another World good on iPad?

Is UT2004 good with bots? I remember enjoying it.

Will I be able to complete BGII easily if I finish The Temple of Elementhal Evil?

Kind of an odd question. Temple of Elemental Evil uses the 3rd edition D&D rules whereas BG2 uses AD&D (aka 2nd edition) so there will be some differences in how things play in that regard. BG2 also uses a pausable realtime combat system whereas ToEE is entirely turn based. They really are quite different from one another so I don't think proficiency in one is really going to translate to proficiency in the other beyond knowing what spells do what.

Is Another World good on iPad?

It's ok, the touch controls are better then a lot of iOS games but it still plays better on something with buttons, even a keyboard is superior.

Is UT2004 good with bots? I remember enjoying it.

All the UT games have phenomenal bot AI so yea it's great.

I never ever had problems with Fallout games but BGII is underwhelming. Fallout is the only isometric RPG I was able to love (might be because it was my first RPG).

Just bought Alpha Centauri, I hope it's good.

I bought it yesterday, and after playing it for about 20 minutes, I'd best describe it as obtuse. Definitely read the instruction manual first, this game is as unintuitive as they come, it seems.

Let me put this out there: as a UX snob, gog.com is just the damn sexiest DD service around. People wonder why people don't accept other DD services? Outside of Steam and GOG, they are ugly and don't inspire user confidence. Steam is alright, but GOG is beautiful, snappy, places exactly the right information in exactly the right place...

On a game page, I get a custom splash, list of extras, bullet "hot points" about the game's perks, cart and wishlist buttons which use Javascript instead of taking me off the page, pop-out screenshots, user reviews. Once I've purchased the game it's on my shelf with a quick link to the forums. And it all is space-conscious and again, beautifully designed.

I love you GOG.

Might want to go see a doctor, your serotonin receptors appear to be broken ;b

I started it two times but it seems to be very deep and hard so I end up reading manual and then not playing the game. I have installed it again, must push through this dungeon to the first city.

I played a lot of strategies back in the day so it's ok for me.

also bought Freespace 2 and UT2004.

We should have some sort of contest that awards those users who complete at least one of their newly purchased games from GOG before everyone else, encouraging us to actually play the games instead of letting them collect virtual dust in our backlog like I expect many of us will do.

:P

Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga
Icewind Dale Complete
Planescape: Torment
Icewind Dale 2 Complete
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
RollerCoaster Tycoon 2: Triple Thrill Pack

This is my haul and I may go back for the Witcher 2 at some point if I don't spend my money during the Steam sale.

With all these and the new Humble bundle I got a ton of great pc games for less than $40!

I never ever had problems with Fallout games but BGII is underwhelming. Fallout is the only isometric RPG I was able to love (might be because it was my first RPG).

I don't know about underwhelming, I actually found jumping back into BG2 earlier this year rather overwhelming. The world is so huge and filled with places to go and things to do, plus it's been years since I've played AD&D so it took a while for me to get my head around how classes and builds operate again. I think I restarted about six times just to play around with different approaches to tackling the main quest (i.e. get lots of monies), and mess about with different companions and their builds.

Fallout runs like a dream. Played it for a long time last night. And I've never seen it with the higher resolution mod before. Obviously still old, but it looks kinda good! Still as fun as ever.

How is the first Broken Sword game? Thinking about picking it up, though why are so many reviews on GOG down on the director's cut edition? Is it bad?

It wasn't loading my Wishlist, either, but when I switched the view of "Owned" to the List option and THEN went to Wishlist, it worked. That said, when I try either of them now, they work, so maybe it's fixed all 'round.

It's not for everyone. I rather enjoyed Planescape Torment, but I actually stopped 10 or so hours in when I tried BGII. I'm actually considering giving it another chance sometime soon, as I didn't hate it and I was pretty young at the time. As I recall my main beefs were with the combat design, which always seemed quite trial and error based to me. If the enemies had the right set of spells that you didn't have the right counter for it was really hard to recover from so it seemed like it was designed with Quicksave / Quickload as a first class mechanic, something which I've always hated.

Also the story is solid and much of the dialog is quite funny, but there is still plenty of B-Grade fantasy filler that you have to read through, for every great Minsc or Jan line that you remember there were 10 more that were not worth the time to read.

Can someone help me trim this for someone with a moderate amount of gaming ADHD? I LOVE old games, but this purchase seems completely absurd for someone who just bought the humble indie bundle :P

EDIT: I LOVE horror, fantasy, sims, "art games", and RPGs. I don't have much patience for FPS games unless they're bordering on the absurd, and point and clicks really have to draw me in. Also, I prefer old RPGs be simplistic and visually appealing (Diablo 2, Rogue), since certain outdated features will just make me instantly put down the game.

UT2k4 is amazing, period. It's a dumb but incredibly satisfying shooter.

The new content really clashes with the old, both the video and the audio. And the new areas are kind of unnecessary. But mostly, the PC version is depressing since it's such an obvious tablet port (it'll make more sense when you try it).

Thankfully, GOG supplies the original version as an extra with the purchase of the Director's Cut. Just plug it into SCUMMVM and you're good to go!

Honestly, most of that stuff is pretty great. I'd switch Baldur's Gate 2 for 1 and I'd drop Might and Magic entirely (I never played them when I was younger and I just couldn't get into them now. Besides, I hear MM7 is by far the best in the series). I'm also not sure about the PC port of Guilty Gear.

edit: And even though I also picked it up, I have a feeling that Rayman 2 would be a bad idea unless you're already OK with older 3D platformers.

I like older 3D platformers if they're SM64, but that's as far as I'll go :P Dropped Rayman 2, switched BG2 for 1. Also considering dropping Might & Magic since I only want it so I can laugh at how hilarious the first one will be, and that's probably a TERRIBLE reason to pay $5 for it ._. Uuuuugh decisions.... All great advice though, thanks!

Ok I think i've narrowed down my cart to these 4

Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate II
Caesar III
Aracanum

So unless someone can convince me to get Duke 3D or Alpha Centauri, think that'll be my haul for the sale.

Not sure about Duke 3D since I don't kno if it holds up and I didn't really enjoy what I played of the 360 demo and Centauri seems interesting but I've never played a Civ game.

The last time I tried to play BGII, I found really frustrated by interface, especially for keeping track of casting spells. I don't think I could get past it nowzadays.

I started it two times but it seems to be very deep and hard so I end up reading manual and then not playing the game. I have installed it again, must push through this dungeon to the first city.

I had a bit of the same problem, just starting and looking at all the mage and cleric spells that you have to read about and try out is really daunting even if you read up on the D&D rules.

I found that starting with BG1 (especially with the easy TuTu mod) really makes it easier to get into BGII since you put up with the incredibly slow low level combat and learn everything just as you go along.

But M&M 4-6 (and 7) are great games that hold up. Descent 1+2 is what I'd cut. Maybe Blood, but I found the difficulty tiresome instead of challenging.

Descent 1+2 is what I'd cut.
Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.

Descent is still one-of-a-kind. It plays like nothing else and it's absolutely worth buying just to try it. And it helps that it's still a really good game!

And then there's DXX-Rebirth which updates the game to run on modern computers at ridiculous resolutions (+ widescreen) using nearly any controller. It's wonderful.

edit: Fixed URL.

My boyfriend told me to get descent, so I can't cut it. :P I made my purchase, thanks for the help GAF! Ended up taking epmode's advice, but didn't cut M&M since the temptation of playing an old RPG for the lulz was too strong.
