I have the closed alpha. Is this a new client, or just a public release of of the current client?
I use Big picture a lot, so in Steam it's easy, whatever I launch in big picture, knows it's on the TV and fullscreens there, and usually doesn't need any mouse clicks. All other stuff always needs manual switching and numerous mouse clicks, and walks over to my PC to get right. I know I'm not a typical user, and it's kind of my fault to have hundreds of games spread on different services, but it just sucks that there isn't a way to consolidate all the lists. I'd be fine with just having one unified friends list at least, that would allow me to join or vice versa.
Also, Origin is a massive resource hog, and I don't want to have it running in background all the time.
Still need the invite to get the client I presume?
Noticed that GOG games seem to be on steam now.
what?
One of many examples;
http://store.steampowered.com/app/359850/
It's not out, and uses the GOG graphic.

Looks like i will be buying a lot more games on GOG now.
Kind of wish i bought the Star Wars stuff when it was on sale now
I signed up for the beta.
Although, I honestly dislike the sudden rise of multiple clients now that Steam has been a great success. Once they start releasing exclusive titles like EA and Ubisoft have done with Origin and uPlay, respectively, things will just start to get worse for the platform. At least GOG would just be an alternative and not a competitor.
I agree (I don't even use steam myself), but Galaxy is completely optional. Some people just felt the need for a client to patch/friend list/achievements... so why not? As long as they don't force it upon me, it's great.Although, I honestly dislike the sudden rise of multiple clients now that Steam has been a great success.
Will the alpha client auto-update to the Beta client or do I have to download the beta client separately?
I hope it's a huge success, a drm free client with all these features deserves it. Being able to rollback patches is pretty cool.
They should make a huge sale to attract attention to this new endeavor of theirs. By itself, it won't make a big splash, since people who are talking about it are the people that already knew it was coming.

So now, playing a game on GOG offer (almost) the same bonuses as steam plus drm free, fair regional prices and so on.
That regional pricing can be little meh tho. Witcher 3 is good example of this, they offered me some store credit [that I don't want nor need] just because was so much more valuable currency at the time than USD. To make up difference instead of actually dropping price of the game.
they were clever, now and $ are much closer and the game is still to be released.
