It was very nice of them to include the Original version of Broken Sword with the Director's cut. Go gog, go.

excellent OP, that mod link you put together is fantastic too, thanks for that.
what's the over/under on them getting System Shock 2 this year? they really pulled in a lotta the big ones after that stunt of theirs.

Maybe mentioned in the other thread but the original Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars is now included (as an extra) when you buy the Director's Cut version. Fricking awesome news! The Steam version does NOT include this.

Direct link to the game's page
Thank you so much for this - I really dislike the changes to the director's cut so looking forward to playing Broken Sword again properly

MAN DO I LOVE GOG.

That Broken Sword update is exactly why they're so great.

Here's hoping that they can rope EA this year!

So is it just the old EA and LucasArts back catalogues that gog is missing which aren't stuck in copyright hell, or am I forgetting something?

The big four, from most significant to least:
EA
LucasArts
Eidos (Square Enix) -- Deus Ex 1 is the only pre-2003-ish game they've put on DD services
about half the Activision legacy catalog

Obviously there are tons of other publishers that would be interesting; all of the Learning Company stuff would be pretty neat, naturally, and Apogee/3d Realms still sell a few things exclusively through their own site which is bullshit... but those four are the major ones.

For the longest time I was under the impression that as a filthy European, I could not buy stuff from GOG.

Fixed that late last year when I picked up all texas murphy games. :)

It's made by CD Projekt.

Moto Racer 3 was on the pc? :D I loved moto racer 2 on the ps1 back when I was in school, had a mate who was NUTS over motorbikes, fun game.

Website says 2002, I thought the game was made in 1999/2000?

Subbed! Thanks Minsc... again. :D What surprises GOG reserves for us this year? A complete shutdown of the service followed by EA/Activision classic catalogs inclusion as reconciliation present? Or maybe a costumer credit card details leak? Stay tuned...

If only I had known. :(

Then I could have said, huh, I wonder who that is. ;)

Anyway, alls well thats ends well. I just thought I would post it in case someone else was as stupid as me.

I'd be down to play Theme Park again.

There's still no shortage of titles I'd love for them to get their hands on. I could probably easily list 50+ (even more when you include stuff that's old, but still for sale by the publisher like the ~6 YDKJ titles), so hopefully they have another good year! GOG is always very optimistic when they talk about the future, maybe they'd even settle for letting EA or other people get even more of a cut than normal just out of the kindness for their customers. Or not. But they did put up a decent Q&A with DOSBox a short while ago:

Every new key partner announced on GOG is basically one more step towards convincing the few remaining skeptical ones. The massive licensing deal we signed recently with Atari-Hasbro for some major D&D RPG games (Baldur’s Gate anyone? :) allowed us to go back to some key publishers with some heavy arguments on the plate and we are working hard to sign some major titles in 2011. Rights owners need to be shown that our model is working fine, not causing any harm and most important, that it can help them monetize some products that got forgotten in their attics while millions of people have been expecting their comeback for ages. Being only 2 years old, I think GOG quite achieved that so far.

And they discuss a little on piracy (it's basically illogical to worry about it) and the best way to attract sales of older DOS/Windows games (bundle tons of extras, digital artworks/music, easy installer that works and good price points).

I doubt I'll support them with any more money until they fix the bug in Moto Racer 2 which makes you unable to go past 3rd gear, such bullshit that they haven't fixed it.
What makes it even worse is that a lot of people have written support tickets and they won't even answer.

Yea, that's always a red mark against any sort of DD service, not completely surprising for one focusing on older games, but I suppose some games get less (or perhaps closer to no) testing than others. Steam's the same way, a few titles I've purchased had to be manually fixed to work (though it does not promise Windows 7 compatibility). When I bought I76 from GOG, it really didn't work quite right either, but it's since been fixed.

With the Moto Racer games, they're not available on any other service, imo it's not like GOG is screwing you over, I would imagine no matter where you bought it, it wouldn't have worked, it's just that only GOG has bothered to make it available - which is more than anyone else. I myself wouldn't hold such a grudge, at least you got the game, but worst case scenario, I'd request a refund on the item, on the basis of it being defective, not boycott the service.

Either way, good luck! I like to support them and overlook things more than most people though, because they're really the only company that actively seeks older games. If a dozen out of hundreds and hundreds don't work, well I'll just hope those dozen are the ones I don't care to play. :)

That, and they do sometimes fix these things, I've seen a few dozen + cases of games getting new installers, bugs fixed, etc. Most of the time they don't turn a blind eye like they've done with that title.

GOG is awesome and I choose their service wherever possible.

Thank you for this thread. My first subscription on GAF.

You can download the original version at any time in the extras section on the GOG page. Anyone that has already bought the game can get access to it. Just look under "Downloads for this game" on your My Account page.

So if I already bought Broken sword will my version be updated or is it only new purchases? Quote makes it sound like only new purchases.

All versions have it; if you go to your games page, you'll see the extras there.

Well, I was being a bit overly dramatic, but they are pretty much screwing me over with this game considering it makes it unplayable half of the races, I think at best I could get like 29th out of 30th place :(

I've been pretty happy with the other 29 games I've bought from them though!
:lol

So...GOG is teasing us again. My first reaction is, "POLICE QUEST?!", but the header image doesn't look like it.

Edit: Looks like text adventure games. Maybe Infocom's catalogue?

Someone found this somewhere on the website, so that basically confirms PQ (if it's real), but the thing at the top looks like this, so I'm going to say it's multiple titles, including Zork.

What's up with listing Broken Sword: Shadow Of The Templars as Circle Of Blood in the OP?

It's the european title of the original (non-director's edition) I thought, though maybe Rufus is right and it is the original US title, either way I just decided to use it to emphasize that the game release is not the re-done version, since afaik the new version has never gone by that name, I'll clarify it a little further. :)

Absolutely love the whole concept behind GOG (:bow Poland :bow2), but of course the big games for me would be the Lucasarts graphic adventure games and of course the Ultima titles. Hoping they will eventually get them this year, they are already off to a great start.

It's worth bearing in mind that - if the Sonny Bonds reference is faked - Infocom did do a couple of police procedural titles themselves (Deadline, Witness), so that fits with the ribbons too.

I wonder if they'll go for individual releases, Lost Treasures (so two releases) or Masterpieces. LToI omitted Leather Goddesses of Phobos (could be purchased separately due to its adult nature); Masterpieces omitted Shogun (due to licensing from James Clavell, as I recall) and Hitchiker's Guide (although the popular - and free - web-app version of HHGTTG would come out shortly afterwards, anyway).

I would imagine that Masterpieces is the most hassle-free release, unless they go for individual titles. Having said that, it also includes some amateur titles from the first IFComp, and licensing might be awkward for that. Alas, I already have Masterpieces, but it's still good to get the games out there!

Further thought: Given that GOG have deals in place with both DOSBox for DOS titles and ScummVM for graphic adventures, I wonder if they've struck a deal with one of the Z-Machine interpreter coders to bundle a more modern interface with the titles?

Hey, maybe it's all a big sham, and they're actually going to release Cornerstone!

I'm going to speculate and say that even if that Sonny Bonds thing is real it's not Police Quest. That seems too obvious. I mean-- the police tape was already way more than enough to evoke "POLICE QUEST"-- why would they need to add some secret text to 'confirm' that it's Police Quest? If real, it just seems inserted for the lulz. So I'm gonna guess that it's Infocom stuff only (which I am totally cool with). Also, it seems like it would be a waste to announce them both at the same time. Guess we'll see!

Great thread for a great DD retailer. I wonder if, as the years roll by, GOG will add newer older games to their catalogue, so that they're perpetually 5-10 years in the past for their newest games.

I'd buy Grim Fandango in a heart beat. That's the number 1 game I want on GOG. Seriously hope they get LucasArts this year.

I was thinking about this, but the problem for the most part is, barring the really really obscure titles, the newer older games (especially when you fast forward 15 years so today's releases are the older games) are probably always going to be easily available on the same digital services today, or at the very least, they'll always be in your Steam list or whatever, so there'd be almost no incentive to re-purchase from GOG.

They get the occasional title like King's Bounty or other titles not too too old, but for me their biggest selling point is that they manage to bring older games that aren't on other services (and never likely to be), and get them working well on current OSs.

I guess eventually we'll run out of older titles from the 90s, so maybe they will just keep rolling out slightly newer titles sans DRM.

Lucas Arts on GOG would be even bigger than the Atari-Hasbro bringing the infinity engine classics imo. That is assuming they'd get all their old stuff up, including the all-time classics X-Wing and TIE Fighter. Otherwise it'd be a little less significant but still cool, since a bunch of their stuff is on Steam/elsewhere already, but having all their hits on GOG would be amazing. And I would buy every last one. :)

Can we finally get the Quest for Glory series on there please. Come on GoG, make it happen. Who has the rights to QfG anyway, Activision correct?

Yeah, it's strange how the DD sites started releasing the old Sierra and Lucasarts adventure games.... and then stopped. More people need to play Quest for Glory for sure.

If Ultima ever showed up that would mean the absolutely massive cache of classic games EA has been holding hostage would be fair game. They have the rights to Origin's stuff like System Shock Wing Commander and Ultima, The Bullfrog games, Westwood, and all the old Maxis games. As it stands, all of those games are pretty much rotting away awaiting EA to bastardize them with a reboot of some nature.

The banner now includes the words "maze" and "passages", which brings to mind the famous line - "You are in a maze of twisty little passages, all alike" - again pointing in the direction of text adventures.

Further down, there's a section with "will", "work", "decided" and "atreet" in, which looks like it's intended to evolve into that leaked .jpg from previously about Sonny Bonds (also note that the leaked .jpg had a little bit of police tape in the bottom-left corner, which corresponds to the same onscreen position).

Finally, over on the right there is "black", "are" and "eaten", which suggests "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue".

Police Quest and Infocom is looking extremely likely, now.

Buy em off Steam, they're DRM free. I got the complete id pack for like $20 (DOOM 1,2,3, Keen, Heretic, Hexen 1, 2, wolfenstein 1 + return... and maybe something else).
