GOG News and Updates 2011

GOG got Activision to sign a deal with them, aka the biggest publisher in gaming so it's not that crazy to think they might have gotten EA on board too.
EA is notoriously stingy when it comes to the old IPs they bought and subsequently destroyed. Not to mention that they're kind of schizophrenic when it comes to digital distribution in general.

Activision, on the other hand, has long been generous with their back catalog.

I'm not saying it's impossible for GOG to make a deal with EA, I say it would be impossible for them to not make a much much bigger fuss about it than they are doing now. I mean this current promo is pretty tame compared to the Activision announcement which they kept teasing for months in advance... :)

EA is pretty much the holy grail of old games and the fact that they are still not on board with GOG shows that there are considerable barriers. I think if GOG actually manage to get them aboard there will be a huge publicity stunt (I hope they learned from last time).

Edit: Hey, perhaps they are afraid to do something bigger because of the reaction to the last stunt and it is EA after all... *really unsure now*

Crazy theory time!

There's, inevitably, a thread on the GoG forums discussing this. Only thing is, there's a mildly unusual pattern of posts in it.

If a knowledgable person invites people to guess things, and later posts to say "wait and see" as to what the answer is... what's the 'wait and see' post *for*? Can it be assumed to be a tacit acknowledgement that one of the preceding answers is correct?

Because, well:

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/general/gogs_awesome_presentation_on_cdp_days/page1

There's only three guesses made before a mod makes what amounts to a "wait and see" post; Starflight, Elite and System Shock.

I freely admit I'm reaching, here. Reaching *so* hard.

(What would Elite mean? Take two?)

They did say (on April 1st, regarding April Fool's jokes):

I also tried to convince the team here to announce our new publisher who we've actually signed today, just because no one would believe us. But we decided that was too much of case of messing with everyone's head.

That suggests it's either *huge*, or *completely left-field*. Or both. So in short, Nintendo confirmed :-)

Edit: Regarding the font: I think I was thinking of the in-game text font for Wing Commander. Which is kinda similar, but doesn't have the slant to it.

Homeworld 2 is also a good fit concerning the colors:

Yea, it does a little.

Short of releasing a pre-packaged build of the free Ur-Quan Masters, little could be more disappointing than this being related Star Control 2, unless that meant it's tied to a good publisher with other unavailable games.

The PC version of Star Control 2 was inferior to the 3D0 release since it lacked the VA which Ur-Quan Masters includes (as well as the short CG scenes). It is also a little pointless since Ur-Quan masters already is compatible with Windows and runs perfectly, including the options to launch it as a portable program, and to use custom soundtracks - there are a few good SC2 music remixes made specifically for that purpose. I only elaborate since I've seen a few people post in the comments at GOG they'd be excited for Star Control 2, but I'd ignore it completely, as we already have a superior version.

Edit: Beaten! But Homeworld would be a lot more exciting for me if it were that. I don't know if we should be reading in to the colors or font too much though, might be there just to be misleading.

I agree. I'm almost positive it's Homeworld. The colors on the Homeworld 2 cover are almost identical. ..which is silly and circumstantial but there is one bit of concrete proof:

I purchased Homeworld: Cataclysm from Ebay roughly one month ago. Based on past history, every old retail PC game I get from Ebay shows up on a DD site within 6 months.

I believe the mystery image is a blue planet with a brown moon in front of it, all in a red sky (well, that's what I see when squinting). Someone must remember a game cover that looks like that...

Goddamn you, Lafazar. I got excited for a moment, thinking LBA had been released on GOG.
Sorry about that.

An ominous exchange from the GOG forums:

Also... I doubt it's EA or LucasArts. There's no counter on the frontpage. GOG ALWAYS does counters with big publishers.

You know, Destro and I went round and round on whether we should do a counter for this announcement. We ended up deciding not to (obviously :P).

Oh well, it seems to be Lucas Arts:

That's still very nice. Finally we get all those adventures not yet on Steam and hopefully ScummVM versions of the ones that already are on Steam (I consider the ScummVM versions superior to the Steam versions, since you can use the data files on any version and port of ScummVM). And X-Wing and Tie Fighter and Rebel Assault and perhaps a PROPER version of Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight (with the CD audio of the original release, I still could strangle Lucas Arts for that, what were they thinking releasing it like that on Steam?).

Lucasarts would be awesome. Pretty big and great catalog of games.

Well, they're all available on Steam.

The only things missing are the music in Dark Forces 2, X-Wing/Tie Fighter, Outlaws... oh and SECRET WEAPONS OF THE LUFTWAFFE!

Woo

Getting TIE Fighter (hopefully the enhanced DOS version with iMUSE) would be great. Would make sense they don't do a counter for LA as well, since previously mentioned, the majority of their stuff is on Steam. Although I didn't realize Full Throttle was, and come to think of it, a couple other classics probably aren't either, including Grim Fandango. So the above post is totally out of whack. :)

Oh Yes, they are all available on Steam, except perhaps Sam&Max, Day of the Tentacle, Zack McKracken, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, Curse of Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion, shall I go on?

I would take back all the mean things I've said about EA if they could just get on board with GOG. Whatever it takes for me to be able to play Sim Ant and Sim Tower again, I don't even care.

Ooh, Lucas Arts. Does that mean we might get some of their classic adventure games? I have yet to play Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle and Full Throttle so that would be sweet.

The Rebel Assault games aren't on Steam either. So there is, um, that.

edit: Damnit I just realized that I already own every single PC Lucasarts release that could possibly end up on GoG. Except maybe the Luftwaffe expansions which I'm pretty sure are fictional at this point.

An interesting side effect of Lucas Arts joining GOG is that a considerable part of Tim Shafers life work will be available on GOG (from Wikipedia):

1987 Maniac Mansion (NES Port), tools programmer, SCUMM (LucasArts)
1990 The Secret of Monkey Island, co-writer, programmer, additional designer (LucasArts)
1991 Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, co-writer, programmer, additional designer (LucasArts)
1993 Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle, co-designer, co-producer, co-director, co-writer (LucasArts)
1995 Full Throttle, project leader, writer, designer (LucasArts)
1998 Grim Fandango, project leader, writer, designer (LucasArts)
2005 Psychonauts, creative director, co-writer, designer (Double Fine, Majesco)

2009 Brütal Legend, creative director, writer, designer (Double Fine, Electronic Arts)
2010 Costume Quest, creative director, writer (Double Fine, THQ)
2011 Stacking (Double Fine, THQ)
2011 Trenched (Double Fine, Microsoft Game Studios)

Edit: GOG are a little devious, perhaps they are intentionally misleading us with that Outlaws hint. So I would still not count 100% on Lucas Arts joining GOG if I were you... :)

That would be awesome if they got good Lucas Arts stuff and not just a bunch of Star Wars crap already on Steam.

I was in the Sierra camp when I was younger so I missed out on stuff like Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc... I'd really like to be able to buy and play those legitimately.

Lucasarts!

I'd totally be posting some cool celebratory .gif from my random collection right now but I'm at work so like pretend something cool was posted.

Oh and...

ALL OVER MY FACE

EDIT: Home!

I've never actually played a flight game through DOSBox, how well does it handle joysticks?

I wonder if they'll go the Win 95 special editions of Tie/X-Wing instead, they can be made to work on modern machines and have easier support for sticks & pads.

They work but they're not that easy to configure. I still can't get Descent working well with my USB Sidewinder. It only recognizes about 4 buttons at once, no matter what I do. That's just not enough for a game like that (or like TIE Fighter).

DOSBox handles joysticks just fine as long as they use DirectInput (which most USB joysticks do anyway)

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but I can't help but think that a cryptic allusion to a game wouldn't contain the name of the game right there.

Secret developer is Rockstar; PC version of Red Dead Redemption confirmed! And the "Star" game is uh......Space Station Silicon Valley!

Last I tried the Win 95 edition of Tie Fighter it ran horribly, and that's after a bunch of screwing around to get it to work at all. And iirc, that was on XP. I'm afraid to try it in Win7 64. The DOS version would obviously work perfectly in Dosbox I'm sure, it's just too bad the windows version looks so much better. Tie Fighter desperately needs a remake. I'll still buy it either way, unless it's a straight CD dump of the Windows version with no tweaks.

I'm hoping they get Grim Fandango. I bought it right when it came out, but I was busy playing something else at the time, so I let a relative borrow it... and I found out later one of her children had destroyed it. I never actually got to play it. :(

HOLY SHIT LUCASARTS. Phew, had to get that out, sorry folks. :)

Yeah, but it's Lucasarts. Even when they come out and say they've signed up Lucasarts, it's going to take a while to sink in. Besides, they owe us a nice easy announcement. ;)

If they have Rogue Squadron 3D I am going to like collapse from sheer happiness. So many good memories and I couldn't get the game working at all under Win 7 64-bit recently (did manage to get it installed though).

To make the confusion complete, there is this:

If we signed a new publisher like LucasArts and I hadn't spent the last 4 days bringing you guys to a fever pitch of anticipation via obscure hints and teasing, I think they'd probably take me out back and shoot me.

Or just leave me to the feral polar bears.

They really love messing with us...

That outlaws is probably a reference to Full Throttle. Other one is probably either a Star Wars game or The Dig (if it is Lucasarts).

Edit: ^^^ That above quote pretty much confirms it. Sweet.

The last time I played through them was on my Vista 32 bit machine and I got them working flawlessly. Not sure how well they'll work on 64 bit, but hey that's what the GOG wizards are for.

Yes the Outlaws quote is clearly referencing Full Throttle...

Honestly, I wouldn't take that at face value. But maybe that's what they want us to think. So we'd better take it at face value. Unless that's what they're expecting. So I wouldn't take it at face value. Except...

(If it is Lucasarts, can I do a tiny wistful hope that Night Shift creeps in among all the big-name titles? Loved that game)

At this point, if it's not Lucasarts, it's EA, and I'd be okay with that too.

Overthinking: I was trying to find if there were any Capcom titles that could fit 'ride with the outlaws' (I should mention that I was also thinking that Outlaws could actually be the name of a racing team or gang, which would fit. And before anyone comments: Full Throttle's gang was the Polecats), because 'dream of the stars' *could* be dream of the S.T.A.R.S.

The outlaws thing could be talking about the Lucasarts FPS Outlaws.

If it is, someone at GoG needs to be taken out back and beaten about the head with some *good* cryptic clues, because that one's terrible!
