GOG News and Updates 2011

Leftfield suggestion: "Ride with the outlaws" -> Road Rash.

It does actually fit, it would mean EA, and it's pretty much within GoG's remit. And it allows that clue to be a clue and not just stating the answer directly :-)

Edit: Hang on. I'm kicking myself, now. There's a more obscure Ultima title named "Martian Dreams". Hmmm. Could be something here.

The last time I played through them was on my Vista 32 bit machine and I got them working flawlessly. Not sure how well they'll work on 64 bit, but hey that's what the GOG wizards are for.

The windows version doesn't have iMUSE though! :(

DOSBox version runs perfectly, 60fps at full vga 640x480 (in flight), same as Windows version, correct?

I'd take the iMUSE over slightly better visuals anyday. Having the battle / flight sound mixed in realtime based on what was taking place on screen really made the game. Some screens from my DOSBox:

There's probably some way to get AA with the OpenGL or D3D renderer in DOSBox too if I tried hard enough, but while it's not the prettiest game, I'll be damned if it's not one of the most fun games I ever played.

Plus all the Linux/Mac people get annoyed when GOG doesn't use DOS versions when it makes sense to, but I really don't care about them, other than to further my argument of the DOS version's superiority!

Agreed! Does DOSBox have decent support for anything other than SoundBlaster? I remember having some far-too-expensive Creative card which must have had special support for TIE Fighter because the music was incredible.

edit: I think it was AWE32?

I prefer General Midi I think, but you can use AWE32 and Roland / Gravis UltraSound from the DOS config, though I think DOSBox's emulation is lacking for anything beyond the Sound Blaster / General Midi choices - which those sound exactly how I remember.

The Sound Blaster support is as close to perfect as I can tell but man, it would be nice to have perfect Roland/AWE32 emulation. You don't even know how incredible it sounded back in the day. Lots of voices, reverb, etc.

You can also enable MT-32 emulation, but it still does not quite sound like a real MT-32. In most cases it's still miles better than either General Midi or Gravis. It's also quite CPU-hungry...

I haven't played the non-CD version of TIE Fighter since, uh, maybe 1994. TF is my favourite game of all time. Thanks for the shots, Minsc.

A re-release on GOG would give me an excuse for another playthrough. Actually, since I own the CD version, if they release the DOS version I'd be able to playthrough both and do a lot of shots and video of both!

It does technically use iMuse, it's just mixing the redbook audio direct orchestral score instead of the midi stuff so the transitions aren't as smooth but it is dynamic. Visually it looks a lot better since it runs on the XvT engine.

On a slightly related note, did anyone here try the Tie Fighter total conversion mod for X-Wing Alliance? It's seemingly vanished from the internet but it looked promising back when I saw it.

If it is, someone at GoG needs to be taken out back and beaten about the head with some *good* cryptic clues, because that one's terrible!

GOG has always hyped new publishers with incredible easy hints, i bet they do it intentionally. Therefore i eagerly await for GOG to announce their new publisher Lucas Arts on thursday.

Any clue what game this is referring to?

Hmmm doesn't really fit with DoTT, too horror themed and DoTT's boxart is predominately purple.

I can't think of any real horror themed Lucasarts games. Rescue on Fractalus scared the shit out of me as a kid but that has nothing to do with time travel.

I'm just guessing "System Shock" for all of these. Who knows, maybe it'll come true...

Lafazar's comments got me to buy Realms of the Haunting

No clue who this new publisher is. I'm hoping for something good, though :)

Don't think it's Lucasarts, too obvious and I don't think they ever had a horror title.

Well, Maniac Mansion can be considered part of the Horror Genre.

Is it possible that it's multiple publishers?

Someone on GOG pointed this out:

what game made you drEAm of the stars?
what game made you fEAr your past?

what about

what game made you rIDe with the outlaws?

So EA AND id software? No LucasArts at all?

Both EA AND Lucasarts.

You heard it here first, folks.

That would be the megaton to end all megatons.

Every time I stop and think about EA's library and how they are just sitting on it I get sad.

There are no games for PC from EA that come to mind that I can think of that I'd want.

That's not to say there aren't any, but none are immediately apparent. Except for the original NFS:SE. That would be fucking awesome.

Wow, EA own the whole back catalogue of Westwood Studios, Origin Systems, Maxis and Bullfrog. You can't tell me that you are not interested in any of their games...

outlaws. Yeah, it's not the fifth word, but I don't like looking too deeply into such things, you'll see whatever you want to.

System Shock 1 and 2 alone would be worth it.

Yeah, I was strictly thinking EA stuff. The only games that came to mind were NFS, LHX Attack Chopper and the EA Sports titles. Knowing that even just Bullfrog and Westwood are there... fucking WOW. Syndicate? Populous? Theme Park? Hi Octane? Dune 2? Sign me the fuck up.

Ultima, Crusader, Wing Commander, C&C, Dungeon Keeper, Jane's Combat Sims, Lands of Lore, Magic Carpet, Sim Whatever, System Shock and on and on and on.

I can't think of a single publisher with as many amazing PC games in their back catalog as EA. Only thing that comes close is Interplay.

I've never played Full Throttle :(
hopefully you get a chance to fix that soon.

I played about a 1/3 of the game for the umpteenth time a few weeks ago. Got busy and did not finish but that will not happen to first timers.

It was never a conscious choice, I just never came across it in my travels. The best I managed to do was the first Lucasarts Classics box which had DoTT, Sam and Max, Fate of Atlantis, a Rebel Assault demo disc and The Dig. Possibly something else as well. The second one had Full Throttle and a few others (Dark Forces?) but I never saw that in the wild :(

That's as close as I ever came to the entire Lucasarts back catalogue, aside from the odd game I managed to score (Loom, MI1) :(

Since it hasn't be said explicitly - this clue fits System Shock *perfectly*.

Prior to the start of the first game, you are employed to remove SHODAN's ethics controls, then placed into suspended animation. She becomes terrifying. So something you did in the past creates something which provokes fear.

I'm sure there's lots of other games that fit the bill, but I still believe!

(Having said that, if the background *is* blurred copies of relevant artwork, then no; System Shock was rather blue)

Me, in reference to the "Ride with the outlaws" clue earlier:

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but I can't help but think that a cryptic allusion to a game wouldn't contain the name of the game right there.

Latest clue:

"What game made you go to the underworld?"

I don't know what to think any more!
