GOG News and Updates 2011

Sweet, Desperados and the original Commandos are my favorite, uh, real-time tactic games or whatever they are called.

"Cannon Fodder Clones"? I can't think of an example prior to that.

I didn't actually intend the term to sound quite so dismissive! It's just that as far as I can recall, it pretty much defined the archetype.

You're totally right, to be honest...

... WAR! Never been so much fun! WAR! Never been so much fun! WAR! Never been so much fun! WAR! Never been so much fun! Talk to your brother, kill him with your gun, leave him lying in his uniform, dying in the sun! doo doo do do do doooooo

Missed out on it entirely, but the screens from the listing look pretty nice, there aren't too many pre-rendered isometric westerns, should be fun.

Edit: Is it wrong that I think the 2001 original looks better than the 2006 sequel? How do the two play?
You're not wrong. Detailed 2D with great art > mediocre 3D.

not played the steam versions, but should work fine there as well. check the forums to see if anyone's had any problems running those versions maybe. dunno

I saw mention (i.e. complaining) on the Steam forums about someone having issues, hence asking here.

played desperados 2 and helldorado btw? the weird 3d engine they have in those is pretty awesome, it looks and feels like the 2d. but it's 3d.. (uh yeah, haha) and can zoom in. it just looks really weird and cool. love both of those. their robin hood legend of sherwood game is also fantastic, too bad that hasn't got any sequels. all of these should be on download sites, maybe steam, are on gamersgate and gamesplanet at least.

Never played the sequels, quick peak at some screenshots puts me off a fair bit.

Might have to pick up the Robin of Sherwood one some time...

Yeah. Give Desperado's a crack. I quite enjoyed it (well I finished it in a foriegn language, so I must have)

No. It just means your eyesight is fine.

Yeah, it plays almost exactly like Commandos. The only major difference is that you can set up a sequence of actions, so there's a little more 'teamwork'. And I think it features more story / in-game cut scenes than Commandos -- but it's been forever since I played them.

Desperados is a good Commandos clone, but, IIRC, missions soon become too much action-y for my tastes. Having just a few men (and a woman), you should try to be as stealthy as possible, but there are times you are forced to kill dozens of people (soldiers/bandidos). And for that you don't need any strategic planning (most of the times, you just hide behind a corner with two men and kill everyone passing by).

It´s been years that I played Desperados, but I have very fond memories of it. As you said, some missions are better than the others, but overall it´s a great game. Kick-ass voice work for the German (original) version, great mix of really bad actors, good ones and Bruce Willis´s German voice. Hilarious.

Only letdown was the last mission, I could NOT pass it without cheating. Seriously, fucking
Cowboy Ninjas with poisoned insta-kill throwing knifes
.

I couldn´t finish Commandos 1, which I played after Desperados, I really missed the cool clock->programmed action mechanic.

The second one looks stupid and I didn´t buy it because it´s stupid 3d D:

That was a great addition to the formula. With a little better mission design, Desperados could have really become a classic (supported by the fact that there are so few Far West games, that the few that come out immediately get the attention of the aficionados).

This might be an out of place post, but does anybody have any recommended patches (official or otherwise) or mods for HoM&M 4? I'm going on a trip and picked this up on a whim.

Have you played HoMM 3? It's the better game FYI. Otherwise I don't think there are much in the way of mods or community patches for the HoMM games. Check the GOG forum on the game to be sure, their community is always on top of that stuff.

I've played all of them before except for 4. Just wanted to try this one out, since I sorta skipped it. I'll check up on the GoG forums, thanks for the advice!

So, GAF, I picked up Blood over the weekend. Been in the mood for some old school knucklehead shooters. Also been playing Bulletstorm and it's making me want to go through Painkiller again, which I'll probably get to after Blood and 'Storm.

But yeah, anyway, Blood. Man! This game is godlike. Nice and fast, nice and challenging. I love the lead character, I love the dark art style and I especially love the "OOOH!" and fountain of blood that errupts as I unload both shells into a zombie's chest. It's even got shout outs to Return of the Living Dead, my favorite horror film. Oh man, hah. I am not too fond of the ghetto mouse look stuff (I tried the mods Minsc linked to, nothing worked aside from the Doom / Blood hybrid thing, which ... eh), but otherwise, it's all spectacular. Can't believe I've never played this before. I love older Doom-like games and I love Monolith, I should have given this a spin much earlier. Ah well, better late than never.

Monolith, when on point, make such amazingly cool games, I swear. Wonder what they're up to these days.

Definitely not out of place. It was said earlier in the thread:

HoMMIV becomes a much better game with equilibrius mod.

So make sure to pay attention to that one, but I must say, GOG's forum maintenance on sticky-ing all the appropriate mod threads for each corresponding game's forum has gotten so accurate and complete, my mini-mod list is all-but-irrelevant now.

Blood is awesome. Really the only link for it I have is the main "One Unit Whole Blood" launcher utility, which works though is a little tricky to setup since you need to copy the files from the Blood installation to each individual sub-directory, there's quite detailed instructions. It ends up making Blood like 5GBs or something, so I just scrapped all those add-ons and use it solely with the main game, just for the convenience of wasd+mouselook... I can't even revisit DooM without that these days (zDoom).

This is regarding The Witcher 2 GOG preorder. I asked when the rest of the game will be put up after the initial preload:

Hello,

The rest of the game will be available the moment it is released. This will happen on May 16, 10 PM GMT and, to my knowledge, is the fastest you can get The Witcher 2 anywhere, at least as far as digital distribution is concerned. Having almost the entire game on your drive at that point helps a lot, too. ;)

Looks like GOG users will be getting the game May 16th instead of the 17th, giving us some extra time to download the remaining piece of the game and get a small jump on playing it.

Wasnt there supposed to be some new GOG client put up before the end of April? Any more word on that?

It was actually commented on today by their frontpage news:

UPDATED: So if you read this post earlier (or if you scroll down and read it now) you’ll see that we announced that the site update was going to be tomorrow, and that the site was going to be down. We figured, given our kind of rocky history with site updates, that you guys might like to know in advance.

Good news, then! We’re giving you more advance notice than we thought. It turns out that there are a few pernicious bugs with the new GOG downloader that we need to fix, so we’re pushing back the site update until the 35th of April (to keep things still as promised as “late April”) or, if you’re determined to stick with your “Gregorian calendar,” the fifth of May.

We’re still on schedule to have a game release tomorrow, but because we’re shifting our schedule around to reflect the changes wrought by moving the site update there won’t be a game on Thursday. On the bright side, we’ll be seeing a new and improved version of an old friend back on the site Thursday, and man do we ever have a great week-long promo starting for you guys tomorrow.

Pretty excited for TW2, but I still want to use Steam for it, stupid achievements. I'll still take a peak on the 16th though, if it does release earlier on GOG like you've posted.

how bad is it that I'm seriously considering buying it on both

HoMM4 has the equlibris patch which is highly recommended. There's a ton of mods for HoMM3. The most essential mod for HoMM3 IMO is the HD mod that allows you to use any resolution.

does it save creditcard info at all on there? don't think so. you have to type it in every time if you use a card, think so.

ah yep.

Good to know. How will they charge me for my Witcher 2 preorder though? Do I get an email telling me to type it in at some point?

Can anyone please give me advice here :D

Have 2 HardDisks with 2 OS´s. Why? Because i use one for games only, so i don't have to install unnecesary programs in relation to games. Like for example anti virus or productivity software. I don't even like to go online with the HardDisk thats dedicated to games since i don't have the protection of an AV software.

So when downloading the Witcher 2, i'll be in the other harddisk (the one not dedicated to games.) So once the download is complete will i be able to install in the OS thats dedicated to gaming ?

Hope i was clear, if not i could try to explain myself further.

Well NVM, i can just install it in the same OS i use for the general stuff or just connect using the games HD to validate like normally do. Just asked cause im not yet familiar with how the installer works for GOG.

Looks like D&D: Dragonshard is todays release ("That's the Atari game that made you go to the underworld."). Looks like something I might enjoy, an RTS mixed with D&D elements, wonder if it was any good.

You could just buy a SSD, use MSE and a modern, multi-core CPU... no performance hit :)

Be that as it may, GOG's version is DRM-free. No SecureROM, so no need for a net connection at all once you've downloaded it. The online-check upon installation is part of the SecureROM DRM in all the other versions.

MSE? Whats that?

Anyway, did cdP started preloading? I might preorder as soon as the credit allows.

Ok, not net. But does GoG use an a general installer? Or it'll be in an EXE in one of the Witcher 2 files?

MSE is Microsoft Security Essentials. MS' own antivirus program (also free).

Sh!t! In my defence i tought he was refering to a program that let the user use the SSD as a cahe to supplement the mechanical hard disk. :D

Any answers if the preloading started for the people that preordered?

Edit: What's Painkiller price and how it behaves under Win7? Painkiller is the only one i want from the list.

Edit2: Painkiller for 4? What the hell is going on there?

GOG uses a very light-weight .exe general installer for every game - though this is the first real modern release they launched, so it could be an exception to the rule and they might use some fancier installer, but it will still be an installation process, launching an .exe and picking a folder, etc.

Pre-loading starts May 10th I believe, but it is only available for those who have pre-ordered. I'm not sure if there is a cut-off point, though obviously you wouldn't need to pre-load if the game was out, but GOG did make it a point that you had to pre-order the game to get the pre-load.

Looks to be on sale for $3.99, my retail copy runs perfectly under Windows 7, I would imagine there'd be no issues with GOG's version.

gog games just use a regular installer yeah. same as any game off a disc.
Thanks so much for answering.

NVM, just checked the official GoG page. It mentiones everything save for the level editor.

This is really awesome. They gonna sell a massive load of copies.

Just realized i miss the UBIsoft promotion Wanted some FarCry again :(

Oh wow, hadn't noticed that Desperados was out. Loved that game back in the day. Don't think I ever finished it though.

Also loved the Robin Hood game that was just like it and Commandos as well. Would love it if they got that, because it's so hard to find.

Snagged up The Guild and Darkfall 1. The Chaser is apparently also good but I haven't had the time to play it yet.

Dragonshard is getting bad reviews on the site right now and it never looked interesting when it released so I'll skip that, especially at $10. I believe it had some cool stuff with fighting above and below ground at the same time though?

Never heard of today's release and at $9.99 don't plan to try it out.

Me niether. It looks kind of cool, though. Nice graphics and art style, and it seems like it might be a precursor to Relic's DOW 2, with the rpg/rts gameplay.

Someone take one for the team and tell us if it's any good.

The Dark Fall games look interesting, anyone have any impressions of them? I'm always interested in adventure-horror.

I didn't like them. I found Jonathan Boakes' (the Dark Fall creator) other game, The Lost Crown to be a lot better. It's not on any DD service that I know of, unfortunately.
