Goldman Sachs VR HMD BOM estimates

Their Vive estimate is way too low in my opinion. Vive tracking solution should be much more expensive then Oculus. Even if you are just limiting the BOM to the HMD's

What basis do you have for saying this? There are so many unknowns but based on what we know of lighthouse, a basestation should be fairly cheap to produce, in comparison to an IR camera at least.

I don't disagree so much with the idea of it being more expensive as there are two units, but "much more" is highly contestable.

I expect psVR to launch at 300$ Sony will try and get the BoM close to 300$ and take a bit of the loss and remake it by a couple of games or move controllers sold.

I really expect Sony to launch this shit at 300$ and throw a middle finger to oculus and valve.
Not saying whether Sony will hit $300 or $350, but I don't really see those $50 gaining or losing a whole lot of early sales. I'd pay the extra to get an upgraded Move controller :\
what matters are the killer apps
Yup. I'm hoping EVE Valkyrie can at least spark some interest in the space combat genre. Would be pretty neat if that gets 3rd party stick support to mimic the cockpit setup with camera tracking.
It's pointless to predict BOM when they don't have access to finished products and info about size of orders.
True. However, it happens all the time here on GAF and with an even greater sense of authority on the subject. Still its hard not to eyeball some oddities in this GS report.

I'd rather pay a little more for the superior experience. Don't know how making a lower end product is throwing the middle finger at higher end product.

It isn't a little more if you have to buy a gaming PC

If you already have a gaming PC, then aren't you more likely to be interested in the OR or Vive anyway?

Although having said that, I have a gaming PC and want both OR and PSVR as I'm sure Sony will have some first party games worth the price of admission.

Seems like a worthless assessment if they're not factoring in what's actually inside the Oculus or how much those cost to make or ANYTHING. They mention that the Oculus may have a coprocessor but they don't know?
What is this? ********? I can't believe that investment advisors can do crap like this.

I see that I'm not alone in my opinion. Personally I think the writer & editor of this should be fired and we here at GAF should step in. Pretty sure even the most rabid fanboys would do a better job, and know what a SSD is.

No one seems to consider HTC's established supply chain in the Vive price estimations.

That established supply chain doesn't do too much considering VR uses many unique parts and the fact the Vive will be low volume production.

I hate BOM estimates because they always neglect R/D and marketing.

People reading Bloomberg understand a Bill of Material never included R/D or marketing and is, in fact, a bill of materials.

They aren't doing a price analysis. They are doing a portion of a cost analysis.

A price analysis would be the culmination of:
BOM analysis
R&D allocation analysis
Marketing analysis
G&A cost analysis
Profit & market penetration strategy analysis

I would say "much more" is reasonable. Instead of a cheap webcam sensor with a wide-angle lens with built-in IR filter, you have a laser, a mirror, a motor, gearing capable of moving the mirror first vertical and then horizontal, a lithium-ion battery, and a laser sensor. And that stuff has to be made sturdy, to last a long time with the motor constantly sweeping the mirrors to point around the room very quickly.
