No Dead Snow?

People don't like killing Nazi Zombies any longer?

I cry for humanity!

What about The Outpost?

Sorry, I have the Nazis in my head....saw two documentaries in the past week and caught Saving Private Ryan on TV yesterday.

I saw the Unborn yesterday. It wasn't bad at all. Very well shot and Meagan Goode is in it.

Lol, I hope that was a joke post.

Let's see a few good recent horrors.

The Descent
Calvaire
Inside
High Tension
Planet Terror
Gozu

eh, not really a horror movie, more of a psychological thriller, but I watched Session 9 last night. decent movie, gave me the creeps. plus its free to watch on Hulu right now.

Reeker is another enjoyable one. Not one for fans of twist endings though, you'll probably have guessed it before the end. But the build up is fun and gory.

The Descent (make sure its the UK cut)
The Devil's Rejects (more of a sadistic road movie than straight out horror, but still so very awesome)
The Hills Have Eyes (2006 remake has got to be the best horror remake ever)
Drag Me To Hell (more of a dark comedy/morality tale, but still will make you jump)

Being a horror film buff, over the years I have learned to train myself and look for only certain criteria in the horror genre in order to base my opinions. I can watch Gladiator, love it to the core for its incredible filmmaking, and then immediately afterward watch Friday the 13th VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan and still have fun with it.

That said, here's a breakdown of my more recent horror film experiences (roughly from 2003 and on):

Good
Rob Zombie's Halloween
Hostel: Part II
28 Days/Weeks Later (loved both, take your pick)
Orphan
Silent Hill
Friday the 13th (2009)
The Mist (very well made and a great kick your balls ending)
Coraline (reminded me of some of Lynch's bizarre work)
Drag Me to Hell
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake
30 Days of Night (liked the style and atmosphere a lot, end was crap)

Mediocre
The Host (gets tons of praise, but I found NOTHING to like)
The Descent (has okay moments, but the second half was awful)
High Tension (amazing first 30 mins., stumbles after)
The Amityville Horror remake (would be nice to a get a great AH one day)
The Hitcher (it's decent but very forgettable)
The Happening (didn't hate it but it was thoroughly plain)
P2
The Hills Have Eyes
The Orphanage (more of a drama, not scary, but otherwise well done)

Avoid at all costs
The Unborn (worst horror film I've seen in the past decade)
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
The Haunting in Connecticut

LOL. We watched that last weekend and it was fucking awful. There weren't even mutants in it!

Mutant Chronicles never really had mutants in it in the original source material it was based on. They basically considered anything like zombies and shit to be "mutations" instead of the mutants people think of like... xmen.

Some great suggestions, guys. Thanks, I'll probably wade through the lists and see what appeals to me. I'm starting off with Tale of Two Sisters.

I'm not against the Torture porn stuff, but it just doesn't appeal to me much. I'm definitely not planning on watching Martyrs anytime soon! I did see the Collector though, it was softcore torture porn, haha. Saw meets Home Alone (Fake Spoiler: The Collector is a grown up Kevin McAllister!).

But thanks again, and keep em coming!

lol fucking seriously....

Dude, fucking seriously. Was it as good as Carpenter's? Hell no. Was it trying to be like Carpenter's? Hell no. Was it ten fucking thousand times better than every single Halloween installment after the original? Yes, in every way imaginable.

Yeah Eden Lake is pretty chilling...especially if you live in the UK, as it could happen so easily in real life. F**king depressing as well.

Hollywood horror is in a sorry state (The Unborn anyone). But I did enjoy these two:-

The Children (and so timely with the swine flu epidemic! They should have given it a full cinema re-release to cash in! :lol

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAgCHQCF9Jo&feature=related

The Broken (with Lena Hedley for anyone with milf withdrawal symptoms following cancellation of Terminator Chronicles)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0nKZd9UxuI

And honerable mention for Doghouse. Danny Dyer and man hating Zombies. What more do you want? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8rsPuFN8wg&feature=related :lol

Do not watch under any circumstance the American rendition, The Uninvited. Atrocious beyond belief.

I liked Rob Zombies Halloween. It wasn't the original so what, glad it was. Was better than pretty much all the shitty sequels.

I thought The Mist was a great Horror film, one of the best in recent years.

I liked the Strangers even though it kinda just went through the motions, I think it was one of the more suspenseful scare flicks in a while with great atmosphere.

I liked Tale of Two Sisters. The US remake "The Uninvited" was not that good. Plus some of the atmosphere of the original was lost with the American actors.

I more thing, I love the intro music of the movie (it also plays at the end). Not sure who composed it, but it's beautiful.

Oh yes, TOTALLY THIS.

By the way, I enjoyed The Devil's Rejects as an amoral, fucked up western. Am I one of the few that may enjoy Rob Zombie's Halloween, or is it more conventional ?

Hey horror-gaf.. i have a question.. the whole torture porn topic reminded me of this movie... maybe you can help me remember what its called? Normally im very good at remembering movies and tv shows.. but this one i was a little preoccupied when i was watching it. Its not torture porn.. but the place i was at had this movie in between a bunch of Guinea Pig movies i had already seen. Anways.. here is the description as best as i can remember:

Its a Japanese or Chinese film. It involves these young adults and this one creepy loner girl who uses a VR machine to communicate with a saguaro catcus she has in her apartment. There is like some sort of chemical or disease outbreak and those that are affected get their pain/pleasure receptors flipped. One girls makes tempura from her own fingers and chows down on them to the bone. i think there is a rape scene in VR if i remember right. The ending is really strange from what i remember(maybe i just wasnt paying attention closely.. like i said i couldnt focus on what was going on in the movie so much).. it ends with the boy on top of an RV like in the middle of the Sonoran Desert and she gets on a dirt bike and starts hauling ass into the horizon.

Can anyone help me here?

Torture porn was a term invented by the media and if you believe their hype you are missing out on some fantastic movies. Martyrs, l'interieur Haute tensione etc.

Also, Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Tale of two sisters and Lady Vengeance. Oh, Cronos is good too.

I didn't like it the first time that I saw it (was the work print) but in repeated viewings I found that I do like it and look forward to the next one.
Definitely flawed but it had a throwback feel to it that I like.

No prob. I know I come into these threads and say most of the movies suck, but I least have seen them all. :lol

Speaking of, The Mist is one of the worst movies of the decade.

Absolutely.

Since you've seen the Orphanage, I assume you've already partaken of Pan's Labyrinth. If not, I'd recommend it. Not so much horror, but Dark Fantasy.

Has anyone seen Trick 'R Treat? I'm anticipating it on DVD since I'm not in the major markets when it was released.

I'm anticipating the Trick R Treat DVD/Blu-Ray release! I heard good things from online reviews and was disappointed that it never made it to theaters.

It really never got a release, just kind of guerrilla showings around the country due to studio politics and crap.
Really really fun movie though, can not wait to grab it on blu this October.

Why is everybody always hating on Halloween 2? The writing was on the wall for the series' future but I thought it was totally watchable. I enjoyed it much more than watching another by the book origin story. The second half of Zombie's Halloween wasn't so bad though.

I've seen a few lately that were pretty good.

These are on the lighter side:
Boy Eats Girl
Prom Night
Dance of the Dead
Masters of Horror: Takashi Miike: Imprint - Actually this isn't light, but whatever

These are favs of the last few years:
High Tension
Let the Right One In
Severance
30 Days of Night
28 Days Later
The Host

My favorite horror movie of the past few years is Drag Me To Hell.

Also, I really like the Amityville Horror remake with Ryan Reynolds. If what you want is a brutally violent/disturbing movie, Martyrs was good and Irreversible was great.

I like Halloween 2. But I liked the original and Rob Zombie's way, way better.

yeah right, so many haters for this film, yeah the ending wasnt great, but its one of the best monster movies in the past 5 years

No doubt, the original Halloween is the best by a mile. The main reason I'm not a fan of Zombie's film is because of the first half.

Yeah, totally understandable. It happened to not bother me, plus I really liked the Smith's Grove stuff when he's still young. Before that it's questionable, but after that IMO it's unquestionably good.

The only reason I could be wrong is that the movie sucked so much I fell asleep.

I think it's more an indication that no great monster movies have come out recently. Hell, I can't even think of any besides The Host and that wasn't good either. Cloverfield was so-so.

Don't watch Drag Me To Hell. It's not horror at all and I had to walk out an hour in because it was so bad.
Agreed it's not a horror movie. It's a black comedy. If you went in the theater thinking it was a horror, it's your fault.
And it's not bad at all. If you'd have knowned it's a black comedy and a satire when you watched it, maybe your opinion would've been different know.

Goof choice. It's more of a psychological drama, but it has portions of j-horror. But more important, the direction is good, the script is good imo and the ending is amazing.

One of my most anticipated horror movies. I've heard only good things about it on the sites i usually visit.

Rob Zombie's Halloween is one of the worst horror movies I've ever seen, which is a real shame since Devil's Rejects was so good. You want a great horror remake that easily surpasses the original, check out The Hills Have Eyes, as others have already pointed out. Friday the 13th was surprisingly good as well.

Since most of the good movies have already been mentioned (The Descent, Martyrs, [Rec], Splinter), I'll throw the Final Destination movies out there. They're not as good as a lot of movies mentioned in the thread -- or even in this post, to be honest -- but the elaborate and over-the-top kills make them such great guilty pleasures, I can't help but love 'em. Looking forward to The Final Destination in 3D.
