Awesome!! Can a MOD change the thread title?

Edit:

Disappointing that I can't select a folder on my phone to be set-up for sync! :-/

The Drive app is just a prettier Docs app.

I love new services.

Pretty sure that's a huge nerdy thing but checking out something new (even if I don't use it much) is so awesome.

Dropbox, Skydrive and Google Drive will all act as backup storages for me. Always useful to have more than one backup in a different location.

As I look at it, I'm thinking it's not really a "new" service. It's an additional feature and rebranding of Docs. They even got rid of the Docs Android app upon adding the Drive one, as well as the black bar link for Docs.

I guess that's kinda true but I'm still pumped.

Installing the windows app now.

kinda disappointed. I thought that with the big integration strategy for Google lately that this would be inclusive of everything you store at google. Your pictures in Photo/Picasa, Music in Music, etc. They had such good pricing for extra storage of those services as well... seems very ... disjointed... the only redeeming factor of it vs skydrive is android access, but skydrive blew them out of the water yesterday by dropping 25gb in for free.

Pretty sure the 25GB thing ran out long ago.

But then that almost immediately got changed to 7.

Pretty much. I was hoping to be able to access all my data through this...regardless of where it was uploaded to original (Picasa, Music, etc.).

Pretty sure ill move my Dropbox stuff over to Drive, having it tied to my Google account hopefully will make things much more convenient!

I previously paid the $5/year for 20GB of storage, like gcubed did.
Ah right.

Yea it's pretty freakin' cheap. Dropbox prices are a complete joke.

Still not seeing why this is better than Dropbox though. Dropbox gives me 12GB for free (for loads of tasks I've done) and it works beautifully.

The Google Docs app on my phone just got updated and is now Google Drive. I thought it was gonna be a separate app. Shows how much I know.

That's good news, but I still feel I should be able to manage all my files up in Google's servers from Drive.

oh, i didn't say to remove all of my complaints, just that one!

well, it appears they changed their pricing but grandfathered the space in. I haven't gone to my storage account yet to see if my renewal price changed

If you had used Skydrive previously you can opt-in to be grandfathered into 25GB. But yeah, this is underwhelming compared to Skydrvie though the added wep-app support for files is nice. Fuck Adobe formats I don't want to install that shit.

Seems like they just wanted to get this out. It's missing some key stuff. I assume they plan to do the rest of the work through updates for the next few months.

Just grabbed it.

I like how it integrates nicely with other Google services that I use ... a lot more efficient than Dropbox.

If the Drive iOS app winds up being a decent way to edit Google Docs on iPad, then this is all worth it. The app I've been using is trash.

it integrates nicely with the other Google services he uses? Dropbox is awesome, but I can see how it wouldn't fit everybody's needs.
What services?

I must have missed all the integration features because I can't see any.

got mine... seems OK. if it beats my work firewall, then that will be interesting as dropbox gets killed by it.

I use google docs for my 'serious' stuff. will keep dropbox for the dicking around nonsense and oh so important file swapping public links.

It beats dropbox in the sense that your spreadsheets etc have something to open in with a double click. If you don't have decent doc/spreadsheet editor then well, the google stuff is decent.

Why do these guys make it so cumbersome to share something? The steps required to share a photo after dropping it into my Drive folder:

1. Right click -> Share

2. It's private by default, so you have to change the permissions.

3. Choose option 2 to get a link.

4. And after saving those changes, you finally get a link to share with people.

With Dropbox, I just drop it in my Public folder and right click the file to get a link copied to my clipboard. Even if a file isn't in my Public folder, I can now right click and click "Get Link" to get a shareable URL instantly.

What's the privacy policy like? Do they look at all your stuff and close your account if something doesn't comply with a "Code of Conduct" (like Skydrive)?

edit:
Google Drive tracks every change you make—so when you hit the save button, a new revision is saved. You can look back as far as 30 days automatically, or choose a revision to save forever.

I like the sound of this.

Dropbox already has something like this.

The desktop app doesn't give you upload progress (just how many files left). Yea I'll stick with Dropbox.

Comment from Hacker News on why this is exciting:

Here's the most important paragraph in the blog post that most people will gloss over (because Google glossed over it):

"Drive is built to work seamlessly with your overall Google experience. You can attach photos from Drive to posts in Google+, and soon you’ll be able to attach stuff from Drive directly to emails in Gmail. Drive is also an open platform, so we’re working with many third-party developers so you can do things like send faxes, edit videos and create website mockups directly from Drive. To install these apps, visit the Chrome Web Store—and look out for even more useful apps in the future."

Specifically the app integration ecosystem they're creating with the Chrome Web Store is extremely interesting. There's documentation for developers here:

https://developers.google.com/drive/

Basically, you register your app against certain mime types, and then when users install your app into Chrome, they can now open those file types directly from Drive using your app, seamlessly.

It's Windows' "open with" dialogue, except on the Web. That's a big deal, because while everyone expected Drive to offer features that compete with Dropbox, this feature competes with operating systems. I think it's a brilliant move that shows Google thinking ahead and beyond what Dropbox is doing.

I also think, going forward, this will become Google's centralized storage system for users. If Google Music had launched after this, then the songs would likely be accessible there. Pichai screwed up not launching this in 2008 when it was originally supposed to come out.
