Google Fiber is coming on July 26

Look out for an announcement at google.com/fiber on July 26. Don't forget to sign up for our mailing list to be the first to know.

Watch the live stream on Youtube

Google will be rolling out its 1Gbps fiber optic infrastructure in Kansas City starting tomorrow. This will effectively make Google a competitor to Comcast, AT&T, Verizon (FiOS), etc.

I'm excited to learn that I won't be eligible to participate due to current regional cable monopolies preventing fiber infrastructure development.
But maybe I'm overly pessimistic for no reason, surprise me Google (& USA)!

would be interesting to see how long it takes them to roll out across the country. I would love a competitor where I live, there's only Comcast and really shitty Frontier DSL

I wonder, what are the logistics Google faces? I know Verizon reached a point where they've backed off and it seems like they encountered flak when trying to reach certain communities when laying down fiber.

Ok, there's no fucking way this isn't coming to Mountain View, right? I live like three blocks from Google. This has to come here... right?

I'm confused, the video in the OP says this:
Google Fiber is coming to to Kansas City on July 26. We appreciate your help and support, and we feel privileged to be part of the Kansas City community.
So they are only launching in KC tomorrow? They've been planning this for a while.

I thought it was supposed to be 1Gbps. Not that I'd complain about 400Mbps.

Ah so it is, I was basing that on a comment on Hacker News. Seems 400Mbps is the max he was able to achieve because latency of the servers, HTTP requests, etc. was greater than that of Google Fiber itself (quite the feat, actually.)

Yes it only launches in KC on the 26th based on how the blog is worded. The OP doesn't match Google's blog:

Kansas City: Google Fiber is almost here. Look out for more information on July 26th at google.com/fiber.
In less than 24 hours, we'll make a special announcement about Google Fiber. Tune in on YouTube tomorrow at 11AM CDT to watch a livestream of the event. If you want to stay up-to-date on Fiber in Kansas City, you can also follow us on Google+ and on Twitter.

Yep, OP is wrong wrong wrong.

The announcement is going to be for details of the KC implementation. It has nothing to do with national Google Fiber.

I messed up. Seems like this is only for KC then. Disappointing. :(

Their teaser page isn't very descriptive.

Brought google, so brought. Im glad everything worked fine with Kansas city. I hope it doesnt take long to roll out to nyc. All those monopolies must be shitting their pants.

Edit-damn you andrex!

Lord Google, please come to my area. You shall have all the gold in the heavens and the finest ladies of the Midwest.

Yeah this is a long long long way off from being nationwide, probably will just slowly expand area by area. Google does not have the ability to provide internet nationwide at the drop of the hat. Nationwide is years away. This will be very much a longterm beta.

The lobbyists and cronies at competing telcos will use everything short of summoning Meteor to prevent Google from being able to provide any telecommunications service that would disrupt their ability to overcharge and underdeliver.

...I hope Google gets this right and can spread this nationwide.

Please come to Knoxville.

The best internet we have (or atleast in my area) is shitty throttled comcast. I would kill for a decent internet.

I live in Overland Park and so I'm going to be extremely sad tomorrow when I learn that suburbs of Kansas City don't count as part of the Fiber deal tomorrow :(

Please please please please prove me wrong Google

Seeing as to how cable providers tend to be THE DEVIL, i welcome our new techie overlords. Please save us, Google.

I hope they leave California, New York, and Florida for last.

The rest of us should go first on this one.

/nods sagely

Fuck that, I don't want to be stuck with Crapcast forever.

Yup. I hope this DESTROYS companies like Comcast.

I think they want to test it in KC first before rolling it out in a bunch of other places, but hey, I could be wrong.
