How do I get this to work on my Galaxy Nexus. I am in the Play Store and it says "Hangouts (replaces Talk)" and then when I click on "Open" it just takes me to Talk

You have to go to the webstore to update at the moment. Find it on the play store in your browser and it'll work dandy.

I can't get this to work on my Nexus 7. It says I already have it installed. Same thing happened with my Evo 4G, but I was able to do the webstore trick to send the new app to my phone. I try the same for my Nexus 7, and it's grayed out with a little pop-up that says something like "Already installed on this device."

Lame.

Just going to post what I said in the Android thread:

So my talk app finally updated to hangouts today and... I actually like it. I can see where some of you are coming from but it is not the massive clusterfuck some people are saying, I don't think anyway. Likes and Dislikes:

Lack of SMS integration, Google have said it is coming though and the fact that it asked me to verify my phone number surely backs that up.
How the same contact shows up multiple times, this is annoying. I have linked my contacts in my people app so why can'tit link them on hangouts?

There are some nice details, I like the three dots that bounce while you wait for a message to send. I also like the little pic of the person you are talking to that shows up to let you know where they have read up to.

Overall it does feel like a beta app and it will improve over time, I wish Google would release more polished apps initially but I am sure all the feedback they get really help towards developing the app.

At least something nice came out of this.

I tried Google Hangout on my cell phone versus my Google talk on my computer. It always crashes and tells me that there is a problem with Google server side. :(

I get this error:

"Sorry! The video chat with Zain failed because of a problem with our servers at 11:16 AM. Please wait a bit and try again."

Guys I've tried. This thing sucks. I have no idea what's going on. It NEEDS some kind of online presence. Just a little icon that shows whether someone is logged in at a computer (with an invisible option), and if not, if it's running on their phone. They spent two years developing this? More like one year and 51 weeks with their thumbs up their asses and one week coding.

The web store says "installed" for me, too. The page claims that the update is being rolled out to a few devices at a time, so hopefully I can update in the next couple of days.

Hmm, anyone know how to snooze alerts separately on different devices? I'm at work now so am chatting on the Chrome app but messages keep showing up on my phone too, and snoozing the phone app snoozes the chrome app as well.

Also how the hell do I tell who on my contact list is actually online?

Getting the same issue.

Edit BBoy AJ to the rescue. Take from the other thread. The apk for the app:

.

looks really nice, but I like having an away message so I uninstalled it ( I didn't see a way to put an away message). I have my old google talk now.

Strange, I think it's rolling out slowly to all the devices. Try using the apk.

Hangouts is not a replacement for talk, Google is killing google chat and portraying Hangouts to what it thinks is next evolution in messaging. Which sucks!

I think your phone's Google Play Services needs to be updated first before this app gets push to you and replaces Gtalk.

It's what I have been saying. Gtalk will be around if you log in using a third-party client. But who knows for how much longer?

Hangouts will replaces Gtalk on all Google properties.

You can set an away message in the Chrome app, but I don't see a way to do it in the standard browser version or on the Android app.

Anyone have an issue on their phone where they still get a notification for Google talk in addition to the hangouts one? I don't have talk on my phone anymore, yet when someone messages me I'll get double the notifications because of it.

Anyone in Mexico having issues getting their SMS text verified? I set the country to Mexico and automatically sets the code to +52 then I put my number in but I don't receive the SMS. In settings there's a field displaying the confirming phone number as 01 xxx xxx xxxx (I believe it should start with +52 instead of 01).

I don't know what exactly it's doing, but when I put my number in, I never actually received an SMS. I just entered my number and instantly got a notification saying that it was verified. Maybe it's because I used my Google Voice number.

Okay, I'm thoroughly confused.

Today I finally got round to reorganising my contacts list and cutting it down to only those people who I talk to - or so I thought.

I've been through my list of contacts in Gmail and sorted that, and I've also gone through all my circles and only kept people who I talk to in those.

However, the Hangouts part of Gmail (bottom left sidebar), and the mobile app, is showing people I've never heard of, or at least don't remember who they are. Presumably they've been added on a contact import from Twitter or something like that, I have no idea to be honest.

But my question is - how do I get rid of these people from my list? I don't know where Google is pulling their info from into Hangouts, so I can't delete them. I see "Block" which doesn't seem to do anything (or if it does, they still show in chat) and "Never show in chat". Now I guess I could use that, but I'd like to find out where those contacts are coming from so I can get rid of the ones I don't talk to.

Any ideas?

Did you typed the 10 digit number only? Or added something?

Hangouts pools from your circles while Gmail chat pools contacts from your actual google talk list. Hangouts contacts are a mess.

Thanks for the replies. I've looked through my circles but I can't see these people in them anywhere. Some of them appear to be "normal" contacts while some appear to have a huge email address ending in something like "public.talk" or something - spam I assume? How they got there I don't know, I have even less idea of how to get rid of them :(

Blocking them removes them from Hangouts on PC, signing in on my phone they're still there. The supposed "frequently contacted" section is mostly made up of people I've never heard of, and there appears to be no way to get rid of them.

Edit: Blocked someone on both Google+ and Hangouts. They don't show up in search on Google+ (good). They still show up when searching for someone to start a hangout with. Why, I have no idea. What a ridiculous service. Whose idea at Google was it to add random people you've either emailed once or never heard of, and then not let you click a "I don't know this person, remove them from Talk/Hangouts/Whatever we're calling it today" button to make them disappear from the list which is supposed to contain people you actually want to talk to.

Honestly, up to now I've loved Android, the Nexus 4 and pretty much every app I've got for it. But hangouts is an absolute mess. Needs to go back to the drawing board.

Installed this and man what a mess. First it pesters me to join G+ and when I bring up the contacts list, it lists stuff like customer support or teachers I mailed years ago from my gmail account before my contacts list from my phone.
Oh well, guess I'll stick to Whatsapp and FB Messenger.

Do that many people use GTalk? Unless the SMS support that they plan on adding allows you to SMS people from your tablet I can't see a reason why I'd use this. It'd be different if G+ took off, but everyone's on Facebook and you can just use FB Messenger to IM people on there.

Facebook is blocked at work, so I use google to talk to friends at other companies every day.

Did a bit more testing on "Can I block people I don't know from appearing in Hangouts" - the answer seems to be "If you're using Hangouts from anything except your phone, then yes".

I blocked one random person who kept appearing as a Hangouts contact through Google+ on PC, and they didn't show up in:

- Google+ Search
- Goole+ search on mobile
- "New hangout" person search on PC

But, they still show up in Hangouts on Android, even though that same app lists them as blocked. I have to wonder if the app went through any testing at all before they threw it onto the Play store. What a disaster.

Anyone know how to log into another account on the Chrome extension or is tied to the account you're logged into in Chrome itself?

After suffering this app for two days, I ended up uninstalling and rolling back to Google Talk. Trust me, if you liked Talk for what it was and what it did (uncomplicated IM with all the useful options at the reach of a finger and a simple list of online contacts), you don't want this crap anywhere near your phone.

after using it yesterday and today, i really like it.

finally someone that's not straight up hating for no reason. Been using it since it was released and I've enjoyed every minute. I even managed to get my gf to switch over.
It's a bummer the emojis aren't bigger though since they're so well made. Yeah, I like emojis so what

For no reason? Shirley, you can't be serious. There are serious problems with it and people have stated why.

sounds like they have reasons.

with me, the experience was fine. 5 of the 6 top people were actually my most contacted people and while i did have some randoms from circles below, i had no issues really like others described. it just worked.

Poor wording on my part. Most of it just feels like hyperbole, though. I know about the problems and I agree wholeheartedly, but it's not the big piece of shit most people keep calling it.

Not everyone who doesn't like it is "hating for no reason", there's no need to be so defensive.

Edit: I see you addressed this. But I don't consider "adding random people you may/may not have emailed once or twice, then not letting you have a way of stopping them appearing in the hangouts app on mobile" as a good feature. If they fix that and let people easily manage their contacts lists, then maybe it'll be great, who knows.

I don't think the "WHO'S ONLINE?" is THAT fair of a criticism after using Hangouts for a bit.

I think the idea is that eventually anyone that you would want to talk to, you'll start a hangout with them and you'll have that right on the main screen when you first open up Hangouts. Maybe they could make it a little easier to tell who's online or not, but I guess Goog doesn't want to encourage people to NOT send messages just because someone isn't currently logged in.

I have email for sending messages to people offline. Talk is great because it's a tool for real-time conversations and work discussions. Hangouts is much worse for that.

Any way to get my AIM contacts from regular gtalk to this? They seem to disappear when I switch over.

Seems they broke that.

Interesting note, you still show up to other AIM users as being online, but when they message you, that message just kind of goes off into the ether somewhere, you won't get it.

My thinking is they want us to use it as Text Messaging of sorts, so the idea of being "online" doesn't exist.

Exactly. I'm sure the thought process is not that you're never online, it's that you're always online, but not always able to respond.

I like it, because I always felt rushed when I used Talk on my phone. Like I was still expected to respond as fast as I could've on my computer. So pulling it into something that feels more like SMS might scale that expectation down (or my perception of it).

I like it, but what is Evilore and and random members of the Verge staff doing in my contact list? LOL, are they pulling contacts from G+?
