Got caught with marijuana and paraphernalia

Since it's your first time, you can most likely join a drug-avoidance program in your county and avoid the court date and have the charge dropped from your record all together. 'Tis what I did.

As we were there a car shows in the distance, and gets close and then, woop woop, sirens on. Officer gets out comes around to my side.
Smells weed. Sees my bowl in the door. Asks for license. Asks me and my girl if we live around there. I say she does. And I live a little far. I ask him to leave my girl out of it, and he says ok.
Well he reads me my rights and then asks me if I know what a PTA is.
I never heard this term before. Promise to Appear he tells me. So apparently I'm arrested, but not under arrest. Have to appear in court and be tried, for second degree possession. They're gonna send me court date in mail.

How bad is this gaf?

I'd say probably not that bad in California, but I have no idea how Florida deals with it.

Yeah, that's why I wonder how hidden the OP was. Of course, I live in Colorado, so unless I smoke up in a preschool most people won't care.

You'll be fine, just stick to smoking in the privacy of your own home and only smoke in public or do burn runs when you move to a state with more relaxed regulations on marijuana.

You don't bribe the lawyer. Hire the lawyer, let the lawyer work his or her magic, pay out of your ass and poof.

Never done it with a traffic ticket before? Lets say the ticket is 150 bucks, don't just mail in the fine and take the points on your license and higher insurance like an idiot. Hire the lawyer. Take the fine and double it typically. The extra 150 is for ???. Ow my we made a mistake here you weren't speeding this was a vehicular malfunction wasn't it. No points, insurance never knows.. never happened.

Obviously this is nastier and I'm sure will be expensive but you would be surprised what can be worked out.

It'll most likely be a slap on the wrist, although you'd have been far luckier to get caught under 18, because then noone would be the wiser because you could get your records sealed. Still, no one's really going to care about this a few years down the road, most likely community service/some limited drug treatment, at most, some type of informal probation.

Yeah, never heard of anyone doing that here in Brazil, guess its just due to different judicial systems. Actually, depending of what traffic law you infringed, there are legally ways of converting you license points to some kind of donation.

How much weed were you in possession of? If it was just a small amount, you shouldn't be too worried. If you had numerous bags, then you could get "intent to sell" and be well and truly fucked.

At least that's how traffic lawyers work.

Sorry you got caught. Taking paraphernalia out of the house is a huge no-no in my set of personal weed rules.

I never take anything but a joint with me if I want to smoke in public.

99% of the time that means I'm smoking a joint on my way to see a movie or ballgame.

If you had a joint, the second the cop appeared you could have swallowed it and been fine. I keep a cigarette to mask smells if needed. I'd rather smell like cigarettes then weed.

I live in Florida too. I'm curious what you'll get. Paraphernalia is usually a harsh charge. Also, if you were caught in your car, you might lose your license for 2 years.

This is why you don't carry a pipe with you, and you break up your weed beforehand so it's easily edible.

Or, even better, you don't leave your house to do it.

And you also seem to be applying it out of the context it was intended for.
 
You're not going to jail if that's any comfort. If you had been charge with intent to sell or a felony amount, you would know because they would have arrested you for real. Since it is a misdemeanor and you're first offense, I think at worst you'll get hefty fine and 6 months probation. Maybe just hefty fines and time doing community service or some other participation. Worst part is that will probably show up on an employer background check.
 
You will probably get in more trouble with the pipe than the weed. Next time carry only joints in public and leave the hardware at home. Swallowing a joint is easier than trying to hide a pipe.
