That article on people slamming Cain brings up some interesting thoughts. I've felt some - not all - republicans are swooning over Cain so much in part because he works as a shield for their overboard, racially charged Obama hate. The fact that Cain himself has taken racial digs at Obama incites these people to like him even more.

Cain rushed out the gate to attack Perry here, which tells me he thought it was safe (and that he's auditioning for a part in Mitt Romney's campaign later on). I'd be very, very interested to see how Cain, who normally gets the loudest laughs and applause at GOP debates, would be received by the crowd if he made this attack at a debate. The story itself perfectly plays into conservative attempts to deny the existence of racism when it comes to republicans ("that's just the name, it doesn't mean anything!"). As I said, I don't think Perry is racist but clearly the sign was named with racist connotations.

And let sit there by him and his family for 25+ years.

But hey, there's no way he would've knows that he'd be running for president all these years later.

So he says the FIRST time he went there, he saw the rock, which it also states he started working in the region in 1981. That basically jives with what Perry said, right?

If anything this strikes me as the type of "casual insensitivity" in the south: being surrounded with relics of a bigoted past and refusing to throw them away, in part due to only being surrounded by similar people. Like people who still have their grandma's Aunt Jemima vases on display. Being surrounded by similar people who grew up around those old relics breeds a type of oblivious carelessness.

That's not to defend Perry, just a comment on the mindset. If Perry was a racist we would have heard something about it a long time ago.

There are varying reports about when the rock was painted over. Obviously Perry wants to distance himself from the issue as much as he can, even saying he hasn't even been to the place in 5 years. But it has been a well known part of his operation. People claim to have seen the name on the sign but don't want to be named. Decades old paint needing to be reapplied? I'd like to know what he calls it now. Apparently anyone else familiar with it still calls it by it's original name. Did he rename the ranch to something else? Would he be in trouble if he had said that name in casual public company or by mistake in front of a microphone?

He's probably not racist but this still shows a lot of apathy that I wouldn't expect of someone who wants to be in the White House. The most damning part of this article is the response Herman Cain got even though he lived during segregation and just pointed out as mildly as possible that that was an offensive thing.

It's really a sad reflection on the tea party in general. It's like that woman in one of McCain's town hall meetings during the 2008 election who assumed that Obama was an a-rab, the fact that a lot of ignorant and racist people are voting for you just makes you seem like a less desirable candidate to independents.
