That article on people slamming Cain brings up some interesting thoughts. I've felt some - not all - republicans are swooning over Cain so much in part because he works as a shield for their overboard, racially charged Obama hate. The fact that Cain himself has taken racial digs at Obama incites these people to like him even more.

Cain rushed out the gate to attack Perry here, which tells me he thought it was safe (and that he's auditioning for a part in Mitt Romney's campaign later on). I'd be very, very interested to see how Cain, who normally gets the loudest laughs and applause at GOP debates, would be received by the crowd if he made this attack at a debate. The story itself perfectly plays into conservative attempts to deny the existence of racism when it comes to republicans ("that's just the name, it doesn't mean anything!"). As I said, I don't think Perry is racist but clearly the sign was named with racist connotations.

And let sit there by him and his family for 25+ years.

But hey, there's no way he would've knows that he'd be running for president all these years later.

Karma motherfucker.

^aimed at perry obviously.

There are multiple accounts of Perry leaving it there (though it's unclear for how long exactly). So you either have to take Perry's word, or theirs.

“I remember the first time I went through that pasture and saw that,” said Ronnie Brooks, a retired game warden who began working in the region in 1981 and who said he guided three or four turkey shoots for Rick Perry when Perry was a state legislator between 1985 and 1990. “. . . It kind of offended me, truthfully.”

Brooks, who said he holds Perry “in the highest esteem,” said that at some point after Perry began bringing lawmakers to the camp, the rock was turned over. Brooks could not recall exactly when. He said he did not know who turned the rock over.

Another local who visited the property with Perry and the legislators in those years recalled seeing the rock with the name clearly visible.

“I thought, ‘This is going to embarrass Rick some day,’ ” said this person, who did not want to be named, fearing negative consequences from speaking on the subject.

Can you provide some quotes from the article that shows this? I dont have a subscription and Id be surprised if that information wasnt given on the first page if it was legitimate.

NM. I see your edit.

So he says the FIRST time he went there, he saw the rock, which it also states he started working in the region in 1981. That basically jives with what Perry said, right?

If he left it there, fuck him.

If his Dad removed it, when they first moved their and started leasing it out, than I don't know how this would affect Perry too much.

We need a clarification of the facts of when the rock was written over and whether Perry and his associates still called the ranch by that name after the rock was written over.

But the name of this particular parcel did not change for years after it became associated with Rick Perry, first as a private citizen, then as a state official and finally as Texas governor.

“I remember the first time I went through that pasture and saw that,” said Ronnie Brooks, a retired game warden who began working in the region in 1981 and who said he guided three or four turkey shoots for Rick Perry when Perry was a state legislator between 1985 and 1990. “. . . Now the Tea Party base, as racist as they are, will support Perry even more.

This says everything you need to know about the Republicans/Tea Party base when they won't denounce racism and instead attack the person who is offended by it.

And this is the kind of stuff that shows, no matter what polls say, Cain has no shot in the primaries.
But we already knew that, didn't we?

lmao, even being offended is wrong for Republicans?

Political correctness is AWESOME.

Sorry for Herman Cain, though. Even though he seemed like the "see, we're not racist - some of our best friends are..." candidate, it sucks that any goodwill he generated was scuttled by just talking about this OTHER CANDIDATE'S gaffe.

LOL. I knew Perry was gonna fumble some how. Obama's winning re-election. The GOP just has no good candidates.

Tinfoil mode on: Seems to me he never had a chance, he was brought out to counter claims that the republican base hates Obama because he is black.

"We are not racist! We have a black candidate!"

Black candidate: hey guys this rock you have on your ranch is pretty racist and offensive

"OMG race card!"

They're already circling the wagons.

I don't think Perry is racist. If anything this strikes me as the type of "casual insensitivity" in the south: being surrounded with relics of a bigoted past and refusing to throw them away, in part due to only being surrounded by similar people. Like people who still have their grandma's Aunt Jemima vases on display. Being surrounded by similar people who grew up around those old relics breeds a type of oblivious carelessness.

That's not to defend Perry, just a comment on the mindset. If Perry was a racist we would have heard something about it a long time ago.

I pretty much agree with this. Of ALL the reasons to truly despise Perry this is rather far down the list.

I don't think Perry was going to beat Romney in the primary anyway.

Fumble how? The people that would vote for Perry are probably just as racist and ignorant.

Because the GOP still wants needs the moderate vote to unseat Obama. They had the economy to point to, which was working with moderates, but now this might be enough to kill all that.

Back to your point:

So yeah, the mouth-breathers will still vote for Perry (they would no matter what the fuck he does), but now the moderates might not (who knows though).

FUMBLE!!

Who comes up with the ball?

If the Repubs had any sense in them Perry would out on the street right now, if Perry gets to the general he is gonna become mince-meat pie for Obama.

The article on Hermain Cains response to this was interesting

He meant "bald people" or "former pizza execs" or "morally corrupt politicians", obviously.

Just like Hank Williams Jr. meant Stephen Hitler!

I'm confused that people in this topic believed that Perry was going to beat Romney in the primaries.

Also how big was this rock? How easy would it be to lift it away, blast it, or do a better job of removing how ever the words were written in the rock? Writing over it, and having it still visible, is lazy if true.

It's fun to be fatalistic sometimes. I make frequent jokes about the 2012 Perry/Bachmann apocalypse.

I love how the President is supposed to be someone who has never done anything wrong in their lives... A type of person who doesn't actually exist on this planet. :P

Not that I don't think this incident is wrong or that I don't feel the schadenfreude of seeing yet another republican hopeful go down in flames :P

I think Cain is angling for a VP spot, or $60K a pop speaking engagements for the next 10 years, whichever comes quicker. Presidential runs are good business. Maybe he could bring Godfather's Pizza back east.

There are varying reports about when the rock was painted over. Obviously Perry wants to distance himself from the issue as much as he can, even saying he hasn't even been to the place in 5 years. But it has been a well known part of his operation. People claim to have seen the name on the sign but don't want to be named. Decades old paint needing to be reapplied? I'd like to know what he calls it now. Apparently anyone else familiar with it still calls it by it's original name. Did he rename the ranch to something else? Would he be in trouble if he had said that name in casual public company or by mistake in front of a microphone?

He's probably not racist but this still shows a lot of apathy that I wouldn't expect of someone who wants to be in the White House. The most damning part of this article is the response Herman Cain got even though he lived during segregation and just pointed out as mildly as possible that that was an offensive thing.

It's really a sad reflection on the tea party in general. It's like that woman in one of McCain's town hall meetings during the 2008 election who assumed that Obama was an a-rab, the fact that a lot of ignorant and racist people are voting for you just makes you seem like a less desirable candidate to independents.

This word is probably still commonly used among Perry's core base, so this is likely seen as a positive to them.

And lol @ the apologists. They're always out there, encouraging geniuses like ^ and @southernxcross1 to spread their ignorant wings and fly.

You don't have to be perfect.

But you should at least be a decent person.

Let's say YOU bought a house. And there was a big sign at the end of the driveway that read NIGGER. Honestly, how long would it take you to remove it?

Years?

A president should be a decent enough person that he would have done something about it, if only because it offended him.

His family obviously had money for paint, a brush or two. Or heck, just flip the damned rock.

It sat for YEARS.
