GPU Art? WTF

My XFX came in the standard box which is pretty sexy, IMO. Thick cardboard, embossed stuff, quite subdued box design - it just screams expensive and well made product inside :lol

Just knowing this stuff passed through meetings and PowerPoint slide shows before it went to the manufacturer is mind boggling.

Nothing screams badass like some creepy hairless dude with a blue plate in his hands.

And for the ladies, forget about dem alloy rims mofo, just show them your dusty gpu box in your room.

That XFX armored bulldog looks like some Rareware artist suddenly had a chunk of his brain spooned out with an ice-cream scoop whilst modeling it.

But seriously, is this what happens to lolvideogamesartists when they can't land a job in an actual studio? GPU companies snatch them up?

While still pretty tacky, my ASUS 4850 could have been a lot worse.

I've got a new cooler on it now, so it's no biggy. Not that it really is in the first place, unless you have a window on your case :lol

So far I've got:

Dog with green mask:

Basic body model with metallic texture and flashy eyes:

At least you never have to see the art in the card itself because it's always facing down

A Sleek, eloquent and refined package, ready to blow your mind once you take of the wrapping, just Like a $5000 hooker.

Really? I know I can cross this card off my list thanks to Nirolak.

I just want to emphasize that this is a $700 video card (650 at newegg). A 700 fucking dollar piece of technology with shitty ass sticker art. Clearly evidence of the ineptitude of marketing.

I can live with shitty boxes, it's the shitty cards themselves that drive me nuts.

If you're spending time looking at the image printed on your graphics card and not the one on your monitor, you're doing it wrong.

i still don't understand why ati and nvidia don't sell their cards directly? as far as i can see the only difference between these weird brands is the shitty cg on the box and the sticker on the plastic thing covering the card.

It's really a shame no video cards come with a decent cooler. Well the Vapor-X stuff and Twin Frozr are semi-decent, but they don't hold a candle to a nice Accelero setup.

i guess I am a cheese ball, I have always loved the cheese on the boxes

just got this one

not any worse than a Dragon Age character?

My box was pretty tame, but still has Generic CG Woman.

She shows up on my 5770 box, too, plus her face is on the fan.

If a company invested some time and planning into their CGI mascots, it could actually be a way to simplify card purchases for the casual. Create four or five characters, enough for the different models of a given product line, then designate one as the 'high-end' character, one for mid-tier, one for bottom-of-the-line, etc. Differentiate between lines using costume color, or something, so that character X in silver is generally the high-end option for previous generation tech, things like that. It can't be any more confusing than random numbering and lettering systems, and would give the manufacturer a way to argue that their cards are more consumer-friendly and thus deserving of more shelf space.

Not that anyone does that, that I know of, so I have no idea why nobody branches out to peaceful nature scenes or something to stand out from the crowd. The better gaming graphics get, the sadder the box-art CGI starts looking.

Well the original post has one current card and the rest are very old.
I think we are making at least some progress.

Someone make it happen with the troll fingering the green doughnut.

Also, that 7600 is not old enough to justify that hair doo.

Sigh. The stock cooler on this thing is pathetic. I have two of these exact cards and can't stress them or else they overheat after a few minutes. I also can't seem to get the front plastic part off (even after removing the screws)...it's like it's superglued.

Well other then the Iron Man style giant robot on the card itself
which I like because it remind me of Total Annihilation
The box itself for my card is pretty nice (also what you wouldn't be able to tell from that image is the box is holographic :D).

i always bought XFX cards and i was really disappointed when i found out that there's no dog with a green mask on the GTS 250 box :lol
