GPU Art? WTF

I worked on PC chopshop for 8 years and these arts humored all the workers. There was some Asus "platinum" versions that had decent retail boxes.

Club3D has skipped this route and went on black simple boxes. I guess theyre bit cheaper because of this matter :

fix your contrast. or meet more black people.

You realize white people can have that skin tone too, right? Shit, we're not all milky looking.

Edit: And in regards to meeting "more" black people, I live in Fort Pierce, FL, in school I was the minority, and my uncle is from the Bahamas! :lol

Remember the 3Dfx Voodoo arts? Faces.

I actually think these were much more stylish than the random CG fantasy/scifi model on most boxes these days. The eyes were pretty cool, and color-coded to differentiate between models.

My first card. Not technically my first GPU, but the first one I purchased on my own, after carefully analyzing prices and performance.

Then went for this and flashed it to a 6800, I was pretty ballsy back then. Had I fucked up the process I would have wasted $200+ dollars.

Then started being a true baller, finally spending over $200 on a GPU.

Then I broke the $300 barrier, and got a sweet asus 3870x2.

Then I got separated from my wife, so I treated myself to this baby:

Finally, the 4870x2 broke up and since I was such a nice NewEgg customer, they gave me this:

I have owned other cards in the way, but I am not counting hardware I owned for less than a month or borrowed as temporary while I waited for the release of better hardware.

Fuck nostalgia. The GTX 295 is the best card I have ever owned. I got a second one, but my power supply isn't good enough to hold two, so I only installed it once to finish Crysis (good fps, but my machine wasn't stable at all).

I became a huge fan of HIS' OC'd cards. So quiet and efficient. Great built in fan. I have a 4850 IceQ Turbo card at the moment and plan to get another HIS card of this type next time I buy a PC.

awesome funny art in this thread, cannot believe i passed it up all day until now.

I noticed that some of the low end cards had more powerful looking art than their big brothers and sisters.

Its the only packaging that looks professional as well.

Ya know, when I typed up my OP I kinda had something like this in mind as what I wanted. Than I saw it and realized I don't trust the quality of a GPU that isn't branded with a Cyber Mage or a Samurai Gladiator Dog. Fucking 180. Must be some kind of conditioning over the years.

I'm fond of the box art used for the XFX ATI Radeon HD 4850:

It has good art, great interior packaging and the card is very well built. Has a fan that directs air toward the back of the case and keeps it really cool (around 38 degree Celsius idle and around 60 degrees Celsius under load).

I wonder who will be on the 6000 series!

That looks like ATI's Ruby:

Here's the Silicon Zoo.

Enjoy the many and varied creatures and findings hidden in the etchings on processors :)

Fantastic thread. I've a couple of terrible boxes in my spare room from various motherboards. My currently flakey XFX 5770 was in a very subdued box for them and it's the XXX version so you'd expect them to lay on extra cheese. Oh well.

I was about to make a thread about the same topic.

Instead of fugly images on the GPU's and the boxing, Why can't they use pics from the hottest upcoming game?

That would be (un)covert advertising.

If a company invested some time and planning into their CGI mascots, it could actually be a way to simplify card purchases for the casual. Create four or five characters, enough for the different models of a given product line, then designate one as the 'high-end' character, one for mid-tier, one for bottom-of-the-line, etc. Differentiate between lines using costume color, or something, so that character X in silver is generally the high-end option for previous generation tech, things like that.
How about the bigger boobs on the generic cgi woman on the box, the more powerful the card is?

Or you could have a really ugly girl on the low-end cards, then the prettier they get the better the cards are.

What's the problem? I am sure any publisher would love seeing their game publicized with a good GPU plus gamers can relate more.

Maybe use pics from the game it is bundled with- if it's a looker.

Mine seems to have a bald mime on it (or the top half of a zebra woman?). I'm not sure what this is meant to signify :S

(BTW yes I do need an upgrade)

The marketing departments think their customers are really juvenile. I hope they aren't right. PC gaming has matured since 1995 as the PC gamers themselves aged.

The first gfx card that I bought. I bought it for a pentium 120mhz back in 1996 and the computer and gfx card are still working fine.

I thought that's how it worked. You mean I shouldn't be buying cards for the CG rack on the box?

why is xfx full of furry box arts?

list of graphics cards i owned

Geforce 2 mx (Best card ever created)
Geforce 5200 (biggest piece of shit)
Geforce 6600GT (should of gotten a 6800 =()

ATI 4890 (Power Hungery Loud Sexy son of a Bitch)

The art on the cover is probably having zero influence over the consumers. PC gamers for the most part know what they are buying in the first place when they shop for GPU.

Actually if you actually go to a retail store and see the boxart then you probably don't know what your buying. Last time I went to Best Buy they where selling 6600gt's for 200$.

I think it should be a bannable offense to be talking mad mess about Palit's Robofrog.

I remember the outrage in the gpu enthusiast community when they tried to retire him recently. :lol

This thread is awesome.

I'd not bought a card in a long time. I went from this:

to this:

I was not expecting the card to be so damn ugly:

i just realised these are all game character designs rejected by either Rare or Namco because they were almost too good.
