"Customisation options, however, are limited, especially in the wake of Forza 3's more comprehensive efforts. Beneath the skin it's detailed enough with several layers of upgrades that can be applied, (although, strangely, it's no longer possible to upgrade a car's brakes) but beyond that there's little else that can be done; "
lol wut :lol

Sorry if this has been asked a million times. I just got the game and won my first race. Yay! But there is a a dotted line that has all the turns and braking and shit which is kind of annoying. How do I turn that off? I checked the options and I don't see anything.

For me, this is the Holy Grail of driving games. [...]plug a good force-feedback steering wheel into your PS3 and the game is transformed. This is undoubtedly the best way to experience the phenomenal physical handling model. [...]Gran Turismo has a reputation for sterility which it really doesn't deserve. If you know cars and know where to look, there's passion and fantasy and even humour here. And most significantly, there's variety.

This is where GT5 trumps both its predecessors and its rivals. You see, the heart of the game has moved. It's no longer in the GT Mode, despite its improved pace, nor the tuning screen or parts shop. It's certainly not in the vestigial licence tests which are still there but no longer serve much purpose, Polyphony finally having given in and implemented a simple, sensible levelling system to unlock cars and events instead. The game's heart is in those Special Events. [...]It's a more impressive achievement than 1000 cars; this one section of GT5 communicates the spirit of motor racing in all its forms better than any other game.
Agree, agree, and agree.

People here that have the game have already pointed out (and posted pics) that there are brake upgrades. :(

lol indeed.
That and a few other things in that review are just so wrong. I bet that guy jsut skimmed through this thread, copied a bunch of early impressions and paraphrased everything into a 'review'.

With Gran Turismo 5, I found myself doing something I've never done with a racing game before: driving simply for the joy of it. Just as with a great car, Gran Turismo 5 feels so great that it begs to be driven. You can't put it down. I found myself cruising the 8.5 miles of Circuit de la Sarthe this week just to enjoy the drive. I found that when you get in the zone and really get in tune with the controls, this game really does let you tap into the pleasures of driving and racing. I'd like to imagine that Polyphony Digital has spent all this time fine tuning this game for this very feeling. [...] The level of care taken by the people at Polyphony Digital shines in every aspect of this title, and this makes for a racing game that truly has no parallel. Gran Turismo 5 is a massive love letter to those that love cars. This is their dream videogame.

JESUS TIRE PHYSICS NO LONGER EXIST !!!!!!!

Locked front brakes and the car can only go straight as it should

WOOOO!!!

...thats all I cared about.

Gran Turismo 5 has changes the way I see racing games, it has taught me to when choosing a car every aspect matters, whether it’s the weight, spring, model, speed isn’t always what you should look for. Graphic developers have reached another visual achievement that will make you believe there are no limits to what they can do. Design and Feature wise everything is brilliantly put together and you can see why it took 5 years for this game to be release. Game-play comes together very well and sets a new learning curve for old and new drives of the series. Replay ability…If you can finished game which I believe to be impossible at the moment, then you’ll play it over and over again. Some people may disagree, but I honestly found nothing wrong with this game. So after you have had your thanksgiving meal with the family, I suggest you enjoy some GT5. Play standing up to burn more calories, and take breaks when need. Five years was a long time, but it was well worth the wait.

Why are they comparing the game to fuckin NFS: Hot Pursuit?

Graphics Are Not That Good
For a game that is five years in the making, the graphics of Gran Turismo 5 surprisingly does not have the best graphics I’ve seen this generation . If NFS: Hot Pursuit is to be compared with Gran Turismo 5, it will be obvious to the gamer that Hot Pursuit’s graphics are superior to Gran Turismo 5.

so I'll just have to do photomode tricks like motion blur to mask some of the last-gen primitivism.

:lol So I wasn't the only one who noticed that.
.

Iknos.. are you going to take the high road again, now that the game has launched..?`or are you going to follow in che´s footsteps..?

15 (or so) hours at the most till the courier comes. I think what I'll do is go rent out a copy as early as possible, fully install the game, patch it, return the game to the rental store, and wait for my own copy to come. :D

From Metro GT5 review:

Cons: Artificial intelligence is still not top draw and damage modelling is equally limited. Minor graphical issues. Still very little to interest non-petrolheads.

THAT'S THE POINT OF THIS GAME. Did they see the "we love cars" commercial? This game is built by car enthusiasts FOR car enthusiasts.

It's for petrolheads...not for people who want to shoot missiles out of their cars or cause crashes and blow things up.

I think I'll stop looking at reveiws now...so many awkward expectations from reviewers.

Next someone will say "lack of police cars" or some crap like that. :lol

Ahhhhhhhhhh I need to get more sleepy so I don't stay up all night tossing and turning.

Right about what? The game is scoring well.
Haven't you heard, scores of 7 and 8 mean that it is average at best in this day and age.

Kidding of course, just poking fun at this strange opinion that if a game doesn't get 9s or 10s then it is the end of the world for some or a grand victory for the "opposition".

I don't get it either...I also don't pay attention to reviews but I get a good laugh out of the reactions. :D

are there any major reasons to get gold/silver on the licenses? I'm trying to have willpower to stay the course, but part of me thinks 'fuck it, just get bronze and get on with the events'

any killer cars?

will probably have to wait until the weekend before I can get the wheelstand/DFGT out, then I'll also try the headtracking and 3D (hopefully both work together)

From amar's impressions

Also, greatest improvement is done in realms of racing cars, where Kazunori finally reached the levels of his only inspiration, Yu Suzuki's masterpiece F355 Challenge.

A bit late with my reply, I know. (I went to bed after my last post ;) )

But thank you so much for that reply.
Funny to see someone else bring up F355 like that. :D

I had absolutely no idea that Kazunori looked to F355 as inspiration. That really blows my mind!
It's the most important aspect of the game for me.
Screw shadows, "premium/standard" tracks and all that stuff people obsess about or try to bring the game down with. I just don't care.
All that matters is the gameplay and to finally have a racer that approaches F355 levels is something I didn't think we'd see again.

Just ordered my own copy. :)

I confirm, and I salute you.

After reading ign review i can't stop laughing. You know, numbers are important to the masses. Saying it's a perfect simulator but that presentation, small inconsistencies and supposedly poor IA are bringing the game to 8'5 is just laughable.

I spent 6 hours with the game and i’ll share my opinions with you.
I can safely say that the game is GREAT. I’ve browsed all the categories, made some license tests, some a-spec events, and arcade races, both with premium and standards, as well as checking the course maker.
First of all, the most important thing: driving feels VERY good. I used both my g25 and the pad, and well, g25 is much better, but pad was perfectly fine and fun too.
Graphically the game is a beast (98%) with some inconsistencies (2%).
Sound is spot on. More powerful and with more variety. Vacuum cleaner is gone.
The standard/premium debate has been so big that i was expecting to see cardboard cars in my gt5, and this is completely false. Many times you won’t be able to tell if a specific car is standard or premium. Obviously if you go to photomode and look for jaggies you will find them. I checked closely +- 30 random standards from my psp import and i didn’t find any horrible model. While obviously they don’t have the same quality, i think the game would have less value with only the premiums.
Karting and rally are particularly fun and fresh.
The course maker has some depth, and thanks to the randomizer button (“new circuit” button) tons of replayable layouts will surface quickly. I didn’t see the point to point option, but courses can be very long, allowing for nice 1 lap rally tracks.
Photomode is easy, powerful and produces perfect results with premiums and good results with standards.
Online was solid and the lobby system is very well thought.
From my first impressions, the game is a 10 in my book, because it has the fundamental things done right: solid gameplay, variety in tracks (when you weight in the course maker), variety in cars (even if you only plan to use premiums), a deep and demanding SP (if you plan to gold everything), and the possibility to grow an online community much more cohesive than with your typical fps.
Take note that if you are waiting for perfection you will be disappointed, because there are small flaws here and there. I won’t extend on those because they are very magnified by nit-picky reviewers and gamers.
If you are able to start the game with a fresh mind, most probably you will be delighted.
Conclusion: i saw basically the same game as IGN but my ponderation of elements is different: i favour core gameplay and core graphics over interface and small inconsistencies.

I'm of the opposite opinion. I always thought GT was for everyone. Anyone can go to a garage or dealership and go "Ohh that's my car!", drive it round a race track, which is something people hardly get the chance to do, and push it to it's limits without consequence. Why do you think GT has had a preference to suburban vehicles over racecars? It's so that it gives the player something to relate to. That's the way I see it anyway.

Its like some of you guys have never heard a car in real life. amazing.

Hmm looking at the reviews it seems we are playing a different game, particularly online. Has anyone here experienced lag? It's been butter smooth for me so maybe I've just been very lucky but I do agree on it needing more options. Some fucking leader boards would be nice.

Got my copy as soon as Sainsburys opened this morning.

Now I need to figure out how I can convincingly fake my own death to get out of work.

My sincere apologies if this has been touched upon earlier (I have been keeping up with the thread) or in reviews (skimmed a couple), but I have a specific question about online racing.

Do you get credits (or whatever it's called) and/or driver XP for leveling up when racing online?

Thanks!
