Dear sweet crimminy christ in holy heaven.

Why does the grass and road look better than real life in this pic

But not so sexy in others? Is this really an in game pic of GT5 or just a regular picture of a car?

Look at the grass, as someone else pointed out there's an obvious mirror effect. Shaders baby. Shader godliness.

It can't possibly look like that can it? can it? I really dont know what to say. I guess im just waiting for the other show to drop. IN-****ING-CREDIBLE

I see you've never been to London. ;-)

Actually I have, many times. Just never paid attention to the more modern buses...

Anyway, in the two (Getaway & GT5) screenshots posted, nothing is identical. Nothing.
Not even the street lights (in GT5, they're missing little "spikes" at the top).

They could've edited some of the models though. Also, both screenshots show two totally different locations.

when i looked in the .zip file from sony's press site and saw .mov, i became quite angry.

Why? The .mov is just a container for a PS3-compatible MP4. Open it in Quicktime, and export (pass-through) as an MP4. Takes about 10 seconds...

Shaders? :lol

:lol

To answer the question, the texture was taken from a reference pic, that was taken directly above the grass. Looking at that texture from any angle other than directly above and it doesn't look as good. For a game like this, the main thing is to get the colors right. Most racers aren't looking at the grass, and besides there are sprites to help make the grass look 3D, if one decided to look at the grass.

My sarcasm detector is picking up a signal based on the excessive amount of exclamation marks. I do hope it's working right ;o

Still can't believe it. Looks amazing. The lighting in this game is incredible, and the normal mapped cars look so smooth and... non game like :lol

They must have some sort of individual lighting engineers working on the engine, like bioshock have with water, to get it looking that good.

DO WANT!

PGR4 and GT5 are very different, from what i've seen i tend to consider PGR4 very, very, very impressive from a technical pov (that is, assuming the trailer entirely consists of realtime graphics, and the game has the same IQ). It really looks like good CG at times.
GT5 on the other hand is much much more photorealstic. However i wouldn't consider this 'universally better' nor directly related to better technical performances.
I would put them roughly on the same technical level, point is they use resources for very different purposes.

Amen.

And well, Forza 2 on the other hand could have looked much better : P

While they look good, they don't look like real life. You guys gotta get to the track more. Or just look down at a road...

Lol now its gotten to this, "While they look good, they dont look like >insert another huge racing title<

Now we're comparing to real life :o!!??

One thing to remember, however, is that PGR4 is 30 fps while GT5 will be 60 fps.

Of course, Pgr4 on the other hand has those weather effects and i assume better trackside detail, although it appears that this iteration of GT is no slouch either in that dept.
Overall i'm very pleased with sony showing this E3, i'll definately grab a ps3 in sept.

Hmmm, the city track in the vid look probably even more impressive than in the forza games, but it will remain to be seen how it looks when playing...as for weather effects, I though GT 5 was going to have those

Quite frankly... The yellow Dodge Viper screenshot looks pretty meh too me. I don't see the good lightning everybody claims. Nice DOF effect...

The other ones look really good :)

No trolling there. Just my opinion. I look at it and doesn't bring me the feeling of realism other screenshots of the game transmit.
I was quite confused when reading some of the opinions of the people here regarding that shot.

The Dodge Viper screenshot looks like one of the only shots taken from gameplay (notice the shadow artefacting under the side mirror missing from other shots). Take off some of the post processing and AA and you'd have a realistic idea of how the game looks at the moment.

The problem with that shot that it gives no sense of speed. That's all.

Most of the shots are taken in a way that they minimise or shouldn't have any self shadowing, probably on purpose. However, if you want to go by that logic, here are screenshots which also have shadow artefacts:

Check the yellow Elise

Pretty obvious on the F430

Back seat

Check the font grille on the Skyline

In the press pack there are three types of screenshot. (1) 3840x2160 captures likely the same type of replay source material for the trailer, (2) 1080p captures probably photo mode includes; White F430, Mustang and Z4, (3) 1080p car select framebuffer screenshots. All 3 types feature shadow aliasing in at least one of their images. Not that it's worth mentioning, but also check the fences in pretty much every shot. Polyphony basically made a rolling press shot.
