GRIN blames Square-Enix for the death of its studio, exposes S-E incompetence

My FFXIII clock says 72 hours so far. Not the greatest game ever, but the battle system redeems jRPGs.

Battle and subsystems in XIII are almost entirely non-interactive pap. They had their goal for that game right with X-2, which didn't automate nearly every function and had a proper class system and customization and didn't attempt to handheld in a legendary fashion.

What a disappointing bit of news -- as a huge FF12 fan, I had been holding out hope that Fortress might finally be released at some point, and now reading about how it was cancelled is like salt in the wounds.

Seriously, Square? Not recognizing Isamu Kakikokuryō's concept art for the very game that you've contracted a spin-off for?

I like those landscapes; that's what appealed to me so much about FFXII. Huge open spaces; beautiful nature that stretches to the horizon.

For some reason that rock jutting up out of the sea in that second screenshot looks amazingly like the Tatigami-iwa (たてぃがみ岩; 'standing god rock') off the coast of Yonaguni, in Okinawa.

I wonder if the Grin developers ever went there. Then again, there are probably thousands of such rocks in the world's oceans.

Making FF a WRPG would certainly mark the end of FF for me.

They already had WRPG FF game it was XII and it was good. They just need to improve upon it, by getting some help from Obsidian.

I mostly wonder what XII would've turned out like if Matsuno had more control and wasn't ejected. Either way, it was pretty decent stuff as is, just needed some more polish and reiteration. Square seems more than happy to waste huge swaths of development time tossing out perfectly functional concepts and redesigning things for the worse though.

After XIII and XIV though, I'd just be happy with something that wasn't a complete catastrophe.

Well they were almost dead when the FF project came around i guess SE kill them.
Still SE sound like a nightmare to work with , let hope Versus is good .
Well there always type -0 for now.

Andersson's just generating some good old-fashioned tabloid publicity before his new outfit, Supersledge, hits the E3 funding trail. Guess they're not expecting a visit from Square!

One more thing about the faxing: when are Japanese companies going to finally put the fax machine in history's dustbin? Faxes became big in the 1980s when, for a typical individual or small company, it wasn't trivial to type and store Japanese text electronically. It made sense to just write stuff by hand and then fax it. Today, though, everyone has a computer with Japanese fonts and many possible encoding methods. Any manager or company that centers his communication around the fax is woefully behind the times.

(Protip: if you're job-hunting in Japan and your potential employer demands that any communication be done by fax, or ever criticizes you for not having a fax in your home, take that as a warning sign.)

Geologically, those are called "stacks"

A particularly cool one is Rockall, because it's nowhere near land.

This is why XIII was so disappointing. They had a good thing going with XII and then bam, crap.XII was the only FF game I enjoyed in a long time, they just needed another game to polish it, it even took two tries for KOTOR to get truly great.

How the mighty have fallen, Square isn't even worth mentioning anymore these days. Their last good game was FFXII, a shame they refuse to work with that formula anymore, they struck gold with that one.

So, to test the waters at Square a bit, and to see if it was even paying attention, GRIN sent it some concept art from taken straight from Final Fantasy XII .

The Anderssons were told: “It does not look like Final Fantasy.”
You can't make this shit up.

I would agree, actually.
Except the game they were working on was set in the same world as FFXII.

Besides, suit porn is the new hotness. It's like a Nolan film in the Versus trailers.

EDIT: In regards to the claim, I'm sure it was a rocky relationship, but GRIN were an awful studio, I feel like it was inevitable and they were spreading themselves too thin too quick.

Nope, it's bloody and battered females. eg. The Samus redesign thread, Mortal Kombat and more relevant to SE, PE3 and Lara Croft reboot.

edit: Also SE is right about FF12 though. It doesn't look like a FF. Doesn't excuse their treatment of Grin if true though.

Square not recognizing their own concept work is pretty bad, then saying it looks nothing like Final Fantasy(what does that even look like?) is even worse.

He's trying to not-so-subtly imply that FFXII doesn't look like a series of games that change their look with each iteration.

I wish this was not the case but I agree with you completely. FFXII didn't feel like a Final Fantasy to me but it was non the less a great RPG.
How can you not recognise you're own work. That's embarrassing.

Square just feel like a bunch of students that make b-movies.

Not sure why they didn't do it. You can fax compiled code and music just as easily as text, it'll just look like gibberish on the other side. Whenever manager makes an obviously shitty demand of you and refuses to listen to logic, satisfy the demand and let them get hoisted by their own petard.

Yeah let's fax a truck load of pages of code.

'Haha, oh wow' indeed.

Sounds like SE just wanted to have something to point at and say "Hey! we actually tried that! well you can't blame us, we tried at least."

This is probably exactly what happened.
Wada probably wanted a FF game made by a Western studio, and whichever department was in charge of handling the process (most likely some senior staff who handled FF games in the past) did not want it to be done, felt betrayed and so on, so they did everything they could do to tank the project, and it worked.

Can you imagine all the toner/ink needed, Good Lord, heaven forbid someone else tried to fax SE, they would be in the queue for weeks

1 thing was the 3 games mentioned aren't retail priced games. Asking $60 for Wanted was LOLWTFRUSRIUS?, the games had budget written all over them, and should have been priced accordingly

$19.99-$29.99

That would have helped out, I mean at least they would have stayed afloat and not capsized themselves by ramming their ship directly into an iceberg purposely

Square has become complete garbage. I'm glad the FF series wasn't revived by an awesome game like this, because honestly, at this point, it doesn't even deserve it. Hope to see them fade into irrelevance after such an act of disrespect as this.

I felt like he was saying it didn't fall into the Nomura zipper/belt mold.

Potshot at the end and use of the word retarded makes them look foolish. Square Enix may have just been the spear throw that finally knocked them into the ocean of sharp rocks they were standing over for awhile. Just terribad management at GRIN IMO, seems like they were made for each other. I hope Eidos continues to manage well with SquareEnix, god I do.

Like a GRIN game was going to be awesome or revive something thats not dead.

Man square enix is a shitty company. I'm kind of glad Grin's ivalice game didn't make it out though, as much as I love the setting.

Er, yeah, but would it not be easier to dump everything into an encrypted 7-Zip archive and e-mail it?

Fax is sloooooow.

Makes no sense.

Ultimately the loss of the FF game was only the nail in the coffin for Grin. They lost some other big projects shortly before that in wake of their underperforming games and the begin of the economy crisis.

Man.
That's... Wow.

Wow Square is as absurd as we all knew/thought.

I'd guess 90% of that is probably accurate.

Also did not help GRIN shit out some garbage before they closed...

Square Enix will be bankrupt soon.
I just want to play Versus before they cease to exist.

Then they can disappear.

What a joke they are, unable to recognize their own work. There's not a LOL smiley big enough for that. Epic. fucking. fail.

If it's the legal department maybe they don't know anything about games.
Any competent legal department for a developer (especially so for a publisher) knows everything there is about game production, especially code and how it works given how many different license types there are for publicly available code.

Having played nearly all of GRIN's games I have to take this with a pinch of salt. They made absolutely terrible games every step of the way.

Fuck that SE is a cancer. I would trust Nintendo to handle CDProjekt Red better then ever trusting SE

Yeah, S-E can't be trusted anymore. Do you really want these clowns remaking FFVII or doing a new Chrono game? Hell no. That ship has sailed, the magic is nearly gone and there's no legitimate reason to want to see that happen anymore. Unless, of course, you are stuck in the past.

It's still mind-blowing that people are actually asking for a FFVII remake knowing the current state of business of S-E...
