Grubb/EvilBoris: Xbox Auto HDR is one of nextgen's coolest features

I've tested auto-HDR in a number of backward compatible games on a preview version of the Xbox Series X hardware. And it's a big benefit. Every game I tested maxes out at 1,000 Nits, which is a measure of luminance. When it comes to HDR, 1,000 Nits is a gold standard for the bright highlights in an image. HDR expert Adam Fairclough, @EvilBoris on Twitter (who you should follow), helped out with this by grabbing a heatmap of some of my HDR footage. Check it out!

This is my first post here, I used to be a pc gamer back when I had time to invest...

But now with work, wife and etc... I've sold my pc to my uncle last year and im planning on getting a xbox now.. ms got me hyped to the level of the ps2 launch

Bc and hdr improvements are the biggest selling point after gamepass FOR ME, since I skipped entire generations of xbox exclusives

i could argue it's not really a next gen feature since it's for bc !

edit : frustration to not see next gen games from MS got the better of me

XSX definitely stands out as a great machine to play current/previous gen games, but MS will have to up their game and include some next gen gameplay in these previews, cause so far they are lacking.

In the next couple of weeks hopefully.

Fantastic feature. This and quick resume are probably the two most interesting features of the Series S/X.

I'm watching the video as I'm writing this and it's quite impressive technology.

But will it work on gtav? That game has been seriously needing a one x enhancement patch for ages now. No 4k or higher res textures no HDR, for a game that makes them so much money they neglect the ever living hell out of it.

My display I am using at work isnt HDR. Is this video actually uploaded in HDR for screens that support it?

This is a nice feature.

I'd sure like Sony to talk more about their BC now, what will work on launch, what's boosted, what the boost entails. No mention of anything like this so far, which makes me think it probably isn't a thing on the other side. Granted they also surprise patched the OG PS4's with HDR support so developers who wanted HDR could have patched for it already.

This looks really neat. I will definitely check this out on an HDR display ASAP but the heat maps implemented look to be well calculated.

Auto-HDR will work on all the BC games, unless BC testers decide it is stands in the way or diminishes developers' original vision. Or simply doesn't look good - so far it is known that FalloutLV won't have auto-HDR.

Anyway, I watched both videos that show auto-HDR footage and it is indeed amazing.

These system level features that MS are showing are arguably more important than showing next gen games to a large extent IMO. We know that there will be plenty of new games coming from the Xbox Studios and although not available at launch will definitely start coming from a year or two into the console's life and continue from there. These cool system level features that MS are showing though are going to be there through the entire life of the console and will be as valid at the start of the gen as they will be at the end long after the buzz of the launch game line up fade. Once we are a couple of years in the launch games will look very dated.

launch games are for Christmas
system level features are for life

This is not machine learning as far as I know, this is just translation to higher brithness by heatmaps? Well maybe AI generates heatmaps, but I am not exactly sure, why that would be needed.

Also youtube doing some super weird shit with HDR on macBook, before it was tonemapped and now it dims everything around the video and video itself is overblown to hell.

Edit: Appearantly my MacBook have HDR display, so well....it does not look good at all.

Some people are on Xbox's jock strap so much that they're literally creaming over features that aren't even focused on, you know, next gen games.

Wow! Fake HDR! Wow! Improved performance! My 10-year-old games will look better than ever!

Weird idea, but how about we get a next gen system that is focused on next gen games. Wild, right? Because if I wanted to play old games, I'd just ... play them now.

The heat maps were not part of the AI. That was added by a third party to demonstrate what the image is doing.

This is an awesome feature, no ifs or buts.

Currently playing MGS4 through PS Now and it's painful. Shocking resolution. I'd kill to play it with these kinds of enhancements.

Can't wait to experiment with it next month.

That's not it at all. It's that you're buying a next gen system for current and old games. It's well within your right to be stupid with your money, but XSX (as of right now) is basically an emulator, which can be done more affordably on PC.

Well I was talking about how it brings HDR to SDR games in the first place, I thing DF said that it's done by creating heatmap in frame buffer and then run some predetermined brigthness value for certain amount of luminosity from that heatmap.

Well I am wrong it's using some Gears 5 HDR implementation interpreter, not sure why would you need machine learning, it seems like some value table would be far less buggy, however I am obviously not an expert.
