Guy Fieri is sick of Bourdain's shit

Wow, glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read that.

Bourdain is an asshole, but he's a genuine asshole. People tend to like and flock to those.

Fieri is a nice dude but he's an easy target.

This is true. It also doesn't help that Fieri is a coporate shill, people can at least respect Bourdain even though he's an asshole.

The hilarious part is people defending noted asshole Anthony Bourdain against known decent guy Fieri because of the way Fieri dresses on TV.

For real.

Bourdain traipsing around in jeans marveling at how the country has changed. And the food? It's good. Wow. Mmm. That's the good stuff.

To take this topic seriously though...

Bourdain has probably done more than anybody else to bring to public attention to the work of real culinary geniuses and artists. His shows go into incredible depth with so many of the most talented cooks from around the world. If you try to paint Fieri as some kind of populist, and Bourdain as some kind of snob, you're an idiot. Bourdain constantly explores food that is a product of abject poverty and celebrates it.

Fieri is a trash culture opportunist, like the guys from Duck Dynasty.

The first time I saw this I laughed for a good 5 minutes. Oh my goodness, on one hand I feel bad for Fieri. It's like he's some pre-approved punching bag for a lot of people. On the other hand he's a really successful guy so none of that really matters to him.

I think that's the problem - if he had the slightest sense of humor about it - all he'd have to do is wink and nod towards his piles of jalapeno-smoked cream cheese dollaz. But he doesn't. He's ONE knowing interview or tweet away from total redemption... but nope.

His actual "insights" into food are crazy bad though - and he's a surprisingly picky eater. So there's only so many times he can reformulate the sentence "You got the crispy crunch of the XXX and the smoky heat from the YYY" before you gag.

I guess the consolation is that Man vs Food dude is apparently a much worse human being, surprisingly.

Worst thing Fieri does tho, in my opinion, is let marketing directors for small restaurant outfits pretend to be a chef while the Mexican dude who's actually making the magic happen, languishes in a corner.

That's Bourdain years ago. Not so much these days. He's just an asshole. I mean, a condescending asshole.

Fieri is what he is. He hosts shows about basic foods and showcases local spots. He doesn't really pretend he's anything more than that. Outside of petty jealousy, I have no idea why Bourdain would even attack him.

Bourdain is an asshole, but he's a genuine asshole. People tend to like and flock to those--see Hunter S. Thompson, who is inspiration for Bourdain incidentally.

Fieri is a nice dude but he's an easy target.

Excpet that's not even true: modern day Anthony Bourdain is a relentless egotist obsessed with his own brand as foul-mouthed rebellious asshole. Whatever he might have been 10 years ago, all he has to say now is the culinary equivalent of the inappropriate shit your drunk uncle who never had any kids would spew at random Thanksgiving dinners.

This is the truth. Fieri may be a nice guy but the guy that sells you life insurance is probably a nice guy too.

But GQ pointed out that "if you close your eyes and listen to Fieri speak," he sounds exactly like the chefs and foodies who love to make fun of him.

“He composts. He hates soda. He doesn’t like hunting,” GQ writes. “Every fifth word out of his mouth is ‘sustainable.’”

So, next time you feel the urge to join Bourdain in making fun of Fieri’s yellow Lamborghini, keep this last gem from GQ in mind:

Ask him about why he started an organic winery, and he’ll launch into a disquisition about how Europeans are so much more enlightened about alcohol consumption. He’ll talk about putting his hands in the soil and making a connection with THE LAND and keeping "lost arts" alive.

.

Where do you notice this? I've read almost all his books and seen everything up until the CNN show, which I have not seen.

Reread Kitchen Confidential. He was never a nice dude. His writing has always been acerbic.

Do you actually watch his show? Because he's nowhere near what you described.

Bourdain is a known dick. Not sure why people are defending him.

The same reason Anthony Bourdain doesn't like him: because he dresses weird and hosts shows aimed at a mostly mainstream audience. It's your job as Edgy Guy to dislike him.

Anthony Bourdain is renowned for being a complete toolbag to pretty much everyone, so the response from Guy is on point. Guy's not a bad guy by any stretch, he is just stuck in the 90s and that works for what he does.

This though...

Anthony Bourdain said:
if Ed Hardy fucked a juggalo.

This is amazing.

It doesn't change the fact he's annoying as fuck.

And if I close my eyes when other celebrity chefs talk, I guarantee not many will make gross smacking sounds with their mouth and grunts while talking about how "money" some shitty diner food is

Glad I'm not too fancy to enjoy some great diner food.

That's just not true. His new CNN show is the best work he's ever done. Watch the Copenhagen episode, it's an incredible examination of a brilliant chef's process. I think that episode alone is better than anything in the much praised (and also quite good) Chef's Table series.

Also, the episode about Iran is just brilliant journalism. I saw things in that episode that I haven't seen in anything else I've seen about Iran. A very thoughtful examination of one of the most interesting and contradictory places on earth.

The guy has done so much to explore food and world cultures, but some people will hate him because he's willing to insult the blatant soulless commercialism and hackery of people like Guy Fieri and Rachael Ray. Bourdain will also admit that he's sold out plenty, but at least he's honest about it.

i actually like watching his show and have nothing against him. i just find the picture i posted funny.

Fieri is also a very narrow, narrow focus on certain food. He just regurgitates the same things over and over. It is fine he is mainstream, but getting shit comes with that.

Glad I'm not too fancy to enjoy some great diner food.

Umm...ok. That really doesn't have much to do with this.

Except publicly tearing down a guy who has nothing to do with you at all based on his personal appearance (e.g. branding) is exactly what that is. The fact that he might produce some vaguely interesting shit from time to time doesn't actually matter, because the actual reason he does that is that its part of his own brand of being a relentless asshole.
So anyone who dislikes Fieri's persona is just trying to be edgy?

Okay.

Except you aren't a famous chef using your position as famous chef to pop off about someone who has nothing to do with you. It's part of Bourdain's brand.

wait people are defending guy fieri as a "nice guy"? lol
isn't it pretty much confirmed the dude is a total creep to women on his show and makes homophobic jokes etc?

I always felt Guy was too easy a target for Bourdain. And although I'm not particularly interested in eating his food, he seems relatively harmless and from what I've heard, a nice guy in real life.
