I see it all the time, people say "no way would I ever do drugs" then get wasted multiple times a week. It just seems so hypocritical. I've known addicts, and I've heard a mother of an addict say something along the lines of "alcoholism isn't as bad" or "alcoholics live longer than drug addicts". It just boggles my mind that people have such a hard time realizing that alcohol is a hard drug. Alcoholics are drug addicts. It isn't cut and dried that illegal drugs are worse either. It depends which dangers you look at. Alcohol for example:
1) has lethal withdrawals, heroin and many others don't.
2) It destroys your organs, again (pure) opiates are relatively safe for the organs.
3) It is just as intoxicating, if not moreso than many illegal drugs.
4) Even if we were to go by addiction rates, alcohol isn't any special. According to our own government, alcohol is at 15%, cocaine (including crack) at 17% and heroin at 23%. In my opinion, illegal drug rates would be inflated, since it takes a special interest in these drugs to try them in a first place. eg. many people who try heroin are already addicted to opiates, giving it a bias, inflated addiction rate.
The point is, if you're going to be slamming drugs because they "ruin lives " and "people who do them are stupid", at least practice what you preach. Or at the very least, get off your high horse.
