Half a year later, the Switch's OS is still woefully incomplete [feature wishlist]

I'm cool with my Switch being a simple gaming console only. Don't need the extra apps I'd never use.

I hate this, because YOUR experience is not going to be worse if all you want your OS to do is start up games, and other people will only BENEFIT from having extra features! So why not be for it, if it will make other peoples experience with the console more enjoyable?

A simple list of all the eshop games with more robust filtering options would be nice.

And honestly, I'd actually use Netflix and Amazon Prime, it would mean I could get rid of my Amazon Fire Tablet during commutes.

Virtual Console was always overpriced, so I'm less hyped for that.

I use my tablet to watch Netflix and Hulu almost every night while I'm cooking or cleaning in the kitchen. It would be so nice if I could just use my Switch instead. One less device to have to mess around with and charge every day.

-I enjoy the lack of music in the OS and eShop
-Having Netflix and other common streaming apps would be a nice addition
-Opening Netflix on the Switch would be so fast thanks to the snappy OS
-Pre-loading digital games needs to be implemented into the OS/eShop

Extra stuff for future updates:
-Messaging between users
-More themes
-More info-rich lock screen, such as friends currently online/games being played
-"Find my Switch" smartphone/web app (location finder through Switch's wi-fi)
-"Find my Switch" app allows remote system lock for theft protection

I'm actually pretty shocked how bare bones it still is. Especially when we're getting closer and closer to the paid online kicking in - right now they've done absolutely nothing to convince anyone to pay for that.

I second everything that OP said. The console is keeping me busy with some amazing games but there is no excuse for the lack of Netflix for example.

A Trophy system is the deciding factor for me. I am waiting for confirmation of the rumours before I buy.

If they announce it tomorrow I will preorder the Mario bundle and get Breath of the Wild.

Saying that these are the only two games I interested on the Switch so I should hold off another year or two so they can build up some decent games.

Are you playing games or achievements? lol

They provide direction for me to try things I would never usually do. If there wasn't a trophy for Crushing in the Uncharted Series I would never even tried.

Nintendo games always seem to fall down my backlog list. If you look at my very bottom of backlog list most are Nintendo games.

I believe it's a hold over from primary school as I always did that little bit more to get the gold star.

I mean, that's completely subjective. To me, VC, Netflix/Hulu/Youtube, web browser, messaging, and a more fleshed out store are very important.
So you want a Smartphone? I would be completely fine without those features (except VC), since my Smartphone can do all of those. Nintendo should focus on features, which are centered about gaming. Log, messaging, voice-chat, themes, new e-shop etc. should be happen first.

I watch Netflix on the PS4 because I can just use the TV remote, no gamepad required. Still I'd love a Switch app for the portability.

I do miss the activity log, all the stats and pretty graphics :( shame really.

Themes are fine but dangerous for the wallet, I can wait. =P

That's it I guess.

Again, I want to point out that Nintendo consoles have had really good Internet browsers - the Wii U browser was the best console browser ever.

Anyway, the Switch has a bloody browser hidden in the OS! Annoying

Yeah the Switch OS has a lot of problems, but the biggest issue is the eShop. They have a perfectly functional one on the Wii U and yet the one on Switch feels like something they threw together in a day for launch and then never bothered to change.

Not sure how many times I gotta tell you guys...

Anyway not saying 3rd party apps and shit aren't ever coming, but it's against what Nintendo pitched the console as to devs and pubs. They wanted to build a machine that was just for games, in order to have less distractions on the device and to sell more software. So far it seems to be working. A bunch of people watching Netflix does not sell games.

I dunno why but when it comes to Nintendo they seem to always take 2 steps forward then 1 step back with hardware and service related stuff.

If it's games they'll knock it out of the park, but the ancillary stuff they fumble their way forward.

I don't know the first thing about marketing and shit, but this sounds weird to me. Can you imagine? "I wanna watch something but this Nintendo Switch has no Netflix so I guess I'll turn it on anyway and I'll buy videogames instead!". Weird?

Like that stupid "starved" argument. Yeah I'll buy anything on the thing because I'm starved lol, we surely don't have enough entertainment in our lifes. Sure thing I was staring at the wall all night before the Nintendo Switch, starved for videogames...

They believe that you already carry at least one device with you at all times that does most of the things people are asking for.

I don't get it. They think that having no Netflix on the Switch will help selling games but they also know I can watch it anytime with all the electronics in the world.

So if I feel like watching Netflix... I just will. How its abscence on the Switch would move software?

Yeah it's a bit barebones. I was hoping that with Splatoon 2 and the online service coming online it would all come. But with that delay, I'm afraid the big update is delayed until whenever that is coming.

It's barebones but I don't want more if it adds any laginess whatsoever. I really like how snappy everything is currently. I can't imagine adding a Virtual Console would change anything, as it's only running when you play a VC game, so that's a no brainer to add.

It's kind of ridiculous how some people are against adding more features. If properly implemented, simplicity and speed can still be maintained as an OS's abilities grow. Why would you not want your $300 machine to do more? Especially when there are still basic features that are missing? The eShop is downright embarrassing for a digital storefront in 2017 and the fact that I'm not able to group up with my friends to play Mario Kart against other people online without going through some matchmaking lottery is horrible. I don't really care about streaming apps at all (and think Nintendo should still market the thing as a game machine first and foremost), but the hardware is capable of 4k streaming, so why not? At least add Twitch seeing as that's gaming related. If you don't want to make use of added features, don't use them, but I personally don't think the OS is complete enough to commend it for anything other than how quick it is, and there is certainly room for improvement.

You pick up your switch and all you can do is play a game, read news about games, or buy games. You decide to play a game. You like the experience of playing the game because Switch is great tech/concept and heaps of fun. You beat the game. You log on to eshop and buy another game. At no point in your experience with Switch are you doing things that don't involve playing games or selling you on more games.

It's not super complicated. And according to a bunch of gaf threads, software sales seem to be the best they've been for Nintendo in ages...

Well people are probably ignoring your argument, it doesn't sound logical to me to credit the success of the system to Nintendo depriving it of features. I get that people wanna avoid the OS getting bloated and Nintendo have an image their wanna push for their console but there's nothing stopping them from pushing the Switch primarily as a gaming console while adding more features to it. It's a weak excuse for a lot of the shortcomings like no folders, weak e-shop navigation.

For Netflix, long story short; if people wanna watch, they'll do it. If it's not on the Switch then that just means that people with a Switch are turning their console off for another service and Nintendo are losing mindshare with that customer. It means that customer might miss an announcement that Stardew Valley or Golf Story is out while they binge watch some show, alternatively if they were to turn on the Switch they might notice there's new releases or news or something on the way to opening whatever Streaming app they want... that won't always happen but at least there's a chance as opposed to not even powering the Switch on.

Because these changes might hurt the platforms OS, making it slower with more built in apps on the OS level.

This is true.

I have a smartphone on me more often than my Switch. In fact I never leave my house without my smartphone, no matter how far I’m traveling.

It has a better and faster browser than any console can hope for. It has better streaming apps than any console can get.

Yes Nintendo knows if people want to use those other apps they have at a minimum one other device that they always carry that they can use. I'm sure Nintendo has tons of data that they used to come to this conclusion. I told gaf 6 months or more before the console was released that 3rd party apps and a browser weren't coming based on knowledge of nintendos pitch to pubs and devs, and no one believed me, and even now people still insist it's barebones on accident.

Very interesting.

The feature I care mostly about to be honest is the sharing of clips. Hilarious sandbox moments in Zelda, salty Mario Kart finishes, great Mario + Rabbids combos. Nintendo really dropped the ball on that one. Social media would've been on fire with those.

I hate this line of reasoning. OF COURSE the extra features ARE going to make the experience worse by the fact that they're simply THERE. And because they are there, resources within the OS are dedicated to keeping it going. Fuck other people who think it needs all the extra bullshit like Netflix and activity logs. That shit clogged up the Wii U and 3DS OS and made those systems fucking worse.

Don't like it? Then take a hike. This 'everything needs to be convergence' bullshit needs to die already.

Also, a nice counterbalance to the people in this thread is this article. https://medium.com/games-ux/thoughts-on-the-nintendo-switch-user-interface-b441129f063d

It's not just how barebones it is. I understand that they can't patch in EVERYTHING at once. It's how Nintendo hasn't released ANYTHING essential in six months. I'd be happy with even just Netflix or an Youtube app or an Internet Browser. Like, one thing to use when I'm not playing games and don't want to switch (pun unintended) devices just to use one of those or want to use them portably but on a slightly bigger screen than a phone's.

I would like a "Social" app that has the friends list as well as an Activity Feed where you can post messages, screenshots, links to news or eshop items to your friends.

But in general, I want them to keep the feature set limited, and instead nail the features that are there. There's lots of things they can do with the Eshop or the News app. But Netflix and whatnot? I'm never going to use that. It's always going to be better on smartphones and tablets anyway.

Lol there is nothing essential about YouTube or Netflix. The only essential thing is to be able to boot up a game.

I see your point. I can say it doesn't work with me: I don't spend more money and/or time on the Switch because it's focused on games. Maybe I'll use my PS4 with a bluray and be like "hey it's been a while since I got a game for this thing" so...

They are totally selling a lot of software, so something is clearly working as intended. xD

Nintendo have said that video capture is coming soon. We already have screenshot capture.

You've ignored that they wanted to watch Netflix. They did not pick up their switch because there is no Netflix. They did not play the game, they did not read the news about games or buy games. It never occurred to them on the way to Netflix to play a game because they didn't turn on a gaming console. They never experienced playing the game on a sweet tech/concept. Never beat the game or logged on to the eshop to buy another.

At no point in their Netflix experience were they exposed to the Switch.

I don't think it's an accident, nor do I think they need it for sales at the moment. But I do think it'd add value to the console without losing much, if anything, for most consumers. Definitely agree it's a strategic move but I don't agree it's the right one. Your thinking definitely seems more in line withe Nintendo's on this one and they're finding a lot of success so I could very well be wrong but the fact they've said they'll bring it at some point makes me wonder at what point they think is the right time.

Yup. Gotta agree with you.

But gosh dang. Gimme more Themes. Lol
