What do you get when you cross a goat and a sheep? One adorable little geep.

A spokeswoman for the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) said the live birth of a geep is a rare occasion, as most die during pregnancy or are stillborn, according to the BBC. The UFU does not know of any others currently in Northern Ireland.

so...basically he has a bunch of farm anamals and doing sexy experiements in crossbreeding produces a half goat-sheep? Lets get some pigs and cows together to create the perfect meat.

It's cute. Never heard the term 'geep' before. How about...Shoat? Sham?
Hybrid nomenclature is whichever is the father species's first syllable followed by the mother species. Or vice versa, I can't remember. Hence tigons and ligers both come from tigers and lions interbreeding.

this is really interesting. I wonder if it is sterile, like a mule.

May be able to back breed with either of its parent species, but not with each other.

then why is it mule/hinny instead of dorse/honkey ?

Honestly, no idea. Maybe because mules were around before we started hybridizing other kinds of animals?

Are you talking about mules? Only females, right? And that is pretty rare.

At least that is my understanding.
No idea about mules. I can't remember if there are hard and fast rules about hybrids or if it's on an individual basis, but I know you can breed a liger and a lion and get a liliger, for instance.

From wiki - Sheep belong to the genus Ovis and have 54 chromosomes, while goats belong to the genus Capra and have 60 chromosomes.

Wowie.

Hmm, that's cool. I have no experience with ligers or other big cats, but I have dealt with mules in my past.
