Half-Life: Alyx Anouncement Trailer

Seeing headcrabs, combine and citadel. Hearing those voices. made me all nostalgic and i realised how much i loved HL2. Damn you valve!

This looks so fucking awesome. I've got an Oculus Rift (sitting in a box somewhere) and a GTX 1080 + i7 6700k system, but I'm thinking I will want to build a whole new PC and maybe even get an Index for this.

As a VR Developer and an owner of the Rift, Vive, and Index I simply cannot wait for a Valve VR game. Having them support the Index like this is awesome for the eco system. While it wont move a huge amount of vives or indexes it will increase the install base of both.

Edit: I'd also like to add that this game will also make our job a lot harder as our game is somewhat similar in style, and we don't have the budget to compete with Valve :p. Still, raising the bar for VR games isn't a bad thing and hopefully us small guys can get some good ideas out of a real AAA experience like this.

What if they enjoy working and innovating with VR more? That's a damn good reason for devs, especially ones that are loaded with cash. They have less reason to be concerned with the install base numbers.

Did you see any great innovation in the trailer?

There is still hope Valve is not derailed like all the other big developers. Although that 1000$ will surely butcher down the potential customer base.

Man I REALLY wish this was also on PSVR. 😰😰

There's probably zero chance they don't port it over eventually. Maybe for PS5.

So, uh, I'm defintely looking at VR headset prices, lmao.

And this is the best part. VR is so awesome, but we have been limited on the really big games made specifically for VR because of the smaller player pool.

The more great VR games we get, the more VR players we will have, and the more great VR games we will get, and so on.

I'm not a Half Life fan, but I'm rooting hard for this game.

Tell me what dekstop games you are physically controlling your arm having to manually move objects with your hand to find something. Not pressign a button, but you are using your mouse to atually control your hand and your fingers.

Yes, it's a VR Half-Life game, unless you think actually manipulating, reloading and aiming to fire your weapons or physically duck behind cover to lean out of is at all similar to point and clicking or thumb twiddling and pressing buttons. And that physical realistic interaction extends beyond guns and to every single thing you may do in such a game. But yes, it's Half-Life so it's still at its heart an FPS, why would anyone expect something else, other types of games will be made with other or new IP, not an FPS IP. If being Half-Life is what makes it uninovative then you're setting expectations a Half-Life game could never beat, lol.

WOW! got my eyes a little wet, I don't even own a VR headset nor think of ever buying one but that was AMAZING, freakin half-life is back, Half-Life 3 seems closer than ever after this.

This is standard for VR games

after seeing boneworks and this i now understand why the future of vr is amazing, In my mind i always saw those shitty static demos where your hand goes through shit. but now i look at normal games thinking god damn these are simple.

"Lololo no one buys VR Headsets, there are no big Games for it fools!"
"Wtf i cant play this AAA VR game, it sucks, worst game ever!!!!"
Some people are never satisfied.....

I thought it would only be a short tech demo where you could play around with the Gravity gun and such, but this seems to be a proper game (as proper as VR games usually goes).

Ya it's the area where we are just not ready for vr. Not many people have the proper space to move freely

I play VR just fine in a space of maximum 1,5m x 1,5m (~4'11 x 4'11) and use the thumbstick on my controller to move around (when it's supported).

I still can't help but wonder why this couldn't be done both ways. Wasn't Resident Evil 7 really well done in VR? Yet that game was also entirely playable without VR. Why can't it be both?

Valve has recently released their own VR headset and wants to sell that to you, of course.

That looks SOOO good. I'm never going to be able to get it because i don't have PCVR, but I LOVE seeing what next-gen VR games look like.

No it's not. Most VR games does not use the kind of physics you saw in that trailer, the closest is comign on december 10th and is called Boneworks.

I know, cause Ive played a ton of VR and the biggest dissapointment with VR games so far is lack of interactivity and physics and this is especially for VR games that has also a dekstop/pancake version.

Look better than an average VR game due to more down-to-earth, toned-down colours and more realistic artstyle, but the saddest part is, the trailer clearly shows that Valve STILL has what it would take to make HL3. With all the power of next-gen console, it just begs to once again push the boundaries and set a new standard of physics, AI, motion/facial animations, and what's not in the video game industry.

Shame im never going to experience this. I love half life but i cant use VR because of a vision problem (eye floaters) that are very problematic when the screens are so close to my eye.

If there's any way to make me want to drop $1500 to upgrade my GPU and grab an Index VR headset... this is it lol

They need to bundle a pre-order as a free bonus when you buy an Index for Black Friday. It would definitely jump start sales.

Yikes, some serious salty troll in this comment. :messenger_smirking:

Nice!
I had a strong feeling their next HL was going to be a VR title. Simply because the hype is so enormous that no "regular" game could have ever lived up. VR, on the other hand, is such a groudbreaking and very new experience that it has a good chance of feeling revolutionary to many players, and truly be remember for as being as legendary as HL1 and 2.

Having said that, I'm curious how many people will get to play it. I unfortunately won't for the lack of highly powerful hardware and/or a VR headset. But I still think they made the right call here. Looks like it has the potential to write history.

I had/have all of those things. One of them is not like the other. VR is amazing.

Lol. I fucking ordered Oculus Rift S after this reveal. I've been on the fence for a loooong time, and if more games like this are coming out, it'll hopefully be worth it.

Resident Evil 7 was one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had and this is dripping with the same goodness. Please come to PlayStation. Pleeeeeeeeeeese.
