Halfway through the year, what's the best game you've played so far?

Mario Kart. Fantastic game and so well polished.

Erm that's it to be honest that is worthy of that tag so far. Will be interesting to see how the fall goes.

Single player - Dark Souls 2 or South Park (PC)
Multiplayer - Garden Warfare (PC), this one could be premature since I've only played 3 hours or so since it unlocked last night but damn is it fun.

It's really hard to choose... I'll go with South Park for now.

Final - South Park

Final Fantasy 14

Second Son as a close second. Pretty disappointing first 6 months. Hope the 2nd half of the year will be better.

Its a tough call between Strider, Infamous and Wolfenstein. I love them all for different reasons.

Strider is so damn polished and feels so damn fluid and ninja to control, even playing for a 10 minute stint. Infamous was much shorter than the two games before, but I still enjoyed swooping around town and causing chaos and watching how it all wrapped up that I played it twice through back-to-back and loved every bit of it. Wolfenstein is the shooter that embarrasses a lot of other shooters with its simple, bloody kinetic gunplay, and surprises by having characters and a world you actually want to get to know.

So yeah, its a tie between those three for me.

Mario Kart 8, easily.

It's been a while since I've played an online game this fun that isn't TF2.

Also it's probably the most beautiful Nintendo game yet.

Mario Kart 8, but as far as 2014 games I've pretty much only played that, DKCTF, and bravely default.

Edit: / thanks for reminding me about strider. That is a great fucking game. MK8 still wins but Strider deserves a mention.

Most of what Nintendo has released thus far has been gold.

Also Another World was re-released on 3DS, that game is really something special.

Final Fantasy 14

Second Son as a close second. Pretty disappointing first 6 months. Hope the 2nd half of the year will be better.

In this example FF14 doesn't count but I'd tally SS instead of discounting the vote. I guess I'll also pick the first eligible game on a list that applies if someone doesn't read the rules

Destiny Alpha, I don't really care if it counts or not, it's by far the best thing I've played all year.

Aside from that, probably a tie between Transistor and Child of Light.

Hmm

Hard to say, but I've greatly enjoyed donkey kong country tf, danganronpa, luftrauser, mk8 and ds II (only ~15 hours in or so in this one)

There's not really much to go off, but I'd echo Wolfenstein. It's not perfect but it's just simple chunky fun.

The Destiny Alpha would also be in there...I think the full game will make quite an impact.

Dark Sould 2 is the only one that's kept me playing for more than 2 hours

Edit: actually that's not true. Infamous Second Son and Mario Kart 8 have also kept me interested for more than 2 hours.

MK8 then South Park.

I'm an hour into Valiant Hearts and I love it. All of the collectibles are 100x more interesting and story-related than in Child of Light. If you're interested in world history get it.

I'm of a mind to make a serious case for Bravely Default, but I am someone who adores the battle mechanics and versatility of job customization enough for them to outweigh the understandable concerns about the controversial late-game pacing.

Other than that, the first game that comes to mind is Hearthstone, which was officially a 2014 release although I have been playing it for nearly a year thanks to the closed beta. And I've barely cracked the surface of Mario Kart, completing all of 150cc but only dabbling in the online play so far, so while I've enjoyed it immensely I don't have a good sense of its longevity just yet. Tropical Freeze sits on deck unopened, so I can't speak for it either.

Does Danganronpa count ? I'm in North America so...

Anyway, even if it does, my vote : Mario Kart 8.

Honourable mentions to Transistor and inFamous and TLoU : Left Behind (DLC probably doesn't count).

Only game I have bought from this year is Xenonauts (backed their kickstarter). Thoroughly enjoying it and wish I could have showered them with more money during the campaign.
